Subject: If you've got issues with balance...read this...
Poor balance is one of THE biggest problems you'll potentially run into as you get older.Nobody wants to fall and get injured...yet it happens all the time due to poor balance. Now, balance has a strong strength component...if you don't have the specific strength to correct yourself when you start to lose your balance, you'll be more likely to fall. So I've come up with some simple balance-targeted strength exercises that can really help.
1. Standing on foot while holding weight.Yep, that's literally all it is. Hold either a pair of dumbbells or kettlebells... really anything, even just holding a barbell in front of you like a tightrope walker... then just stand on one foot for 30 seconds to a minute (then repeat on the other foot). It'll be easy at first, then you'll start to feel all the little stabilizer muscles in your legs and hips firing. This is where you really start to build strength for balance. And the beauty of it is, if you start to lose your balance, just set your other foot down. Now, holding a PAIR of weights will keep you more balanced....then you can progress to...
2. Holding ONE weight while standing on one foot.Yep, just that simple again. But holding the weight in just one hand will give you offset loading, which is more challenging. Then the fun begins...
3. Pass that weight from hand to hand while standing on one foot. This shift in loading will really challenge your stabilizer muscles and force you to make bigger adjustments on the fly.
4. Stand on a folded up towel other uneven surface. This is the most advanced variation and will really add some challenge to the exercise. You can do any of the variations above with this, too.
These simple exercises are great for tacking on to the end of a workout, or just doing at home if you've got some weights you can use at home (even holding a grocery bag with a few items in it will work...doesn't matter what the resistance is).
Poor balance can't always be fully corrected with strength exercises, though.Balance problems often start in your brain... and just doing exercises can't always solve these types of problems. That being said, there are things you can do to very easily and effectively support your balance through your brain, including brain-support supplements like this... This formulation was created by my friend and colleague (and top physical therapist), Rick Kaselj. His work in rehab is downright incredible... I've talked about his programs for years. They're extremely effective and very easy to use. This formula is even better...because it literally supports your brain and balance just by taking a pill. Sounds crazy, but the research he's done on the ingredients backs it up. You can learn more about his Balance formula here.
