The nervous system is truly incredible. It is one of the very first things that starts to get developed in-utero, as early as 3 weeks with the development of the neural plate! This highlights the importance of the nervous system in the function of everything else in our bodies: if your body does something, the nervous system is responsible. That's why it's important to take care of it!


I feel like everyone lately talks about self-care and regulating your nervous system, but very few people actually understand what that means, so here's a few ways to help your nervous system:

  1. regular chiropractic adjustments and acupuncture

  2. deep breathing (different techniques can be beneficial, including a 'physiological sigh' or my favourite 'box breathing')

  3. stimulating the vagus nerve by humming or gargling

  4. cold exposure (splashing cold water on your face, or just going outside in the winter)

  5. eye movement (moving your eyes up, down, and side-to-side helps to signal safety to the brain)

  6. prioritizing sleep (going to bed early enough, ensuring that you're 'winding down' in the evening without screens)

  7. get outside! Spending time in nature is a great way to disconnect from our busy lives and reset the mind

  8. prioritizing slowing down, sticking to a routine, and practicing mindful eating (no screens, slowing down, really chewing your food)

Which is your favourite way to regulate your nervous system? You don't have to do them all, but finding a few that you can consistently prioritize can make a huge difference in how your body responds to life's stressors.

February is always a season of "a lot" in our house, cold and flu bugs going around, broken sleep, less sunshine and bodies just feeling a bit run down. As a mom and a chiropractor, this is when I’m extra mindful about how we’re supporting our nervous systems as a family.

 

Chiropractic care is something we use regularly in our home, not just when someone is in pain. The nervous system plays a huge role in how our bodies adapt to stress, fight illness, and rest. When the spine isn’t moving well, it can affect how smoothly that communication happens.

 

For us, regular chiropractic care helps support better sleep (for both baby and mom), calmer nervous systems, and overall resilience during cold and flu season. When sleep is disrupted or stress is high, the body has a harder time recovering, and that’s often when I see families getting stuck in a cycle of run-down and exhausted.

 

Chiropractic care isn’t about “treating” colds or flu, but about supporting the body so it can do what it’s designed to do, adapt, heal, and rest. Especially during this season, that support can make a big difference for the whole family.

 

As always, my goal is to help families feel supported, balanced, and resilient, no matter the season.
