Hi Friend,
Are AI slop books, content farms, and Kindle click bots getting out of hand?
Crowds vs. Lonely Places
Let me ask you something first. Where are you more likely to have your pocket picked: standing alone in a meadow in the countryside, or in a packed subway station next to a tourist hotspot at rush hour?
Right. Pickpockets go where the money is, and the money is in the crowds.
Kindle works the same way. Scammers go where the money is, and on Kindle that means the high-selling, competitive categories.
You can almost turn it around. Want to find a lucrative fiction market? Look for a high-ranking category with lots of books and lots of AI slop. Sad, but true.
Case in Point: Billionaire Romance
On September 21, Amazon cut the number of new titles you can create on KDP to two per format per week. The timing was almost ironic. We were just wrapping up data collection for our 2026 Billionaire Romance Report, and September brought the largest influx of new titles we have ever seen in this genre.
One look at the covers, titles, reviews, author pages, and back catalogs was enough. They all pointed to AI mass production.
A year ago, books like these were more of a nuisance than anything else. They were there, but hardly anyone bought them. This year is different. A significant number made it into the top 500 sellers of the last 90 days, many showing telltale red flags of rank and page-read manipulation. In other words, this time they cut into the KDP Select Global Fund, the same pool that pays legitimate authors.
Protecting the Report's Integrity
Normally, I’m a big fan of reporting a market as it is. In our monthly ELITE category performance database, for example, we report bestseller list performance exactly as you find it in the Kindle store. Nobody can police category pollution across 8,000+ categories. Where would you start? Where would you stop? It’s better to report the data as it is and interpret it correctly than to change it.
A genre report is different. Here I have editorial discretion, and we always aim to build a "Virtual Bestseller List" that truly reflects the genre, without false positives. And I wouldn’t be doing you a service by handing you a report in which approximately 20% of the top 500 alone are obvious AI slop, if not outright scams.
So we did what K-lytics does. We ran more than 15 red-flag checks, plus quantitative scoring, across the top 1,000 billionaire romances to filter out the "highly questionable" titles. (I explain the process in the seminar video that comes with the report.)
Is the result perfect? It never will be. In fact, our strict filtering means we likely filtered out a few legitimate titles along the way. Note that Amazon does not prohibit using AI for writing, so we chose to target the most suspicious footprints—especially those where star rating profiles do not dovetail with heavy reviewer complaints. I am confident this is the most relevant data set available to help you write and compete in this lucrative genre.
Why Billionaire Romance Still Matters
FACT 1️) It is still the fifth-highest-selling romance category on Kindle.
FACT 2) Google search interest in “billionaire romance” was higher over the past twelve months than ever before, even though more and more book discovery now happens away from Google.
FACT 3) The genre blends and cross-sells extremely well with other high-selling tropes.
And as I said at the outset: where there is money, there is competition. To compete, you need a standout craft and writing quality first, and the best possible market data right after. At the end of the day, positive reader feedback, true demand, and legitimate marketing will prevail. They always have.
So we didn’t let the recent flood drag us down, and we proudly present the sixth edition of our Billionaire Romance genre report:
