Subject: Throwback Thursday – Are you Resilient and Flexible?

Hi Friend,

15 years ago, I started working on a podcast called Passion Quest. Our goal was to interview people who have chosen to pursue their passions in life, sometimes in the face of physical, financial, or other obstacles. More importantly our goal was to discuss how they managed to live with purpose and passion, while discovering their strategies to overcome adversity. Today we would call that resiliency and flexibility.

My partners and I only made a couple of episodes of Passion Quest, but we did learn a few things during that time. Resiliency and flexibility are important to success, and learning some key strategies to be resilient and flexible can strengthen your ability to prepare for times of change.

Why is it important?

When resilient and flexible people are confronted with ambiguity, anxiety, and a loss of control that accompanies change, they tend to grow stronger from the experiences, rather than allowing themselves to be depleted. Resilient and flexible people are more likely to make a quicker and more effective adaptation to change. They are winners, rather than losers, critically important in organizations. Resilient people are necessary to foster success during a change.

When we are no longer able to change a situation,
we are challenged to change ourselves.
- Victor Frankel

Resilience is the ability to bounce back or keep going in times of stress or difficulty. Some people are more naturally resilient than others. Stress can take its toll on the physical and mental health of individuals and can impede work performance. Greater resiliency will keep your productivity from decreasing in times of stress. Being flexible means not resisting inevitable changes. Flexibility is not passivity. It is being open to change in order to improve life and reduce stress.

Change Your Mindset

There are five steps that anyone can take to improve resiliency.

Five Steps:
  • Acceptance: Accept that change and failure is inevitable and not lasting.
  • Be self-aware: Pay attention to strengths and weaknesses and focus on strengths.
  • Embrace adversity: Realize that adversity may benefit you.
  • Relationships: Create a strong social network and actively listen to those around you.
  • Set goals: Make personal goals and work towards them.

And another five steps you can take to become more flexible.

Five Steps:
  • Let go: Release any attachment that is making you inflexible.
  • Relax: Practice work and life balance and stop taking life too seriously.
  • Do not focus on being right: Be willing to admit when you make mistakes.
  • Pick battles: Stop fighting every change and go with the flow.
  • Support: Gather feedback and support from friends to find out when you are not being flexible.
Remember, your goal is progress, not perfection.

In the meantime, please let me know if I can be of any assistance going forward and check out our upcoming events below.

Have a great week!
