COVID-19 Vaccination Information
Last Updated Jan. 21, 2021

Currently, in accordance with a vaccination shortage directive from the State of Iowa, Clay County Public Health and Spencer Hospital are vaccinating healthcare personnel while local pharmacy partners are immunizing long-term care residents. This is referred to as priority group 1A. The state has announced plans to expand eligibility to people who meet 1B criteria by February 1st. On Jan. 21, the state announced plans to expand those in 1B priority group to persons age 65 and older (previously was age 75 and older). Also, the state established tiers within the 1B priority population, providing guidance for local departments of health.

Vaccination clinics are being planned, yet dates and times will not be finalized until Clay County Public Health officials are notified of when vaccine for the 1B population will be received and how much vaccine will be allocated. The number of people who can be scheduled will depend on how much vaccine is received. Appointments will be scheduled to avoid lines and maintain social distancing.

As the vaccine becomes available to more people, information will be shared broadly through this website, Spencer Hospital's Facebook account, and local media partners.

The First Baby of 2021 (Finally) Arrives!
The first baby of 2021 has finally arrived! After a busy December in Spencer Hospital’s Birth Center, January started very quietly – so quiet that the first baby of the New Year didn’t arrive until January 6th. As long as the wait seemed for the birth center staff, it really felt long for new mom Patty Schulz and her husband Dave. Patty’s labor started Tuesday morning yet baby Reba Jayne didn’t make her appearance until early Wednesday evening, after 36 long hours of labor for her mom.

Reba Jayne weighed 7 pounds, 1 ounce and measured 19.25 inches long. Patty and Dave said they chose the name “Reba” because they liked that it’s a familiar, yet not a common name. After researching it in a baby names book, they learned it also means “fourth born” and Reba is Patty’s fourth baby.

Congrats to our amazing coworker Patty Schulz, Director of Nutrition, Valet, and Environmental Services, and her husband Dave who have welcomed little Reba Jayne to their family, the first baby of the new year at Spencer Hospital!

Spencer Welcomes Over 200 Babies in the Year of the Pandemic
Despite 2020 being one of the most unusual years to date, one thing remains certain, new life and new beginnings continue to provide hope for the future. In 2020, 229 babies were born at Spencer Hospital, with 118 of those girls and 111 boys.

"This has been quite a unique year in our birth center trying to navigate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic, yet our team continues to enjoy the opportunity to help families welcome little ones into the world as well as educating and pampering new moms," commented Jeannette Hasley, Spencer Hospital Birth Center Director.

Kombucha: Health or Hype?
You may have seen this trendy drink gaining popularity recently, but this fermented tea has been around for centuries. With its claimed beneficial probiotics, antioxidants, and ability to help reduce stomach issues while boosting our immune system, it is no wonder this beverage has earned recognition.

An estimated one-fourth of consumers are including more functional foods and beverages in their diets this year since the pandemic started. The pandemic has also increased society’s concerns about health and wellness, as well as increasing ways to support their immune system. So how does Kombucha help our bodies?
