New Podcast: Self-Protection - Viking Style!

Self-Protection: Viking Style!Hi All!

Welcome to the latest newsletter! The first thing to let you know about is that you can save 15% on all our DVDs and downloads over the Easter weekend (ends midnight Monday). Just add the DVDs or downloads to your cart and the website will automatically apply the discount (see section 1).

We also have a new podcast out today! It’s called “Self-Protection: Viking Style!” The podcast looks at a Viking wisdom poem (which is well over 1000 years old) and discuss the bits that relate to personal safety, self-protection and success in battle. The poem covers awareness, dealing with difficult and potentially violent people, the causes of conflict, good personal safety habits, martial focus, what is worth fighting for and what is not, the difference between the wise use of discretion and cowardice, and a lot more! (See section 2).

Also be sure to check out the three new videos since the last newsletter. The videos show drills for punching from a seated position, Pinan / Heian Sandan arm-lock counters, and applications for back flips (an April fool!).

Thanks for your support of these newsletters!

2 - New Podcast: Self-Protection - Viking Style!

Self-Protection: Viking Style!Put on your horned-helmets and pick up your battle axes … it’s time to look at self-protection: Viking Style!

The podcast looks at a Viking wisdom poem (which is well over 1000 years old) and discuss the bits that relate to personal safety, self-protection and success in battle. As I hope you will agree, much of it rings true today and has quite a bit in common with the advice and guidance we find passed down to us in the traditional martial arts.

The poem covers awareness, dealing with difficult and potentially violent people, the causes of conflict, good personal safety habits, martial focus, what is worth fighting for and what is not, the difference between the wise use of discretion and cowardice, and a lot more!

I must confess that the TV show Vikings was part of the inspiration for this podcast! I have combined my interests in martial arts, self-protection, history and mythology into, what I hope you’ll agree, makes for an interesting and entertaining way to discuss many of often overlooked, and yet vitally important, aspects of modern day self-protection.

All the best,

Iain

PS I’m aware that that Vikings never wore horned-helmets in battle :-)

3 - Two New Online Bunkai Videos ... and one April Fool ;-)

I've added three new videos few weeks since the last newsletter ... but one of them as an April Fool's day prank ;-)

1) Striking from a seated position

This video show extracts of a session on striking from non-ideal positions. In this clip you can see some of the drills and exercises for striking from a seated position. This included being approached from the front, and from the side (as you would be in a car, bus, train, etc). The video also shows some examples of how we can use dialogue to create an opening for a strike in order to escape from danger.

It’s never simple, pretty or easy to generate power from these non-ideal positions … which is why they need to be practised. In competitive fights and dojo sparring and we generally start on our feet, facing our opponent and ready to engage. The same cannot be said for self-protection. We can be approached / attacked when seated or when using transport and hence this needs to be part of training.

2) Pinan Sandan Arm Bar Escape

It is my view view that the Pinan / Heian series records a complete combative system. It is also my view that the kata present the techniques in the order they should be learnt and studied.

Among other things, Pinan Shodan (Heian Nidan) teach us how to control the enemy's limbs. Pinan Nidan (Heian Shodan) builds on that and teaches how to both lock the enemy’s limbs and escape from attempts to manipulate our own limbs. Having learnt those skills, the sequence shown in this clip (from Pinan Sandan) gives us an alternate counter should the previous ones fail.

3) Back Flip Applications (April Fool)

I think it is the best book on the market on this subject, and it should be a part of your library if you are teaching self-defence, of even if you are remotely interested in the subject. Comprehensive and lifesaving.” – Geoff Thompson 8th Dan BCA, WCA

This short easy to read book is a must for all self-defence and martial arts instructors in England and Wales! A sound understanding of the legalities of self-defence is vital if you are to teach competently. Sadly, what we most frequently see is the law being either completely ignored or misinformation being peddled as if it were fact. This book provides and very easy to understand practical guide that cuts through the misinformation and will be an invaluable resource for teacher and student alike. Leigh Simms has made a superb job of producing this very practical and understandable guide to the legalities of self-defence England and Wales! All competent and responsible instructors will ensure they read this book.” – Iain Abernethy 6th Dan BCA, WCA

7 - The World Combat Association

Iain’s Introduction To The WCA

The exponential growth in those returning to practicing the martial arts in a practical way means that there is now a pressing need for a global dedicated association so practitioners of applied martial arts can band together for the benefit of both the arts and themselves.

The bodies set up to promote sporting offshoots or a particular style or methodology – as useful as they can be for their members – do little to promote and enhance what we see as an extremely important aspect of the martial arts.

An open and inclusive worldwide association is needed for pragmatic traditionalists and practitioners of functional martial arts. The World Combat Association (WCA) fulfils this need!

Many martial arts bodies have a recurring bad habit of trying to limit the freedom of their members and hence the WCA aims promote and enhance the wide variety of pragmatic approaches without imposing unnecessary limits upon people.

The WCA will wholly dedicated to the promotion and furtherance of applied martial arts. Your standard association will typically deal with things like insurance, providing representatives for competitions etc. That is not the role of the WCA.

The WCA has been set up to be an independent association of likeminded individuals who believe that applied martial arts needs a body to address the specific issues associated with our pragmatic approaches ....
