We Are So Grateful! |
| | | | | We have overcome a major hurdle that was keeping us from hiring a local architect and engineer. We are now in discussion with a firm in hopes that they can be our new architect/engineer of record. Once hired by UCC, they will be able to verify specs that the steel supplier is requiring and we'll be able to get the steel (which was ordered a few months ago for the new building's footings) into production.
We remain very grateful for the steadfast faith of all those whose gifts of
love and substance sustain our Church during this time of transition.
We are very glad to welcome old friends and new friends on Sundays on our
home campus. Watch this space as we give thanks together that God is clearing the way for us to go forward.
Our
beautiful new Church Home is being built for us in wisdom, love, and
divine timing and we are ready to receive it!

This Sunday: Rev Cynthia Mackey, Minister of Education Aspects of God |
|
Highlights:
Lyrics from “God, You Are” by Daniel Nahmod:
God, You are every mountain. God, You are every ocean. God, You are every canyon, every inch of earth and sky. God, You are every morning. God, You are every midnight. God, You are every moment every second of my life. God, You are every sunrise, God You Are every moonglow.
God, You are every starshine, every inch of earth and sky. God, You are every springtime, God, You are every snowfall. God, You are every season, every second of my life.
Everything I see, everything I do, everything I am is You. Everything above, everything below, everything I know is You. ‘Cause You are the very breath I breathe, and Your perfect Love created me. |

Last Sunday's Shining Words:
“The place where you stand is holy ground” (Exodus 3:2-5).
I’m in the right place at the right time. I am just where I’m supposed to be. I am getting the message loud and clear. My soul is welcome here! |

Heart of the House - Dr Jo (Part II) |
| | In the fall of ’76, Dr. Jo Rowe was Assistant Professor at North Carolina Central University, a historically black institution. She taught Adapted PE, Kinesiology, Motor Skills, Tennis and Golf. She also helped design their new PE complex, served on the Faculty Senate and coached a city women’s softball team.
Then, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, she was promoted to Associate Professor, developed procedures for doctoral student exit exams in Health Ed and PE. She met and became friends with one of the greatest head football coaches, Paul “Bear” Bryant. In 1983, she went to Youngstown State University, Ohio, for research and taught Health Ed and Bowling while doing research on base-running procedures for softball, which most teams still teach today. Then, Jo was hired as a volleyball coach and Associate Professor; she had input into the design of the new Phys Ed Complex.
Next came the University at Louisville, Ky, where she taught and also traveled back and forth to Augusta every other week to assist her parents. Dr. Jo served as Professor and Assistant Dean of the Graduate School and taught Kinesiology and Adapted PE to undergrad and grad students in Phys Ed, Phys Therapy, Sport Medicine, and Sport Injuries fields. She taught in the Dept of Exceptional and Remedial Education, providing training for teachers in Special Ed. Two racquetball courts were turned into lab areas for her program. She advocated for a much-desired elevator to the 2nd level and helped to design the first wheelchair accessible playground. Dr. Jo continued research and teaching at the US College in Athens, Greece, where her sweet partner, Mary Smith, was able to go with her and they had a wonderful time. While serving on many important committees, Dr. Jo was selected as “faculty rep” at football games 6 or 7 times. She was there on the sideline with Johnny Unitas on one side of the field and Bart Starr on the other. Once she was seated next to “The Greatest” Mohammed Ali at a sports banquet. She cut his meat for him and wiped food from his tie, and met with the champ on several other occasions. On the oversite committee, she traveled to various conferences and NCAA tournaments for football and men’s and women’s basketball. She accompanied the volleyball team to Hawaii twice, once as NCAA rep and once as a faculty rep. She made friends with the men’s basketball coach, Denny Crum, and they ate ice cream together at one of the tournaments. During those years, the PGA came to Louisville twice and Dr. Jo volunteered to work at the PGA on the Security Team. She was also a Marshall at the Fuzzy Zoellor Wolf Challenge Golf Tournament in Jeffersonville, IN.
Dr. Jo Rowe was active in various professional organizations at the state and national levels throughout her career and received numerous awards. Here is a sampling: Who’s Who in American Women, Who’s Who in the South and Southeast, 2000 Notable Women, AAHPERD Research Award Southern Academy for Women in Physical Activity, Sort, and health research Sward, SDAAHPERD Professional service Award KAHPERD Merit Award, U of Louisiana Provost Advising Award, Community Service Award, Disability Awareness Award for Service, Bill Cox’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Service to Disabled Persons, Presidential Career Service Award, and U of L Trustees Award in 2001 (highest award given to faculty), upon which was printed the following description: “Joanne Rowe, Professor of health Promotion, Physical and Sports studies in the college of Education and Human Development and Assistant Dean of the Graduate School, has made significant contributions to the disabled population throughout Jefferson County, wither volunteer programs. She designed the Motor Skill and Motor Leaning Lab areas in Crawford Gym and actively pursued other structural changes to ensure accessibility for all individuals. Dr. Rowe is devoted to working with students with disabilities and excels in this area. She developed and teaches a class specifically targeted for students with disabilities. Dr. Rowe contributed to nontraditional students when she designed and began teaching Physical Activity for the Older Adult. Nominations referred to Joanne as “going out of her way to advise and teach nontraditional students who are having difficulties adjusting to either starting or returning to college and constantly advocates and supports their cause.” She has been described as a demanding yet caring, disciplined, yet soft, shrewd yet unaffected one-on-one mentor and friend to our students, one who takes a personal interest in them by checking their progress on a regular basis. One nominator said, Jo is a champion of the underserved. She willingly steps forward to make life a little easier for those around her …. She is one of those who makes a difference.”
Her vitae is easily seventeen pages long, filled with documentation of her wealth of educational and service experiences. Some years ago, her High School, Academy of Richmond County, established a “Hall of Fame.” Every year, outstanding graduates are nominated to be inducted. Early this year, Dr. Jo received a call from the Committee Chair, announcing that Dr. Jo had been selected for 2025, to be honored along with eight other individuals at the awards banquet.
For many years, Dr. Jo served as Director of Maintenance on the 46 condo units of her community in Largo until 2020 and was President of the Association from 2008-2019. Here at Unity Church of Clearwater, the congregation all loves seeing Mary Smith and Dr. Jo Rowe in attendance on Sundays. They love the music and all their wonderful friends, including The Rev. Dr. Leddy and Russ Hammock. Dr, Jo and Mary stay very positive and quite active, attending plays, concerts, casinos on occasion, and taking cruises. As the saying goes, “When one door closes, another opens. All you have to do is step through.” In Dr. Jo’s words, “I ask, ‘God, what is next?’ and new doors keep opening!” |

