8 JUNE : VOICES FROM LEADERS THAT ARE SHAPING OUR FOOD FUTURE

Thank you for joining us on the 2nd day of Future Food Asia 2022. If you missed any of the panels or start-up pitches they will soon be available for replay on the virtual platform.

Innovation Corner

Day 2 of FFA 2022 started with the 2 pitches FFA finalists:

  • Eden Brew (Australia), creates delicious animal-free, precision-fermented dairy the whole world can enjoy.

  • The PlantEat (South Korea), develops plant-based chicken and milk products using a proprietary data- driven plant-based food development system, called P.A.M.S. Our P.A.M.S can find matching ingredients for alternative foods and this in-silico system is 10,000 times more efficient in generating formulations than in-situ.

Truth Unmuted: Is Clean Meat Inevitable?

In our second truth unmuted session we had an electrifying discussion featuring Prof. Paul Wood (Monash University), Sebastien Pascual (Temasek) and Xiangliang Lin (Esco Aster) that was moderated by Sze Tan (CJ CheilJedang). They shared the systemic challenges in terms of the scaling technologies with the right price point, consumer acceptance, and more public and private investments needed to bring cultured meat products to market. Prof. Wood shared the strong need for transformative innovations to avoid this becoming an expensive distraction. Sebastien was optimistic about the private investments flowing into clean meat technologies and regulatory frameworks and approvals.

Why Do We Need a 2nd Generation of Alternative Protein?

Next up, we headed right into the discussion on the need for a second generation of alternative proteins and why. Here, we were joined by Andre Da Costa (DSM), Raffael Osen (A*Star) and Kate Jarvis (ADB) talking about the challenges in the first generation alternative protein products. They touched upon the three key factors of plant based meat products that need to be addressed, namely taste, texture and nutritional value which are not balanced in the current generation products.

Innovation Corner

The final two startups to present were:

  • Eighth Day Foods (Australia), owns a patented, proprietary protein production process that transforms pulses into wholefoods without the need for protein isolation or further processing.

  • ANPOLY (South Korea), transforms biomass waste into high-value and high-quality advanced material, Cellulose Nano Fiber (CNF), which can be used in the food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and packaging industries.

Something’s brewing: Asia is rising to the precision fermentation opportunity

In the afternoon session, we were joined by Dr Kuakoon Piyachomkwan (NSTDA), Dr Sunil Sukumaran (Perfect Day), Dr Yvonne Chow (A*Star), and Dr Ezhil Subbian (String Bio) to tell us about the exciting development in the precision fermentation space and opportunities for startups to scale with more regulatory frameworks being put in place.

EXCLUSIVE: Announcing the Cargill Food for Good Award

The PlantEat Inc. from South Korea was awarded the Cargill Food For Good Award.

Francesca Kleemans, Managing Director of Cargill Cocoa and Chocolate Asia-Pacific explained, “The PlantEat Inc. stood out from among the outstanding pool of entries we received with its innovative data-driven plant-based food development system that is able to formulate alternative foods recipes faster and more accurately.

Understanding the New Innovation Dynamics in the Middle East

For the last panel of the day we welcomed speakers from the Middle East, Zada Haj (DANA Venture Builder), Karim Ghannam (8F Asset Management), and Dr Saeed Alhassan (Khalifa University) to share fresh insights on the new innovation dynamics in the middle east between investors and startups.

EXCLUSIVE: Announcing the Future Food Asia 2022

And we have a winner - the Future Food Asia Award 2022 was awarded to AN POLY from South Korea.
