9 JUNE : FOCUS ON CHINA - BUILDING DISCERNMENT ON TRENDS & DRIVERS FOR INNOVATION

Thank you for joining us on the final day of Future Food Asia 2022 where we drew attention on China.

If you missed any of the panels or start-up pitches, they will soon be available for replay on the virtual platform.

THE BIG PICTURE: How is China's agriculture transformation shaping innovation priorities?

We started the day with an important discussion between Steven Zhang (ID Capital) and Dr. Chuanhong Zhang (China Agricultural University) on the agricultural innovations, and policy transformations happening in China. They also discussed the importance of education, particularly for the young, and social implication of technologies in agriculture. Dr. Zhang also shared how China has been involved in providing financial and technical assistance, and forming partnerships with scholars and think tank members internationally.

Truth Unmuted: Investing in agrifoodtech in China, where are the opportunities

Our first Truth Unmuted session of the day was an insightful discussion by Yi Jian (The Good Food Fund), Anning Wei (Shangai Gueva Investment Management) moderated by Walter Ge (Green Leaf Ventures) on investing in agrifoodtech in China. They touched up how US-China relationship is shaping new opportunities across the agrifood value chain. Given the current focus on self sustainability, they highlighted opportunities that are springing up in animal husbandry, farm management, and plant based industries.

Truth Unmuted: Is Alternative Proteins accelerating in China?

Next, we dived deeper into the alternative protein technologies and products in China. The panel had Dr. Yuchu Zhang (Cargill), Jenny Xin Li (Keller and Heckman LLP), Chris Li (Joyvio Capital) and was moderated by Larry Li (China Plant-based Foods Association). The panel unanimously agreed that in the near future alternative proteins will only partially replace animal meat protein. They touched upon critical points on regulations and policies required to accelerate fermentation and clean meat technologies.

Carbon emission reduction: The Journey to Net Zero

This discussion between Jim Thomason (Planet Labs), Dr. Wei Yu (Xiaozao Tech & Lyxia) and Dr. Nanqing Jiang (Green inclusive China) moderated by Isabelle Decitre (ID Capital) was very educational. Jim and Wei Yu covered different technologies impacting carbon mapping, carbon capture and carbon sequestration. They further discussed the requirement of partnerships to achieve the goal of net zero. Dr. Nanqing stressed on the fact that top 1000 companies and governments need to do more towards the commitment to net zero.

Spraying less, spraying better: Opportunities & hurdles, and how innovation can help

In the final discussion, we touched on the issue of excessive usage of agrichemicals that is taking a toll not just on our health and farmers’ wallets, but also on the health of the soil. Dr Nancy Schellhorn (RapidAim) and Justin Gong (XAG), together with Dr Wanyu Zhang (Phagelux Agrihealth Inc.) talked about how innovations, in particular precision agriculture, can reduce the excessive usage of agrichemicals. Dr Nancy and Justin also shared how the partnership between RapidAim and XAG will allow them to detect and better target spray-on pests, further reducing the agrichemicals used in China.

China Startup Curation

In this session, we presented an exclusive curation of three innovative startups selected from a larger pool of applicants. They brought answers to some of the most pressing problems discussed earlier, and perfectly illustrated the vibrant innovation ecosystem in China. The startups were was joined by Isabelle Decitre and Steven Zhang. for a q&a session which covered business models and impact of their technologies.

  • Hangzhou Jimi Biotechnology (China), the youngest transformative cell-cultured meat company founded by serial father-&-son entrepreneurs.

  • Roboworks (China), an AI-enabled agricultural robot company. Its first ‘Pickerbot' harvesting robot offers superior efficiency and better affordability vs competitors.
