What's up with Jim?

For years, Jim has been hearing from fans who want more Dresden merch, and now he wants to deliver! In addition to trying to get a legal version of the Dresden and Butters riding Sue the Dinosaur with the quote "Polka will never die," Jim wants to know what other merch you'd like to see.

If you're interested in purchasing Dresden merch and there's something specific you'd like to see now's the time to say so! Just fill out this form:

On a personal note... Meet Melissa F. Olson!

Picture of a younger Jim Butcher (with long brown hair!) and a youthful Melisaa F. Olson smiling as they pose together at a con.

Melissa F. Olson is a fellow urban fantasy writer, and possibly one of the kindest, funniest people you could hope to meet at Dragon Con.

Don't believe me? Here's the card she sent after my wedding:

A pop up Jaws card with a shark erupting from the water and the text: “Have a Killer day!“

And the card read as follows:

"Congratulations on your wedding Jenny and Jim! You're gonna need a bigger boat.

Here's to swimmin' with bow-legged women,

 Melissa and Brian

[Jim being legally married is all well and good but don't think this changes who gives Jenny's eulogy in the event of an orca/moose demise. It's still me.]

If you're looking for a new series to get into while you wait for Mirror, Mirror (43% done!), and you want to simultaneously support a hilarious (slightly odd) author in the process, Amazon currently has Melissa's Boundary Magic on sale.

Boundary Crossed, Boundary Magic #1

After her twin sister’s brutal murder, former US Army Sergeant Allison “Lex” Luther vowed to protect her niece, Charlie. So when two vampires try to kidnap the baby, it quickly turns into a fight to the death—Lex’s death, that is.

She wakes up to two shocking discoveries: she has miraculously survived the fight, and baby Charlie is a “null,” gifted with the ability to weaken supernatural forces...and a target for creatures who want to control that power. Determined to guarantee her niece’s safety, Lex makes a deal with the local vampires. She sets out with the mysterious—and undead—“fixer” Quinn to track down whoever’s responsible for the kidnapping, sharpening her newfound magic skills along the way. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her powers become.

Boundary Crossed is a dark, thrilling journey into a world where the line between living and dead isn’t nearly as solid as it appears...

Quote from the book:

"Killing someone in the middle of the sentence leaves a disturbing lack of closure. I know this from experience."

Ask Me Anything!

As someone who has grown up reading your books (I'm an 02 kid and will be 23 in the later part of the year), your work has greatly influenced my own writing. I find I have so many ideas that I want to write but often find myself bouncing from project to project rather than finishing any of them. What advice do you have for an aspiring writer who struggles with this? How have you dealt with writers block and other such hurdles?

I don't believe in writer's block. Sometimes I would just really rather be playing video games. As far as sticking on one project, you kind of have to if you want to do the job. If you keep getting distracted by other settings/ideas, it might help to write a series with a big world that can hold multiple ideas.

Any progress on that sci-fi book/story? Space Marshalls was it? Also, what about an up to date guess about the number of Cinder Spires books we will get to enjoy?

Haven't been working on the sci-fi because I need to finish Dresden/Cinder Spires. There will be 6 Cinder Spires books.

Are you on any newer social media? I stopped using Twitter.

Mostly just Twitter and Facebook.

How do I become a beta reader for Jim?

Fill out this form. Jim will periodically choose new beta readers from those submissions.

Where can I buy official Jim Butcher merchandise?

Jim just opened a merch store! Look for new products to be added a few times a year.

Will there be another Dresden TV show?

There is significant interest at the moment. Money has changed hands, so it's looking good. Nothing certain yet, but it looks good. As soon as we know something, you'll be the first to know!

I'm a writer! Does Jim have any advice for me?

Jim heartily recommends his teacher's book, the Fantasy Fiction Formula. Deborah Chester is the one who taught Jim to write, and if you want to learn from the same person who taught him, check out Deborah's book.

Until next month, happy reading!