Wednesday Evening Spiritual Treatment |
|
Wednesdays
7:00-7:30 PM
Teach Us to Pray was written by Charles Fillmore (Cofounder of the Unity Movement) and his second wife, Cora (a leader in Silent Unity and in Unity's Correspondence School and a beloved teacher of prayer). Cora Fillmore contributed a large number of the affirmations, lesson plans, and instructional chapters in this volume. As we follow the lessons together, we see that prayer is not begging, but aligning our thoughts with God's ideas. Leddy has compiled a unique series of twelve prayer services, embodying the essence of each of the twelve chapters of this fascinating study.
Join Leddy and experience the deep thoughts of Charles and Cora Fillmore every Wednesday evening through October.
Come, let us pray together! |

Upcoming Interfaith Gathering All Are Welcome & Encouraged to Attend |
| On October 23rd, the Jewish Federation of Florida's Gulf Coast will be showing the movie “Tragic Awakening” at Temple Ahavat Shalom in Palm Harbor.
The movie is a new look at the oldest hatred, a, post-October 7th film rethinking antisemitism’s roots, turning hatred into strength for Jewish identity and Western values.
The JFFGC is trying to get as many folks – Jewish or not – to see this important movie, so they are not charging anything to attend.

"God is not a being or person having life, intelligence, love, power. God is that invisible, intangible, but very real, something we call life. God is perfect love and infinite power. God is the total of these, the total of all good, whether manifested or unexpressed.... "We all have direct access through the Father in us--the central 'I' of our being--to the great whole of life, love, wisdom, power, which is God. What we now want to know is how to receive more from the fountainhead and to make more and more of God (which is but another name for All-Good) manifest in our daily life"-- H. Emilie Cady, "Statement of Being" in Lessons in Truth, 1894-5. |

OUR WEEKLY AFFIRMATION:
