Health Is About Adaptability

by Veronique Savoie, Acupuncturist in Orleans and downtown

One of the guiding principles behind acupuncture is simple, yet powerful:

Rather than changing the environment to suit a weakened body, we focus on strengthening the body so it can meet the environment with resilience. This philosophy is shared across many forms of care, including chiropractic, where the goal is also to support the body’s ability to function and adapt—particularly through the nervous system and structural alignment.

In Chinese medicine, health is not static—it’s dynamic. We are meant to flow with the seasons and listen closely to what our bodies are asking for at different times of the year.

Winter is associated with the Kidneys and the energy of stillness. It’s a time to slow down, rest deeply, and turn inward—to “hibernate,” restore, and care for ourselves. Summer, on the other hand, carries the energy of fire and movement. We feel social, active, and outward-focused, yet can easily burn out if we don’t pace ourselves. Fall is connected to the lungs, breath, and immunity, inviting us to let go and prepare for what’s next.

And now—spring.

Spring is about renewal, growth, and upward, outward movement. Just as plants push through the soil, our bodies feel the urge to stretch, reset, and begin again. This season supports change, but it can also bring tension, irritability, allergies, and imbalance if we move too fast or ignore what our bodies need.

What does adaptability really mean?

Life doesn’t pause for us. Seasons shift, stress rises and falls, temperatures change, routines are disrupted. We can’t control all of that—but we can support how well our bodies adapt to it.

In acupuncture, we work with your nervous system, energy flow, and overall balance to help your body respond more efficiently to change. Chiropractic care can complement this by supporting proper alignment and communication within the body, helping it move and function more freely.

When your system is supported, it doesn’t have to work as hard to stay well. People often notice better sleep, steadier energy, improved digestion, and fewer aches—especially during times of seasonal transition. We always treat you as a whole person, while adjusting care to support what the season is asking of your body.

Nature shows us this wisdom every year. Each season has a purpose. Health isn’t about forcing the body to keep up—it’s about cultivating balance so you can move with these cycles instead of against them.

At Oaktree, our goal is not just relief, but resilience. Whether through acupuncture, chiropractic care, or a combination of both, supporting your body during times of transition can make a meaningful difference. The truth is, we are always adapting—we’re here to help your body do that with greater ease, balance, and strength.

SPRING GOALS

By Dr Marie-Pier, Stittsville Chiropractor

Spring is finally here! That doesn't mean that we're necessarily done with the snow, but warmer weather is finally on the horizon!

While most people do their new year's resolutions in January, I've spent the last 5 years doing them in March/April. Spring is a natural time for growth and rebirth, so that's when I prioritize looking at my habits and making changes where I deem necessary. It's also when I do my 'life goals' planning - looking ahead to what I want to achieve in the next 1, 3, 5, and 10 years. I keep all my past ones together, and it's always interesting to see where I hoped I would be and whether my goals have been achieved. These goals are both personal and professional, because my home life is super important to me and I want to continuously focus on learning new things that fill my cup.

Once I've finished with my planning, I look to the 1 year goals and see what action steps I need to be taking now to set myself up for success. Personally, I find a checklist (updated weekly), to be the most helpful at keeping me on track. If there's things I can't/don't want to implement just yet, then I make note in my calendar at the appropriate month to add that to my to-do list.

Utilizing my reminders app is also very helpful for me when some tasks are repetitive (i.e. on a daily or weekly basis). Once the habit is built, I don't need the reminder anymore, but often little things will fall through the cracks if I don't have something to spark my brain in that direction.

What tools do you use to keep yourself on track? We'd love to hear!
