Subject: A different kind of cruise 🇺🇸

Memorial Day has always meant a little more to me because of my grandfather. He was a WWII veteran, and one conversation with him stayed with me in a way I didn’t really appreciate until years later.

I remember telling him that I was going on a cruise for vacation. He casually replied, “I went on a cruise once too — to the Philippines.”

At first, I was surprised. As far as I knew, my grandfather had never traveled for pleasure. My grandmother loved trips and adventures with her girlfriends, but he had little interest in vacations beyond short hunting trips with his brothers.

Then it hit me.

He wasn’t talking about a leisure cruise.
He was talking about a battleship.

In that moment, I understood something more deeply than I had before. The freedoms, comforts, and ordinary joys we often take for granted were made possible by people who lived through extraordinary sacrifice.

This Memorial Day, I’m thinking about him — and about all those who served, sacrificed, and carried experiences many of us will never fully understand.

May we honor them not only with remembrance, but with gratitude for the lives we are able to live because of them.

Wishing you and your loved ones a peaceful Memorial Day weekend.

Warmly,
