“Nowhere can man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat than in his own soul.”
~ Marcus Aurelius

Greetings Fellow Health Enthusiast,

Are you tired of feeling sick and tired? I know how that feels, so I wanted to share one of my go-to health tips for feeling better fast.

Even though I didn't know it at the time, I started meditating in my mid-twenties. If you had asked me what I was doing, I probably would have said I was taking a power nap.

Each day on my lunch break, I would close my eyes for 15 minutes and just let myself decompress. Not because I had heard amazing things about meditation or was influenced by a guru.

It was mostly because my daily stress levels were off the chart. I was a single parent, worked a full time job and attended Northeastern University at night. Trying to juggle an overloaded schedule triggered anxiety and panic attacks which were scary and showing up far too often in my life.

Stress is the leading cause of illness and disease. Let me repeat that: stress is the leading cause of illness and disease. Doesn't is make sense that we would expend a little energy to reduce our stress levels?

Reid Tracy, CEO of Hay House and employee of Hay House for over 27 years admits:

"So last year, I finally started to meditate 10 minutes a day. I began with concentrating on my breath and thinking, "How may I serve?" Which I learned from Wayne Dyer. I practiced clearing my mind and I soon became hooked because I felt much better almost every time I found/made the time to do my meditation. I felt more energy after I meditated as well as more calm and peaceful, especially during stressful situations at work and home with my family. It seems simple but the results are literally life-changing. And it’s just from making 10 minutes a day to clear your mind."

Being in a constant state of stimulation and busyness is breaking down our natural defenses to combat stress. Meditating doesn't have to be a big production. My brother does it on the train during his commute to work. You can do it too.

If you'd like to start your own meditation practice, here are a few ways to get started:

Peace of mind is a beautiful thing. It changes our whole perspective on life for the better. In addition to starting a meditation practice, you might also want to check out the new kid on the block, CBD Oil. It's another tool you can add to your toolbox for reducing stress.

Food Focus: Indian Spiced Turkey Burgers

Source: Practical Paleo

I first heard of this recipe from a good friend and fellow health coach, Claire Haddad. She and I are always on the lookout for things to eat that help fortify intestinal flora. Pair the burgers with a microgreen salad to complete the meal. And consider a gluten free roll to minimize the risk of gluten intolerance symptoms like bloating, gas, and stomach upset.

Note: The spices in this recipe can be added to beef as well. They are meant to be more flavorful than spicy hot.

Ingredients:
• 1 lb. ground turkey (make 2 lbs. to have left-overs)
• 1 tablespoon Indian Spice Blend (see below)

Instructions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine turkey and Indian Spice blend until well integrated. Form the turkey into four 4-ounce patties.
2. Cook in the oven for 20-30 minutes on 375 degrees. Or grill or skillet-cook the burgers for approximately 4 minutes per side over medium-high head or until they are cooked through with no remaining pink and have reached an internal temperature of 165 F.

Indian Spice Blend (recipe yields 4 1/2 tbsp)
Ingredients:
• 2 tbsp onion powder
• 2 tsp garam masala (or curry powder)
• 2 tsp coriander
• 1 tsp sea salt
• 1 tsp black pepper
• 1/2 tsp cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes

Cold and Flu Season Delayed

As a friend of mine recently said, April is the new January. At least in the Northeast part of the US. Our mild winter seems to have delayed the cold and flu season. Everywhere you turn someone is coughing, sneezing or home with the flu or stomach bug. Here's a few of my top tips for keeping colds and flu at bay.

  • Avoid sugar and sugary snacks. Sugar depletes our immune system and increases inflammation.
  • Increase Vitamin C to 1000-2000 mgs a day if you can tolerate it. Check with your wellness practitioner if in doubt.
  • If you feel tired and run down, go to bed early. Our bodies heal while we sleep.
  • Use high quality brand essential oils like doTERRA to boost immunity. On Guard is great for safeguarding against colds and flu. Breathe opens the airways and helps quell coughs. Peppermint is great for relieving headache and body pain. And it also opens up the airways.
Hang in there. Summer is coming!
