Mourning the summer

Last week I returned to work from my summer vacation.  It really felt like summer was over and there was a part of me that was sad about it.  This is a feeling I get every year.  

For some of you it’s time to go back to school yourself or for your kids, others it’s taking on virtual school or new projects.  In general, it’s a time of more stress and less rest, as it is a start and reboot time of year.  This fall for many is causing even more stress and anxiety than usual. We don’t know how things will go.

I often feel like refusing to accept the reality and try to think that summer is just going to come back.  What I need to do though is accept that times are changing and to embrace this new season! Suddenly the anxiety diminishes and my mood returns and I actually start enjoying these differences from a positive perspective! Your optimism or pessimism will make a difference - remember:  your mind talks to your body! 

September is also a time of change in temperature.  It’s getting colder and wetter again.  Our bodies are more susceptible to stress and illness during periods of change.

With this in mind, changes should happen in sleep and nutrition.  You should consider more sleep, even if it’s just going to bed 15 minutes earlier.  You should also consider eating less raw foods and start looking into stews and more warming foods - this will help your body stay stronger and have a better digestion.  The more you embrace these changes the smoother things will go.  

If you’ve never tried acupuncture (or stepped away from it for a while), you should also consider getting acupuncture to help you adapt to the additional stress (whether it’s working more or back to school!).  Acupuncture is very good at adjusting your nervous system and balancing hormones during stressful times.  While many people seek acupuncture care for specific conditions, there are also many who enjoy the benefits from a wellness perspective to help their body stay healthy and keep the stress response down. I’m sure you’ll all agree that a body that is less stressed can handle more and be healthier :)

 BACK PACK SAFETY

It's nearly back-to-school time, and while distance learning may be more prevalent, from kindergarten to college, there will be some weekly commutes to see friends, to the library, for coffee or play dates! 

As a chiropractor, here are my top tips to minimize the negative effects of back pack wearing on your posture! 

Choose a backpack with wide, cushioned straps, and use both whenever possible. Those one sided laptop bags, or stylish packs with spaghetti straps are not great for your shoulders or neck.

Grab a pack with many compartments! Try to place the heaviest items or furry friends near your torso  and distribute lighter items toward the outside . If your lunch is taking up majority of the pack, consider carrying a separate lunch bag.

Use accessory straps if they are provided. Once again, this practice will distribute the weight toward your midback and off your upper shoulders. Make sure it's adjusted accordingly.

Aim to have the backpack carrying no more than 10-15% of your bodyweight If your child weighs 50lbs, they should should not be carrying 20lbs!  A jacket or lunch can be carried or worn.

Lastly, look for a pack with proper ventilation. Our summers and even falls can be hot and while commuting, if the pack gets uncomfortable, it may encourage one sided or improper use!

During these past few months so many things have changed in this world. In the beginning I think most of us had the expectation that this was temporary and it was just a matter of time before things went back to normal. But unfortunately the reality is that we need to start adapting to the “current normal”. Wearing a mask indoors, scheduling and booking workouts ahead of time, not being able to hug whomever you want or greet someone with a handshake.

This is our "current normal" and I personally have been working so hard to wrap my head around that. I wanted to share with you some tips that have been helping me adapt: 
  • 1) Stop trying to fit old habits and routines into your life. Family schedules are different and many of us are still working from home with kids so don't get frustrated when your old routine isn't working anymore.
  • 2) Not thinking or worrying about what the future is going to look like and live in the present. Live each day as is and focus on overcoming the daily obstacles instead of the ones that haven't even happened yet.
  • 3)This new change is out of our control. Stressing about it or being upset will do no good. Find things such as journaling, meditation, yoga or a long walk to decrease the stress you may be feeling
  • 4) Creating NEW opportunities instead of holding onto the old. Be creative and find new and exciting activities!
