Subject: July news @ Oaktree: kids month! 🤸

Our Kids are the Future

-Dr. Emilie Perras, downtown chiropractor

I usually know what I want to feature in our newsletter each month. July we usually focus on kids, which we will, but I didn’t know what I wanted to say. I decided to scroll through Facebook and see what the heartbeat of Canada is right now….(and yes, my go-to is still FB….one day I’ll catch up to IG, lol)

What I saw is: residential schools, Canada Day, family pictures, summer vacation, patio pics….a fun time in some ways and a very sad in others. For Canada Day, we decided to celebrate the light and take responsibility for the darkness, while acknowledging the existence of both within ourselves and our nation.

I am heartbroken about the residential schools and what has come to light. From everything I’ve been hearing, this is not a surprise for the indigenous community, but it was for me. I first heard  the term a few years ago when my kids had « orange shirt day » at school, but I still didn’t really get it. I think it’s safe to say I still don’t get it, but I am now trying to learn.

Our kids are our future. They must learn so we don’t make the same decisions and we can make a difference. As soon as I learned more we talked about it with our kids. We read 2 kids books about a girl and her experience in residential school (Fatty Legs, and Stranger at Home). I have been recommended more and will keep learning myself and reading with my kids.

Everything I am hearing is we will only make a difference if we learn more and call for change. Personally I also read the Truth and Reconciliation 'Calls to Action' created by the indigenous community in 2015 as was suggested online.

There are many Canadians taking action on multiple levels with benevolent projects in the name of equality, hope and justice for all.  My heart is with the first nations communities and remains hopeful of the principles that this country is doing its best to grow towards.

“The past may have been paved with blood but the future will be paved with light”.

Our kids are also our future in health. Each day at Oaktree we adjust so many kids. We adjust their nervous systems and we know that if a child (and adult) is well adjusted, they are more connected to themselves and to the world. We believe that this will help them make better decisions, have healthier relationships and will make a difference in the world!

We asked some very special kids what they love about Oaktree and their responses were amazing!

Anxiety and Sensory Processing problems in kids. How did we get here?

By Dr. Marie-Pier, Stittsville Chiropractor

We all know kids are more often dealing with anxiety, stress, and other sensory processing disorders (like ADD, ADHD, ASD). These days, many kids’ nervous systems are stressed out and overwhelmed. This leads to them losing their ability to ADAPT and overcome traumas, toxins, and stresses. Often kids are locked in a state of Sustained Sympathetic Dominance. When the sympathetic system (also known as fight or flight) is over-stimulated, they are wound up and can’t rest. That means they are often extra sensitive, easily agitated and irritated, and are not easy to calm down. It may also not allow their body to ‘shut down’, affecting sleep.

How do these dysfunctions happen in the first place? Studies show that a lot of kids experience bullying in school and online, spend a considerable amount of time on social media, and aren’t meeting the guidelines for physical activity. These challenges are putting an incredible amount of stress on kids, and it can keep their nervous system stuck in stress mode.

With an overactive sympathetic system, these kids simply don’t have the ability to slow down and connect with what’s around them. This can affect their ability to handle things like communication, eye contact, and social engagement. They are in constant ‘defense’ mode, which leads to less time in ‘growth and development’ mode.

At Oaktree, we focus on building health from within the body by strengthening the NERVOUS SYSTEM. As the brain and nervous system regain their health and function, they strengthen all the other key systems of the body including the brain, emotional centres, immune system, digestive system, respiratory system, and hormones. We often see kids improve in other things not directly related to the spine like allergies, immune function and breathing difficulties, as well as digestive trouble like constipation and indigestion (even though we're not directly treating these things). All this from a brain that is more connected to the body and able to calm down and relax!

In essence, our nervous system helps us communicate with the world around us and the world within us. For this reason, it’s important that everyone with a nervous system (i.e. everyone) gets checked to ensure all those connections are working properly!
