You don't always get what you want
During a pretty nice snowfall a few weeks ago I went out on a mission to find a white horse to photograph in the snow. It is a shot I've been trying to get for several years, I have this vision that may be impossible to get but I thought that might be the day. I know several farms with white horses and I want the background to be pure white without any buildings or other distractions in the background.

I first went to a little farm that has two white horses but they both had ugly winter coats on. So on to the next farm. There's a white horse there but it was standing right by the barn, not the shot I wanted. Next farm, please. Drat, the horse was in the barn. Of course the farms aren't close together so I've spent almost two hours driving in the heavy snow.

I knew of another place so I headed in that direction. As I was driving I saw a light gray horse in a pasture with a couple of dark horses. I thought it might work so I stopped. The snow was really flying and the gray horse wandered over to me and the other two kept their distance. I worked on the gray horse and got some decent photos and by then the other two horses came over to see what was going on. They kinda stuck together so I started making some shots of them. They were pretty covered with snow and had ice hanging off their hair everywhere, including their eye lashes. One horse walked in front of the other and gave me a bit of a side-eye look.

I was pretty sure I had the shot and when I processed the photo in the computer I decided to try black & white and really push the contrast. I love the way everything came together and the detail in a big print is astounding.

Sometimes I get more than I was looking for.

Openings still available for Acadia in June
Acadia National Park in Maine is one of my favorite places, which is why I do a workshop there at least every two years. This year it is June 3-7 and one of the fun shots we do is light up Bass Harbor Lighthouse with my big flashlight. It is an action packed week, you can get all the details at https://lorenphotos.com/product/acadia-photo-workshop/
Winter White Works
I really enjoy getting out and photographing winter when the snow is flying. This barn in Woodstock has captured my attention for years and I photographed it many times but never really made a shot that I loved. I have tried it in the spring, summer, fall, at sunrise, late in the day and even at night. But a couple of weeks ago it all came together as the snow blurred the background and the details in the barn popped. You can see a larger version at https://lorenphotos.com/photo/white-barn-in-snow
Video online from my seminar on how to photograph the solar eclipse
I had a fun seminar on how to photograph the upcoming total solar eclipse. The video is on my website at https://lorenphotos.com/gallery/how-to-photograph-solar-eclipse/. The April 8 eclipse is visible anywhere in the continental U.S. but there is a band of totality that stretches from Texas to Maine. You really want to be in totality, it is a vastly different experience than a partial eclipse. Just be sure to have on solar eclipse glasses and special solar filters for your camera.
Lightroom Lens Blur Seminar video available
In January I did a fun seminar on a new feature in Lightroom called Lens Blur. It lets you select areas of the photo and make those areas blurry. There's lot of things you can do with it, like get carried away like I did above but it is also very useful to create the feeling of selective focus and isolating your center of interest. Check out the video on my website at https://lorenphotos.com/gallery/lens-blur/
