The Fire That Divides: Living the Cost of Discipleship
When Jesus says in Luke 12:49–53, “I have come to set the earth on fire… Do you think that I have come to bring peace? No, I tell you, but rather division,” it’s jarring. Isn’t He the Prince of Peace? And yet, here He’s not speaking of warm sentiment or social ease—He’s speaking of the purifying fire of God’s love. The same flame that comforts the faithful burns away sin, exposes false allegiances, and demands decision.
The “baptism” He refers to is His Passion—the flood of mercy poured out from the Cross. But mercy demands a choice: Will we conform to Him or to the world? That choice will sometimes divide even families. The stakes are eternal, and the danger is real: the lukewarmness that quenches the Spirit can kill a soul long before open rebellion does.
In our homes, this fire looks like parents leading with courage and tenderness—praying over their families in Jesus’ name, speaking the truth in love, and refusing to compromise when the world calls evil good. It means facing temporary tension for the sake of eternal joy. As the Catechism reminds us: “The Holy Spirit… comes to meet us and kindles faith in us” (CCC 683).
