The Narrow Way Workout

This Sunday’s Gospel (Luke 13:22–30) is one of Jesus’ most sobering. When asked if only a few will be saved, He replies: “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” Many, He warns, will presume that merely being near Him is enough—eating with Him, listening to Him, identifying with His company. But the Master’s reply is chilling: “I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers!”

What’s at stake is more than religious activity. Jesus calls us not to proximity, but transformation. The Christian life is training: effort, discipline, sacrifice, and above all, love. If we’re honest, many of us can relate to signs that we’re not truly training: feeling spiritually stagnant despite activity, struggling to live faith at home, presuming on mercy without effort, treating worship as obligation, or avoiding sacrifice and discomfort.

In this week’s IGNITE Radio Live, we confront the whispered lies of Malphas (our adversary) and hear Christ’s call to enter the training ground of love. Here are five workouts for the soul:

1) Spiritual Stagnation – Malphas whispers, “You already belong—why strive further?” But the Catechism reminds us: “Conversion is a lifelong task” (CCC 1428). Growth requires zeal, fresh hunger, and daily steps forward.

2) Head Knowledge Without Heart Practice – Malphas says, “Knowing is enough.” Yet St. Francis de Sales insists: “An ounce of practice is worth more than a ton of preaching.” Authentic discipleship integrates belief and daily living.

3) Presuming Mercy Without Effort – Malphas coos, “God forgives everything—why worry?” But mercy is a lifeline, not a license. Augustine reminds us: “God created us without us, but He will not save us without us.”

4) Treating Prayer and Worship as Obligation – Malphas mutters, “Just check the box.” But St. Teresa of Ávila teaches: “Prayer is nothing else than an intimate sharing between friends.” Worship is encounter, not routine.

5) Avoiding Sacrifice and Discomfort – Malphas lulls, “God wants you safe and comfortable.” But Christ says, “Take up your cross daily” (Luke 9:23). Real love demands fortitude—training with effort, cost, and surrender.

The narrow gate is not a cruel obstacle, but a training ground for eternal joy. This week, join us as we expose the lies, embrace the truth, and train together for the Kingdom.

Be refreshed. Be challenged. Be transformed.
