Hi Friend,
I come from a background of slinging iron as a way of improving strength and performance. If something works, then that's all that really matters.
During the course of my own 20+ years in-the-trenches experience, I have discovered certain protocols work better than others. I have also found there is significant overlap between many methodologies, and that the most effective workout for you today will soon become old and require changing.
Like Coach Dan John famously quipped, "Everything works… for about two weeks!"
Dan is right. Things do need changing. But you don't have to go crazy and throw the baby out with the bathwater. Even the smallest changes can often mean the difference between stagnating or gaining.
Be subtle. Don't use a sledgehammer to crack a proverbial nut when a simple variation will do the job just as effectively.
For example, try changing your grip. Alter the angle of your bench press. Swap your barbell for dumbbells. Switch the order of your exercises.
The secret? When your training starts to get old, mix it up, a little.
The basics of getting big and strong will always remain. So long as you are doing the right things in your training, then it's unlikely you will ever need to change your program beyond some simple, small changes.Like Arnold says in the movie Terminator Genisys, "Old but not obsolete." And that's what you have to remember, here. A little change is good, but brief and basic lifting lasts for ever.
Until next time,
Squat for Glory!
