| Then and Now...Meaningful Monitoring of Diabetes |
|
Today, almost 10 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data stating that more than 100 million U.S. adults are living with either diabetes or prediabetes. We know that if prediabetes is not treated, it typically will lead to type 2 diabetes within five years. Locally, the statistics are similar. The latest CDC statistics show 9.6% of adults living in Clay County with diagnosed diabetes.
Spencer Hospital has two Certified Diabetes Educators to help navigate diabetes and to assist you in gaining skills to help you keep your diabetes under control.

| Spencer Hospital - Breast Imaging Center of Excellence |
|
Spencer Hospital has been designated a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the only hospital in a 90-mile radius to have earned that distinction.
By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound, including ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Spencer Hospital also has certified breast health navigators to provide education and support to women with breast health concerns and aid them in connecting with resources.
In addition to being named a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, Spencer Hospital’s diagnostic imaging services has obtained and maintained ACR accreditation in numerous modalities, including: Computerized Tomography – CT, CT Lung screening, Mammography/3D Mammography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging – MRI, Nuclear Medicine, Positron Emission, Tomography - PET CT, and Ultrasound.

Two local healthcare clinics have been named 2019 Guardian of Excellence Award® winners by Press Ganey, a national company which monitors patient satisfaction.
Together, Milford Family Care and Sioux Rapids Family Care, both operated by Spencer Hospital in collaboration with Avera Medical Group Spencer, have been bestowed this special award which recognizes top-performing health care organizations that have consistently achieved the 95th percentile or above of performance in the patient experience.

| Annual Candlelight Memorial Service Honors Loved Ones |
|
The holidays can be a difficult time for those who have experienced the loss of a loved one; yet it’s also an important time to remember those we’ve lost. The annual Service of Remembrance, sponsored by Hospice of Spencer Hospital, Abben Cancer Center, Warner Funeral Home, and area clergy, is a special time to remember those loved ones.
The Candlelight Service of Remembrance will be Thursday, December 5th at 6:30 PM at First Christian Church located at 701 E 18th Street in Spencer.

Get the Skinny on Body-weight Training

Body-weight training is one of many components necessary for a successful strength and conditioning program that when properly manipulated can produce favorable results in both physical strength and stamina in many populations.
However, externally loaded movements (machines, barbells, dumbbells, etc.) are needed to create a stimulus for maximized strength development and muscle and bone growth beyond just training with body-weight.
In the end, both body-weight training and weight training are beneficial. Using both training methods in a properly designed program will yield optimal results and a stronger more resilient you.
