For my part, life has been demanding on all fronts and hence I am still not as regular with these newsletters as I wish to be. The good news is that I am still committed to getting as many out as time permits. Furthermore, I always want these newsletters to useful and something special. Lots of things that I think will be of interest in this one!

HAVE YOUR OWN APP (and website!)
As members of my app will be aware, a year or so ago the app was rebuilt from scratch. The prior firm I was in partnership where no longer offering the service and support I required. I paid a group of programmers to develop a new version of the app and was delighted with the result. They have been amazing both in terms of the quality of their work and the speed and effectiveness of their ongoing support.
It was not long after the rebuild of my app that a number of martial arts instructors got in touch to ask who made the app and if they could have one of their own. The code the app is based on is something I paid for (not cheap!) and own, but I was happy for others to have their own version of it if it would be helpful to them.
I reached out to the developers and asked if they would be happy to make bespoke apps for others using my code as a base. To be honest, they were a little reluctant at first, but eventually agreed to do it for those who had been in contact. There are now a number of schools and instructors who have their own apps with their own branding and layout. They are as happy with theirs as I am with mine. The good news is, having made a few for others, the team of developers are happy to make apps for others too! So, if you want your own app for your club / school / association, you can have it!
This is the deal the app developers are currently offering:
1) The £1000 initial set up fee is currently being waived! I paid over five times that to get mine built so FREE set up is an amazing offer!
2) The monthly fee is dependent on the number of users so there are options for groups of all sizes.
3) The team have also said that they will build a website and set up a bespoke email address (i.e. sensei @ nameofyourgroup. com) for FREE for all customers. Again, that’s an amazing offer as you’d probably pay more for that alone!
4) The team are only taking on a small number of new people at any one time so they can work closely with you to get everything exactly as you want it. The disadvantage is that it means some may have to wait, but the HUGE advantage is you get a close and personal service.
5) You will primarily work with the app team, but I am always on hand to help with the martial arts content side of things.
Your app will be listed under your group name in both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It will have the layout and content you want. A private website for you to manage your app will be built and it’s super easy to use! You will also have ongoing support from the team. You will also have full control on who has access to the app and on what basis i.e. people can pay a fee, have it included as part of the membership of your group, etc.
In the past, association handbooks, DVDs, downloads, etc were common, but in the modern age an app that your students will have on their phone / tablet is the way to go. You will also have the ability to simply send push messages to all members which is a fantastic way to keep in touch!
As subscribers to my app will know, the app is my favourite project! We have developed a great community and it’s been the most efficient and effective way I have come across to interact with people outside of the dojo in my 25 years of sharing material.

The app has now been running since 2017 and is updated weekly. The original aim had been one new video a week but, as subscribers know, I normally add two or three. We are now at the point where I don’t think it would be humanly possible for someone new to the app to view all of the 1500+ hours of content!
For a few pounds each month, you gain access to a HUGE and searchable database of all things practical karate including kata bunkai, impact drills, solo training, footage from seminars, discussions on karate history and principles, self-protection information, etc. We also have exclusive online training sessions at various throughout the year (all of that footage is also added to the app). The economy of scale also means it is a hell of a lot cheaper than purchasing individual downloads, DVDs, etc. For example, subscribing for three months will cost the same as one DVD!
