October: Sleep and Halloween!

By Dr. Veronica, Orleans Chiropractor

Hi everyone! This month we will be talking about sleep!

How can chiropractic care help with sleep?

Many are surprised that chiropractors can help with sleep issues. Posture and sleep position plays a huge role in the health of our bodies and our ability to sleep well. If the spine is misaligned, you might naturally compensate for this with poor posture, which compromises your body’s ability to relax. Poor posture can also trigger other back problems which could be preventing you from getting enough sleep.

Chiropractors can also assess your sleeping position in case the way that you try to fall asleep isn’t working. You may even be recommended to try a new mattress or pillow that better supports your sleeping position.

Many of us naturally hold tension in our bodies, and this tension can prevent us from falling or staying asleep. Chiropractic treatments help to alleviate tension from within the body, encouraging blood flow which enables the muscles to relax and make it easier for you to fall asleep.

For many, it is discomfort or pain that is preventing them from getting a good night’s sleep. Spinal adjustments can provide natural pain relief in several ways. Firstly, it encourages the flow of blood around the body, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to areas that require healing. Secondly, it encourages our body to produce our own natural pain-relieving chemicals which keep the discomfort under control.

A Collaborative Approach Postpartum

By Dr. Katrina Greer, Orleans Chiropractor

Melissa originally sought out chiropractic care to reduce her hip pain, improve her sleep, and have a natural labour and delivery.

She began weekly care in her first trimester and travelled 30min for each appointment. Throughout her pregnancy, she was dealing with hip tension on/off and her baby boy was breech. A month before her due date, he turned head down, and was ready to be delivered naturally!

Chiropractic care (the Webster technique) improved her posture, pelvic alignment, and helped her body open up for labour and delivery. Despite regular exercises and preparation, there were still some complications during delivery and she ended up delivering past her due date via C-section.

After her surgery, she was left with numbness and pain along her incision, especially toward her right side. All while taking care of a new baby, her right hip was locking up and causing pain as well. At the time, she heard of something called Scar Release Therapy (SRT) with the Dolphin Neurostim Device. She drove even further to a clinic in the west end, to receive treatment. It was effective in improving circulation, reducing adhesions, and some numbness around the scar.

Unfortunately, her pain in the area persisted.

I decided to get certified in SRT and began treatments for Melissa. I continued with her chiropractic adjustments, and eventually her son came in as well! Her son was and is developing exceptionally well. This is one of the reasons we promote care for the entire family!

While Melissa was dealing with this pain and tissue dysfunction, her little one gave her that much less to worry about as a caring mother. After a few sessions of SRT, there were improvements, but I wanted her to heal more effectively, manage her pain, and also treat some of the hormonal changes that occur postpartum. She was referred to our wonderful Orleans acupuncturist, Veronique.

Melissa began acupuncture and cupping in conjunction with her treatments. While some sessions were tailored more towards hormone and organ function, the majority were centered around her scar. After a couple sessions, she was having a lot less pain, tightness, and increasingly more feeling. She had one more session of SRT, and then focused on cupping and acupuncture with Vea.

At a recent chiro appointment, Melissa mentioned that she had an ultrasound of her incision. Now, over a year postpartum, they wanted to assess her healing as she is preparing to have another baby. She had been feeling a lot better, but they wanted to know how the tissue beneath the scar was healing. The technician reported that her scar had healed amazingly well! It's not every day we can assess the effects of chiropractic, Dolphin Neurostim (SRT), acupuncture and cupping with ultrasound!

At Oaktree, our practitioners are always working together and collaborating for the betterment of our patients! You and your family's quality of life is so important to us. If you have questions about acupuncture or cupping, ask your practitioner. If you are interested to learn more about Scar Release Therapy, contact the Orleans clinic 🙂

Acupuncture for Stress and Sleep

By Veronique Savoie, Downtown and Orleans Acupuncturist

As a Registered Acupuncturist, I see patients for all sorts of health conditions. Many come in with physical pain, hormonal issues, digestive concerns, allergies, and so on. One thing most patients have in common is STRESS.

Many of the stressors we face day to day can trigger a fight-or-flight response. Types of stress vary: emotional, physical, professional, relationship, financial, and overall lifestyle. Prolonged exposure to any type of stress can negatively affect one's health. More specifically, it can result in poorer quality sleep.

When you experience stress, your body undergoes a hormonal response, releasing cortisol and other stress hormones. This hormonal cascade creates a burst of energy that allows you to fight (or flee) from an actual or perceived danger. This is your sympathetic nervous system kicking in. Your parasympathetic system takes the back seat, putting a hold on your body’s rest-and-digest period. Prolonged stress levels therefore decrease quality sleep. Insufficient rest may result in impaired memory and poor mood regulation. Other side effects of stress include headaches, indigestion, high blood pressure, anxiety, and so on. The lack of sleep causes the emotional center of your brain to become more sensitive to negative stimuli, all while the reasoning function of the brain becomes less active. Someone may be more anxious, worrisome, depressed and stressed when tired. Tiredness can lead to increased anxiety, worry, or depression. And here the negative cycle is established. The lack of restorative sleep, leads to more stress, and stress causes sleep loss.

Research has shown acupuncture can help with both stress and sleep disorders. Which one does acupuncture affect? That’s like asking if the chicken or the egg came first.

Receiving acupuncture treatments triggers the parasympathetic system and places your body in a state of relaxation. Acupuncture can decrease anxiety, stimulate melatonin production, induce sleep and reduce sleep disruption. Even a single treatment can result in a profound deep sleep, a benefit that continues with subsequent treatments.

Patients sometimes say they feel tired after a treatment and are unsure what to think. I always laugh a little and say RELAXED! You felt RELAXED after your first treatment. Sometimes chronic pain can also keep you from getting comfortable and drifting off to sleep. Therefore resolving pain with acupuncture may help in getting a good night's rest.

Acupuncture can also be effective for those with sleep apnea caused by weight as it has been shown to help with weight loss and improve overall energy. Who knew acupuncture could do so much?

In addition to performing acupuncture, I often recommend patients consider a few lifestyle changes to help improve their sleep and manage stress. Meditation, yoga, guided breathing, aromatherapy, and limiting alcohol and caffeine are all ways patients can take positive steps in managing their stress and sleep. .

Sleep is such a vital part of a healthy routine, and stress can interrupt it in so many different ways.

If you have any questions about acupuncture and your health please feel free to set up a COMPLIMENTARY 10min Q&A with one of our Acupuncturists, or you can book your initial appointment on our website or over the phone.

And stay tuned for an exciting NEW offering from some of our acupuncturists that will be announced soon which may help with sleep and stress management!
