My roller coaster of a kidney stone!
I had a pretty rough week….Thursday night right after work I was struck with an intense kidney stone attack that brought me to the ER (I had some pain on-off the previous month but wrote it off as muscular…). One night in ER, a second night in the ER and one CT later, I have an 8x12mm stone that will not pass on its own and will require surgery. Oof!
Now, you’ll likely mostly know that us natural health care practitioners tend to do things as natural as possible….I haven’t taken a medication in over 10 years, same with Martin. BUT, I’ve always said the time for our medical model is in times of crisis and emergency. Well, this was it. They say a kidney stone is worse than labour. Yup, agreed. I’ve had 3 natural unmedicated childbirths. That was better.
Sometimes the public views us (chiropractors, acupuncturists….and all other natural health care practitioners) as being against medicine. We are not. We are definitely FOR our health and helping our bodies function and heal as well as possible. We are for using the power within our bodies to do so. We truly believe the body can heal - you have the infinite potential within you to do so!
But, I loved medicine this week. I loved that it could take away the horrible pain, I loved that I could go to a hospital that is always open and get the care I needed. I loved that I was surrounded by amazing and compassionate nurses and doctors. I loved that I could get surgery in a country where I don’t have to pay extra for it. I was at both Montfort and General and am so thankful for their help.
Everyone has their place in health. We don’t have to work against each other - we complement each other. When people need to get healthy or prevent - we can shine! When they are in a crisis, we can often help, but if we can’t, we will send you to your MD.
So now that this crisis is over and I am resting and healing, I transition back to my chiro adjustments, my acupuncture, my supplements, my herbs….to encourage health and to avoid this from happening again.
Side note: My favorite (being sarcastic here) is Martin did some research and went to buy me sauerkraut juice. Yup…. This was when we thought maybe the stone was small enough to pass through. If you ever want to try it….tastes like vomit. Would I drink it again to help in prevention? Yes….I’ve taken all kinds of weird looking or tasting herbs in the past in the name of health. But I really hope I have other options here :)
Now while I am on the topic of medical model vs vitalistic model of health, I’d like to talk a bit about COVID. We have purposefully not talked too much about COVID since there are many polar opposites and debates out there. We do not want to be drawn in.
But we want to say that we will take a stand FOR our bodies and our health. So we motor on, we will keep encouraging you, uplifting you, supporting you, teaching you what we know. You chose us and we choose to keep fighting for YOUR HEALTH.
