2019 was a great year

I know I blabber too much about how wonderful my wife Robin is and how lucky I am to do the work that I love, but I am so grateful. As I look back at 2019 and some of the images I made it hits me that even though life isn't perfect it is rather spectacular if I focus on the positive things. Hopefully dealing with the negative is done quickly and completely, which leaves plenty of time and space for the positive. Working with the many photographers at workshops in great places like Tuscany, Iceland, Venice, Chile, New York, Maine and Vermont in 2019 was pure pleasure. Having a photography gallery has been a dream for a long time and I finally made it come true. I pulled some of my favorite photos I made during 2019 and posted them on my blog at https://lorenphotos.com/2019/12/30/favorite-photos-of-2019/. 2020 is only going to be better!
Christmas present leads to new iPhone

I got a nice new Apple Watch for Christmas from my lovely wife Robin. It is pretty cool but a little too advanced, it wouldn’t work with my old iPhone 6, so of course I was forced kicking and crying to upgrade my phone! OK, I’ve been eyeing one for a while so it wasn’t too painful, other than the price. I got the spiffy iPhone 11 Pro Max since it has what is reputed to be a great camera. I hear a lot of people saying their phone can make images as good as my expensive DSLR camera. I tell them to come to my gallery and I’ll show you plenty of shots you aren’t going to make with that phone. But now that I have the fanciest around I need to give it a try. Pudge and I went out in the yard this morning and played around in the snow. The camera did a pretty good job. But then we all know it is the photographer and not the camera!
Indoor photography series
When the weather turns colder and the trees are bare it isn’t always as much fun to get out and shoot and many people lose their photo mojo. Last winter I did a fun workshop series and it went so well that I'm doing it again but with a different slant. We'll talk about some camera basics but we're also going to dig into composition and lighting. There will be fun assignments that you can shoot in your house between sessions and then we look at what everyone creates. You can attend in person or live online. There are night sessions that start Jan. 13 and day sessions starting Jan. 14.
Let's go to Vietnam in 2021!
I have lots of fun things planned but none of them are more exciting than photographing Vietnam in March of 2021. We will be visiting the northern part of the country, starting in Hanoi and then venturing out to the countryside and down to the old DMZ to see remnants of the war. I have a tremendous local photography guide who is going to take us to familiar places but also off the beaten path. It will be quite the adventure. Click here for more details.
Nice installation at Woodstock Inn
The Woodstock Inn purchased four of my photos to hang in their newly renovated conservatory. I worked with an interior designer to get images that worked with the color scene she had selected. I'll brag a little and say they look pretty good! You can read more about the process on my blog.
Classic Blue is color of the year
Every year Pantone selects a color of the year. It is a bit dorky but fun, although I heard a woman on the radio criticizing their selection. How can you criticize a color in general? Anyway, the color is Classic Blue, which truly happens to be one of my favorite colors to photograph. The color appears in the sky twice a day during "Blue Hour" just before sunrise or a little after sunset. No matter the weather the camera sees this lovely, intense Classic Blue in the sky and gives night shots an extra color element. You can read about it on my blog.
Monthly free seminar: Focusing
Each month I do a free photography seminar that you can attend at my gallery in Bedminster, NJ, or online through my video conferencing service. I hear a lot of photographers not feeling too secure about focusing their camera and not getting the most out of autofocus, so we're going to talk about it Jan. 21. Knowing your camera
Modern cameras are rather complex computerized machines that can be rather overwhelming. But they don't need to be frustrating. Make sure you know the basics of the camera before fretting over all the extra stuff. Mastering changing the aperture, the shutter speed and ISO can bring a lot of peace of mind and joy to photography. No matter if you are using Auto exposure, Aperture Priority or Manual exposure, knowing which dial changes what is pretty easy if you take a few minutes to sit down and really take a hard look at it. And then pick up the camera once a week and just play with the dials. It doesn't matter if you make a photo or not, just keep the dials familiar. If you are feeling pretty good with that then push yourself. Is there a button on the camera that you really don't understand? Dig into it, focus on that button for 15 minutes and you'll know it. If you know all the buttons I'll guarantee there is something in the menu that you don't fully understand. There are several things I don't know, so I'm going to use these cold winter nights to full explore the camera and then when I do get out to shoot I'll have full control over the camera.
