NGLA wins 2014 Excellence in Educational Programming Award at the 2014 AFA Annual Meeting
At the annual meeting of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, NGLA was honored with the 2014 Excellence in Educational Programming Award for our program Advisors’ Academy.

Criteria for the award includes: availability to chapters and campuses; concept; originality; behavior change; developmental aspects; and facilitation.

In our citation, NGLA was recognized for undertaking an intentional planning and development strategy to create a self-sustaining model for a broad reaching advisors training program. Work on the Advisors’ Academy began in 2013 when the association contracted RISE Partnerships to develop the curriculum. The program launched at the 2014 NGLA conference and reached over 50 attendees, from 18 campuses and more than 30 affiliations.

In reflecting upon the impact of the Advisors’ Academy, Ben Pendry, NGLA Advisors’ Academy Committee Chair, and Dan Wrona, RISE Partnerships, state, "This program reflects the tremendous opportunity we have to engage our alumni volunteer advisors in meaningful conversations and provide them training and support in the invaluable work they do with our chapters and students. Alumni members of our organizations represent the largest group of stakeholders that we have, and when we mobilize their expertise the sky is the limit to how far we can take our communities.

Registration is now open for the 2015 Advisors’ Academy, February 28 in Hartford, CT. The cost is just $25, and space is limited. To learn more about the program and to register, visit http://www.ngla.org/advisor-academy.

NGLA is grateful for the support from Zeta Tau Alpha and Phi Mu Delta for enabling us to offer this high impact educational experience for a reasonable cost to campuses, organizations, and advisors.

Local Greek Leadership Conference Recap
NGLA’s 2014 Local Greek Leadership Conference (LGLC) was a great success! The conference took place on Saturday, November 22, 2014, at Kean University in New Jersey. We had a record 101 registered participants (both students and advisors), representing 10 institutions, from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The educational sessions offered covered a variety of topics, including chapter management, strategic goal setting, career development and effective use of social media. Among the presenters were Ceasar Castro, National President of Psi Sigma Phi Multicultural Fraternity, Inc., and Shawn Dowiak, Executive Director of Tau Delta Phi Fraternity. Kenny Jones, Associate Director for the Office of Student Affairs/Fraternity & Sorority Life at the University of Pennsylvania, delivered an inspirational keynote address. LGLC attendees described the experience as impactful, especially the opportunity to network with other local fraternities and sororities.

Plans are already underway for the 2015 Local Greek Leadership Conference.

NGLA Volunteer of the Month
NGLA would like to announce its newest Volunteer of the Month, Rafael Matos. Rafael is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and is the Assistant Director of Campus Activities at William Paterson University of New Jersey. He has been an NGLA volunteer for the past year, assisting with our Local Greeks Conference Team and was recently placed as one of our new Volunteer Managers. When Rafael accepted his new position he had no idea that he would be asked to step in and manage our drive-in conferences before he had even completed his official training. In just a few short weeks Rafael has begun to build his team up, solicit program speakers and ensure our students will continue to receive the quality programs that we promise them each year. He has really taken ownership over his team and its tasks and has done so with a smile. We can’t thank him enough for his efforts but we hope that bestowing him with this honor is at least a good way to start. Please join us in congratulating Rafael Matos as our NGLA Volunteer of the Month.
Oops, Our Bad
In our regularly published October edition of the NGLA newsletter, we inadvertently misspelled the affiliation of one of our new volunteers, Rafael Matos, Leadership & Programs Volunteer Manager. Rafael is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Our apologies!
