Reopening Face-to-Face Meetings
Approximately 20 meetings which had been on hiatus or meeting online have resumed face-to-face status. As you consider whether to resume face-to-face meetings, please read SMART Recovery’s Steps to Reopening a Face-to-Face Meeting.

We welcome your re-opening experiences and comments at importantnews@smartrecovery.org. SMART may then share these on the resource page.
Curt Kelly, a facilitator in Wisconsin, has shared his experience with reopening:

"I heard in my Zoom meetings that although [online meetings] filled a need, nothing is as good as a face-to-face meeting. I facilitate two weekly meetings, about twenty miles apart. I polled the attendees, and overwhelmingly they wanted to return to face-to-face meetings. I kept one meeting online and went back-to-face to face for the other.

We could not use the hospital venue where we usually meet, so I decided to hold the meeting at a park directly behind the hospital. The participants were familiar with the park because that is where we have our annual SMART picnic. It has a shelter so we can meet rain or shine and there are picnic tables we can use. If they want to control their social distancing, they bring their own chair and place it where they are comfortable.

We averaged 12-15 people for the Zoom meeting and have had 12 people come to the face-to- face meeting. Before the shutdown, this meeting averaged 24 participants.

I am looking for a venue so my other meeting can return to face-to-face but have not been able to find a permanent location yet. We will probably end up in a park too."
Pass-the-Hat Donations
Did you now there are four ways to collect donations? One of the most convenient is to copy and paste the following link into your Zoom meeting chat box:

Learn more by visiting the continue the pass-the-hat tradition section of the resource page. While you’re there, check out the PayPal template and information to create a customized pass-the-hat slide for your meeting.

SMART appreciates your continuing the pass-the-hat tradition in your meetings.
Zoom Version Updates
As of May 30, all Zoom users must be running program version 5.0, at minimum, to sign into a meeting. If you receive a “I cannot join the meeting” complaint from a participant, instruct them to upgrade or download the current Zoom software from Zoom.us/download.

To do this:

1.  Sign into your Zoom account (desktop client)
2.  Click your profile picture (upper right corner)
3.  Click Check for Updates

If there is a new version, Zoom will download and install.  Everyone should check for updates regularly.
