Say “female sleuth” to most authors or readers, and they picture a bakery, a cat, and a body in the town square.
That’s cozy. And cozy is enormous, no doubt: more than 65,000 English-language titles in the Kindle category, with more than 1,700 new titles entering the market every month.
But sitting right beside it are two segments that cozy’s shadow tends to hide: the amateur sleuth who isn’t charming and the professional female detective (police detective, PI, federal agent, forensic specialist, and so on). Together, they form a market that behaves very differently from cozy.
Two Very Different Markets
The cozy reader is buying safety. The non-cozy reader is buying jeopardy.
And the economics of the segments are different, too.
Taken together, this non-cozy Kindle market is no smaller than cozy, while its average sales level is roughly twice what we measured for cozy. And that’s without factoring in the top-selling psychological and domestic thriller segment, which we excluded from the analysis.
Overall, search interest for “female detective” has surged by a surprising 200% over the past two years.
The bestseller lists in which non-cozy female-protagonist mystery, thriller, and suspense titles most frequently appear have also seen a strong rebound after years of post-pandemic decline.
And as of this writing, 70 of the books in the current Kindle Mystery, Thriller & Suspense Top 100 were published under female author names or pen names. More often than not, these authors opt for a female protagonist.
Creating Transparency
The book market for female detectives and sleuths is not very transparent, though, as these titles are scattered across a wide range of bestseller lists, from mysteries and police procedurals to thrillers and suspense. So, once again, we dug deep to crack the case. This K-lytics report reveals the true top performers in these ebook market segments, based on an analysis of more than 6,000 titles.
And then there is the issue of identifying female protagonists. Here, we could really geek out. I mean, we went through thousands of book descriptions looking for cases in which female pronouns outnumbered male pronouns, and cross-checked the data against a database of 16,000 female first names. It turns out there is a way to track down female-protagonist thrillers and mysteries: You just need a male protagonist number cruncher. (Just kidding!)
