Subject: VolunteerCONNECTION - July 2025

Dear Volunteers,

This month, I’ve been reflecting on the Japanese art of kintsugi—the practice of repairing broken pottery with gold, making the mended piece more beautiful than the original. At SMART, we witness this spirit every day. Whether we’re navigating setbacks, rebuilding relationships, or learning to see ourselves with compassion, our journeys are filled with golden seams.

July has been a reminder that healing isn’t about perfection—it’s about resilience. Thank you for the part you play in making SMART Recovery a space where everyone is invited to grow stronger through challenge.

With gratitude,

Senior Director of Program Delivery

📈 Scaling SMART: A New Approach to Hosting Online SMART Meetings

We’ve officially launched a new pilot program to test Pathminder-hosted Zoom accounts—and we’re off to a strong start! Fifteen meetings are already participating, and we’ll be expanding the pilot by adding 35 more meetings by August 8.

💡 Why this matters:

SMART currently provides and maintains more than 425 Zoom accounts to support online meetings. While this ensures facilitators have the tools they need, it’s a significant ongoing expense—and one that limits our ability to scale. This pilot with Pathminder offers a potential solution by allowing us to host meetings without requiring individual Zoom accounts, while keeping the experience seamless for you and your participants.

💻 What’s different (and what’s not):

  • You’ll still run your meeting in Zoom—no new platform to learn.

  • You’ll start your meeting from your SMARTfinder listing, instead of launching directly from Zoom.

  • Participants join just like they always have, using the Join Now button on SMARTfinder.

  • Meetings must start/end within a 15-minute grace window.

  • Verifications are enabled by default (except for F&F meetings).

✨ We selected our initial beta group based on factors like meeting attendance, timing, facilitator experience, and overlap with other meetings—to help us test system capacity and support.

Now we’re ready to welcome more volunteers!

If you host a meeting using a SMART-provided Zoom account and would like to be considered for the beta, please email Melina directly at mgilbert@smartrecovery.org.

Your feedback will play a vital role in shaping the future of SMART’s online meeting program—and we’d love to have you on board.

Help Keep Our Meeting List Up to Date

Keeping SMART Recovery’s meeting list accurate is essential to helping participants find the support they need — and we need your help!

We regularly review all meetings and reach out when no updates have been made in the past 12 months. If you facilitate a SMART Recovery meeting, please take a moment to confirm your meeting details:

✅ Why It Matters:

  • Participants can find support more easily — without frustration

  • Our directory reflects only active, available meetings

  • We can remove or update listings as needed to keep everything current
