Hi everyone,
If you missed the January 2026 LRI Client Update, here’s the streamlined takeaways from the deck.
🔹 Petitions and Elections
Petition and election activity remains below 2022–2023 levels.
A brief post-shutdown spike faded quickly, returning to lower baseline volumes.
🔹 Starbucks Update
Strike activity expanded to 200+ locations and multiple distribution centers.
Starbucks reports no material business impact, with 99% of stores open and record Red Cup Day sales.
December saw one of the highest single-day petition totals on record.
No Starbucks RC or RM petitions were filed in January 2026.
🔹 Healthcare: New York Nursing Strike
Roughly 15,000 NYSNA nurses struck three major hospital systems on January 12.
Hospitals reportedly spending $100 million on replacements to keep operations running.
Prior NY nursing strikes suggest shorter-duration outcomes despite aggressive demands, althoughboth sides of the strike expect it to last for weeks.
🔹 NLRB Status
The Board currently has a quorum but faces another potential loss in August 2026.
Expect routine decisions first; major policy shifts remain unlikely in the near term.
🔹 General Counsel and Courts
Prior GC guidance has largely been withdrawn.
Courts continue to scrutinize expanded remedies and bargaining orders, including the Fifth Circuit SpaceX injunction.
🔹 State and Federal Developments
Captive-audience laws remain fragmented across states.
New York and California mini-NLRA laws remain blocked.
The Department of Labor faces an active investigation while preparing a broad deregulatory agenda.
