Subject: September @ Oaktree: Immunity!

September at Oaktree: Immunity!

By Dr. Emilie Perras, Downtown Chiropractor

Ah, the immune system...the topic of conversation for the last 4 years. I'm hoping to share a perspective that may seem different to you, but please read with an open mind 🙂

We are continually surrounded by all sorts of germs (good and bad). Science admits that if we were to kill all the germs and viruses on the planet, all life would cease to exist. In fact, it is these very microbes that help to keep us alive! They strengthen our immune system and help us to fight more serious infections by “cleaning things up.” The truth is they exist for a reason!!

If germs on their own made us sick, every staff member in the hospital would be sick all the time! I'm sure you've heard of situations where one spouse or partner gets sick, but their partner doesn't. Someone sneezes in the elevator...you don't automatically get sick. Why? It has to do with the terrain. What did that germ encounter when it came across individual 1 vs 2?

Living a healthy lifestyle, getting adjusted/acupuncture, eating the right foods, exercising will all help our immune system, building the right "terrain" and creating the defense against potential threats.

“Germ theory” suggests that germs are what we need to worry about and we need to keep finding ways to kill them off. Whereas “terrain theory” argues that if the body is well and balanced, then germs that are a natural part of life and the environment will be dealt with by the body without causing sickness. Both have a place for sure, as some germs are worse than others! But the underlying terrain is what I'd like people to understand better here.

When we get sick, it’s not only because we have gotten something we don’t want (germs); it is because we have lost something that we need.

When most people think of chiropractic care, they often associate it with pain relief, particularly for back or neck issues. However, chiropractic care offers much more than just alleviating pain; it can profoundly enhance overall health and quality of life.

See what this patient had to say:

"Dr. Vanessa is the best! Her methods and goals of chiropractic care are all focused around long term health. Extremely knowledgeable with how chiropractic care affects my health, from neuronal function to postural changes. I have experienced a significant change for the better, built healthier habits and realized that I didn't have to live with daily pain that I thought was normal! Chiropractic care with Dr. Vanessa has helped me exercise better after being free from knee pain (pain that existed for quite a few years!). Better breathing and sleeping because of postural changes with focus on how posture affects neuronal signaling to extremities from my spine. She is also a very welcoming person! The entire staff at Oaktree is so friendly and always embraces everyone with a genuine smile. The best decision for anyone's long term health!"

Chiropractic care works by optimizing the function of the nervous system, which controls nearly every aspect of bodily function. Misalignments and stress in the spine can interfere with neuronal signaling, leading to various health issues, including chronic pain, poor posture, and decreased organ function. Through precise adjustments, we help restore proper alignment, allowing the body to function as it was designed to. For patients at Oaktree, this means a return to pain-free movement and a host of other benefits.

This patient’s story is a powerful testament to the life-enhancing potential of chiropractic care. At Oaktree, our focus goes beyond just relieving pain—it's about helping patients achieve a higher quality of life. Whether it's improving sleep, enhancing exercise performance, or simply helping someone feel their best, chiropractic care provides a path to better health and well-being, one adjustment at a time.

"EXPRESSING HEALTH" or EXPRESSING SICKNESS?

By Dr. Emilie Perras, Downtown Chiropractor

In chiropractic circles we talk about being sick as “expressing health”. Seems weird eh? Aren’t you expressing sickness when you’re coughing or your nose is running?

Changing our mindset about health and our body’s ability to heal

The first thing I want to say about that is that the body is self-healing. You get a paper cut and it heals, right? You scrape your knee - it heals. We can support our body in healing, but it knows what to do. It’s quite incredible when you think about it. It knows when to send red blood cells, white blood cells, clotting factor…and where and when and how much!

I’d like to walk you through something.

Let’s say you or your child has a fever.

With the understanding that the body is self-healing, what is the fever doing?

It’s increasing the temperature to kill off the virus or bacteria.

What happens if we give something to lower the temperature?

It’ll lower the temperature and it will be harder to kill off the virus or bacteria. (the person would be more comfortable, however it could be delaying the actual healing).

Don’t get me wrong, I do believe there is a time for medication (crisis and emergency), but we need to change our mindset about what the body is doing. We need to help the body in the healing process, not hinder it.

There is a similar thought process behind throwing up. Your body is trying to get things out. A cold, get it out through a runny nose and coughing.

At our house when someone is sick we drink lots of water, take hot baths to sweat and pee it out as fast as we can. We take extra vitamins (D3, C, A) to boost our system. We use essential oils that help support the body through self healing. We get adjusted and/or have acupuncture or chinese cupping (you can’t come to our house, but we’ll take care of you at the clinic!)

HEALING BASICS

The brain and spinal cord run, coordinate, control, harmonize and govern every aspect of your health and your existence. You have the most amazing healing power in your nervous system. This is the power that runs your body and heals your body. Without a proper functioning nerve system you CANNOT be well. In order for you to be well, the brain must be able to communicate with the body and its organs through the spinal cord, which is housed by your spine. If you want to be well, you need to keep your nerve system and your circulatory system well. If you are “sick”, or as we say, expressing health, then your body still knows what it’s doing, but may need support!  In clinical trial studies, getting adjusted has been shown to boost immunity 200-400%.

Actions you can take if your body is expressing health or “sickness”

1) GET ADJUSTED! Or get ACUPUNCTURE, or better yet, BOTH!

2)“I have the flu and don’t want to expose your other patients to it!”  We appreciate that! If you are contagious, please stay home. However, if you can come in, it will help you heal better and feel better!

3)Get plenty of rest. SLOW DOWN and stop pushing yourself. The reason your body is expressing health is because you have run it down and now it must try to mend itself in spite of you. Sleep a little!

4) Drink plenty of clean water. Â˝ your body wt. in ounces is a good place to start. Add a green powder and lemon. This will help with cleansing and detoxification.

5) Let your symptoms express themselves. Coughing, sneezing, headaches, shivering, diarrhea, etc. are all lifesaving mechanisms and are aiding in cleansing & detoxifying negative viruses and bacteria from your body. Symptoms are the way your body heals itself!

6) Once you have your strength back, get moving!

Movement will help in lymphatic drainage which aids in cleansing. Getting on a trampoline and gently bouncing is a great way to boost your immune system and push out toxins.

7) THINK POSITIVELY! God gave you everything you need to heal. Fear and worry only make things worse. Have faith, you will heal!

8) Get outside in the sun or take VITAMIN D3. The body requires a daily supply of fresh oxygen as well as sunlight. The sunlight will help in immune system and vitamin D boosting efforts.

9) Eat a healthy diet â€“ Primarily healthy fats and meats, fruits  and vegetables, with nuts and seeds; reduce  grains and sugar which suppress immunity. Include lots of GARLIC – a natural immune enhancer. Stop eating sugar while you’re expressing health (or anything that turns to sugar). Sugar is fertilizer for bacteria, viruses, yeast, mold, cancer, and diseases of all kinds.

This month, Acupuncturist Martin Perras recommends The 4-Hour Body, written by Timothy Ferriss. As a starting point for general health and immunity, this book covers answers for both men and women.

This month at Oaktree we explained to patients that your health is like an iceburg - you may notice small symptoms up top, but the body is holding deeper issues under the surface!

In our explanations, we rewarded patients with a freezie, as we couldn't gift out full icebergs!
