NEWS FROM OUR PROJECTS
Tackling Common Challenges
Border guards will have new assistants on duty

Our project K-9 evolution continues joint seminars, dog trainings, practical exercises and other activities, aimed at improving the qualification of border guard officers working with service dogs in Latvia and Lithuania. Project partners from Latgale region (LV) and Vilnius County (LT) are also developing the material and technical training base, making the detection of criminal activities more effective and increasing the level of security in border regions.
On Latvian side, a few months ago, a Belgian shepherd Bris gave birth to a litter of puppies. The litter consisted of nine puppies named Nora, Nargiza, Nero, Nixe, Naya, Nikki, Nisha, Narro and Napoleon. Puppies, found suitable for the State Border Guard service, will be distributed among the territorial administrations or will be assigned to cadets graduating from the training programme “Border Guard”. After about a year and a half the dogs will start performing their duties on the country border, but at first each puppy needs to continue trainings with their dog handler and participate in various training courses to be fully prepared for future service.
Promoting Historical Heritage
How to answer a why question: two innovative museums looking for solution together

On June 6 – 7, 2023 in Panevezys, during the project’s MUSEUM 2020 Final Symposium with the provocative title “Why”/ “Kāpēc” the historical heritage professionals from Lithuania and Latvia shared their experience in search of the recipe for a successful exhibition and innovative museum communication.
The newly created exposition “EMIGRATE? STAY? RETURN?” was presented to guests from Preili Museum of History and Applied Arts and representatives of Panevezys Local Lore Museum. The guided tour featuring the impressive historical expositions “Dialogues of Époques”, as well as presenting the Centre for Restoration and Education was organised. Participants of the symposium also visited the notable cultural institutions: Pragiedruliai Art Space and Panevezys Civic Art Gallery. Apart from new interactive expositions created, the partners from Preili developed a mobile app showing nowadays not existing heritage objects in 3D view. Also, the cycle of virtual exhibitions was created and published via social media and websites of partners, as well as the E-handbook “Museum 2025” paying a particular attention to innovations and revealing the methods for museums in the regions to continue their digital journey has been created.
Partners are happy to admit that the most important achievement of the common project activities – a very warm friendship with the neighbours established!

Promoting Social Inclusion
Social inclusion of children through sport and art activities

Latvia and Lithuania face similar social integration challenges in the Programme area, as disability and social exclusion has no nationality or borders and requires a comprehensive approach and cooperation of social care service specialists. To increase the access of vulnerable children and teenagers to social inclusion services, our two projects DISCOVER ME and Enjoy Being Together have organised the series of workshops and masterclasses, informal arts and crafts lessons and various sports in Alytus County (LT) and Latgale region (LV). In addition, both projects have organised the good practice exchange events and trainings for social care specialists and teachers. The Multi-sensory Centre was established and equipped in Kraslava (LV) and the Art School and Children Creativity Centre was renovated in Varena (LT). These projects have promoted social inclusion changing the attitude of the society towards people facing certain challenges and helped vulnerable children to benefit from a more active social life and an easier learning process in the border regions.
Preserving Traditional Skills
Project and art – what can be in common

How did the municipality of Ludza from Latvia and Moletai School of Art from Lithuania link these two words? It was very simple – a project was created to preserve ancient crafts in Latgale Region of Latvia and north-eastern Lithuania. This CraftWays journey has been quite winding, with obstacles such as pandemics and other terrible world events, but the partners have successfully reached the end of the road. The best way to preserve a skill is to pass it on to the younger generation, that is why the project involved art schools from Latgale Region (LV) and Utena County (LT). The project partners have been jointly implementing activities and events aimed at preserving the crafts of ceramics, woodworking, weaving and painting. All trainings are recorded and available on YouTube. Teachers from both schools participated in the workshops of Viljandi Culture Academy of the University of Tartu. Also, project partners purchased tools, equipment and furniture for art schools, and the woodworking classroom at the J. Soikāns Ludza Art School is now completely renovated and equipped, allowing the school to resume teaching woodcraft.
