Subject: What's your #1? How about your 1, 2 & 3?

Hi Friend,

Happy Tuesday to you!

Recently I asked our members during the "shoot the breeze" time in our warm up, what their 1, 2 and 3's were, with the options being feel, look and move. It was a really educational and fun discussion to hear the different responses and different themes between the training times. I'm curious to hear what your #1 is and how you'd prioritize your importance of those options.

What's your #1?

Options: feel, look, move

feel = health (internal, mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, etc...)

look = aesthetics (body composition, mirror muscles, clothes fit, confidence level, ...)

move = performance (function, sports, athleticism, activity, ...)

What's your 1, 2 & 3?

You know your #1, now what order would you put your remaining options in.

There are no wrong answers only right or best answers for you. As a coach, I found it helpful to know what was most important to my clients, so I can best choose my words when "coaching them up".

Story.

When I was playing baseball, I used to wear my socks high, which meant I had to put my pants on inside out. I'd slide the legs up to my knees, fold my socks over the pant cuffs, and then pull my pants up outside out. My dad would watch me do this meticulously and make sure I got rid of every wrinkle and that each pant leg was the same length, as I checked in front of the mirror. He said, "if you look good, you feel good and if you feel good, you play good.". There's some truth to that, and it was catchy and I bought into it. If I looked good in my uniform, then I felt good and if I felt good, I had a better chance to play good.

The irony is that if we won a game, I and some other teammates, wouldn't wash our uniforms. We were really good, so for most of 8th grade, we didn't wash our uniforms for the latter half of the season and all through the playoffs and championship game. I guess it worked as we won the Union News Sandlot Tournament. :-) I guess it also means that either how you look is arbitrary (clean uniform pride vs. dirty uniform pride) or if you feel good because you're winning, you play good because you've been winning and if you play good, you don't care how you look, or maybe you can get even more dirt, grass and sweat stains to make your uniform look (and smell) even cooler (wink)!

What's my #1? What's my 1, 2, 3?

I think my #1, 2 and 3, vary on the day and situation like a client Lucy says. #1 is probably feel for me, but #2 and 3 depend on the situation. The more physically active I am in recreation, the more #2 is move. The more I'm having to dress up and be social, the more #2 is look. Thankfully move addresses look, but look, doesn't necessarily address move. Move and look both address feel. Feel doesn't necessarily address look and move.

Thank you for entertaining this thought exercise. I'd love to hear your #1 and your 1, 2, 3. Feel free to reply and share and if you want to add context for the fun of it, have at it. :-)
