Subject: The real reason you can't come up with new ideas

And what you can do about it...

This week's email is a little different from my usual.

It's more of a rant with actionable tips for you.

One of the biggest problems I'm seeing amongst writers is their lack of ability to come up with angles/ ideas.

And while AI is making this worse, there's an underlying problem that's much more sinister...

Overstimulation.

Instead of giving your brain time to think, you pick up your phone and mindlessly scroll through social media.

How do I know?

Because I used to do it too.

Whenever I had a break I'd reach for my phone and scroll, consuming rubbish that has never benefited my life.

I'd then return to my laptop with brain fog.

This has become an epidemic in the modern world.

Most people never give themselves time to be "bored".

Instead, we're always consuming.

Social media. Training. Working. TV. Video games. Podcasts. House chores.

When was the last time you actually sat down for 10 minutes and just did nothing?

I bet you can't remember.

This overstimulation is not only keeping you in a constant state of stress, but it also kills creativity.

You see, when you're in a state of boredom your brain starts processing thoughts.

This is often why you'll have great ideas when you're doing a task like washing up or taking a shower.

However, instead of having these moments you fill your time with mindless consumption.

If you want to have better ideas, it all starts with cutting this out.

You need to allocate time each day to idea generation.

To do this I:

  • Meditate

  • Sit in the sauna

  • Go for walks (without my phone)

  • Sit in a room playing music with no lyrics (LoFi/ classical)

Often my brain is racing for the first 5-10 minutes.

But after 10 minutes the magic begins.

I start to generate ideas.

I note these down and check if they're good at a later time.

Sometimes they're great.

Other times they're terrible.

But what matters is the creative process.

It's what allows me to differentiate myself from other copywriters.

When a client works with me, they're getting original ideas, not something created by ChatGPT.

And this is your superpower too.

When you create new ideas and angles no other copywriter can replace you.

But when you rely on AI you turn yourself into a replaceable asset.

So the choice is yours.

Will you continue to mindlessly consume and rely on AI?

Or are you going to turn yourself into an irreplaceable asset?

Have a great week,
