 The Work

"It may be that when we no longer know what to do
we have come to our real work."
--Wendell Berry

I love these words. When I don't know things, it means my work is preparing to unfold in new dimensions.

Teaching with Jenna Abernathy is one of these new dimensions.  In our workshop, Stories in the Body, I am encouraged to let go of the realm of thinking, where I as a writer feel so at home. I'm nudged deeper, to experience the movements and sensations of my physical form.

Lately I'm letting go more deeply, of who I think I should be as a coach, writer and artist. This is one of the best gifts of the creative journey.

This journey feels very real to me right now, as I've experienced it in a literal sense on my recent pilgrimage to Santiago, Spain. You can read some of my lessons on A Fire by Night. Heartfelt thanks to Wildfire Writers Patty Crandell and Edee Lemonier for nurturing community while I was gone.

If you're feeling stuck in any way, perhaps it's time to let go of what you think you know and how you think the journey should unfold.

I encourage you to move with Jenna and me in Stories in the Body, or to sit in Wildfire Writing class and freewrite a phrase you never dreamed would enter your head. Or to stand at a microphone and read your own work in front of a room full of people on October 29 for Wildfire Wednesday.

What is your way? What is your work?

If, like me, you're still finding out, let's make some discoveries together.

_____

Stories in the Body is my writing/movement collaboration with Journey Dance Apprentice and yoga instructor, Jenna Abernathy. Our theme this month is "Dance!" - especially for those who have never connected to their inner dancer.  Sunday, October 5, at 9:30 a.m. at 55 Farragut St. #4, Portland, 97211. We'd love to see you.
