Category Updates
This new edition provides a complete overview of all categories available in the undisputed #1 genre on Kindle: Romance!
The Romance category hierarchy remained stable over the past six months, allowing us to track reliable sales-rank trends. We recorded only five changes. Among the more significant ones were the following:
Amazon added a Teen & Adult » Romance » Fantasy category. This provides an additional home for Romantasy titles targeted at teen and YA audiences. Interestingly, this addition does not mirror the Romantasy nomenclature Amazon now uses in the adult Romance category.
Amazon also introduced a dedicated Highlanders subcategory in Romance » Historical » Scottish. Frankly, I do not understand this addition, neither commercially nor logically. Historical Romance is already the most granular Romance category aside from Paranormal Romance. Why add a single Level 4 category under Scottish historical romance? It simply does not make sense.
Stable Romance Sales
Overall, Romance has maintained its leading position compared with other genres, although the bestseller list's average ranking level is slightly lower than it was last year. Google search volume for "Romance books" is at an all-time high. However, it appears that the change to Amazon's sales-rank update interval introduced last May has negatively affected many Romance subcategories.
