Update: Karate Grappling Program (Jan to May 11), Masahiko Kimura Videos,

Funny "Self-Defence" Video, ...

Hi All,

Iain AbernethyFollowing the October newsletter, this is just a quick update on a few things that I hope are of interest. The main thing is that it is now possible to book places on the Karate Grappling Program I’ll be running from January 2011 to May 2011! This will be five month program on grappling as it relates to kata and self-defence (as opposed to the high-level skills needed to out grapple a grappler) and it will be ideal for those who want to practise and teach karate as the holistic system it originally was. You can find more details in section 1 and please act quickly if you want to take part.

The second thing is that Extreme Impact 6 to 10 can now be downloaded from the website. If you get all 5 of the new ones, that’s around two and a half hours of drills you can use in training and teaching for just £38.80.

Some new videos have also been added to the forum. We have some videos of Masahiko Kimura (Judo Legend & Karateka) that I’m sure you’ll find interesting (see section 2). We also have a “self-defence” spoof that I found very funny (see section 5). I hope you enjoy the videos and please feel free to share your thoughts via the forum.

In the last newsletter, I mentioned that there were only 5 days left available for seminars in the first half of 2011; well one week later and that is down to 3. If you do want me to visit your dojo in the first half of 2011, please contact me ASAP. I hate to disappoint people, but I hope those who I am not able to accommodate will understand that I am no longer able to meet all requests.

In section 8 you can find details on all the seminars that have been finalised for the rest of this year and the first half of 2011. Details are still being finalised for others including a weekend in Belgium (19th and 20th of March) and Hamburg (15th and 16th of January). I’ll forward details when I have them.

The final thing is an update on the “Beyond Bunkai” DVD. Essentially the DVD will be ready sooner rather than later! See section 4.

I hope everything is of interest and I’ll be back in touch in early November with a new podcast, a new online bunkai video, and all the usual news and updates!

All the best,

Iain

PS Please email me (iain@iainabernethy.com) your questions or themes you want me to cover in the podcast within the next 7 days or so. Thank you!

"In karate, hitting, thrusting, and kicking are not the only methods, throwing techniques and pressure against joints are included" - Gichin Funakoshi

The Okinawan name for our style of wrestling is Tegumi … I came to realise that Tegumi offers a unique opportunity for training … it need not be limited to two participants” – Gichin Funakoshi

1 - Karate Grappling Program (Jan 2011 to May 2011)

Karate Grappling ProgramIt is now almost 10 years since “Karate’s Grappling Methods” was published! To mark this anniversary – and to meet requests I’ve been getting for some time for an in-depth program of learning – I’ve organised a special training course for all those who believe that karate should be a holistic and pragmatic system.

Starting in January of 2011, I will be running an in-depth training program on karate grappling for a limited number of people. The course will run for 5 months (1 full day per month) and people must be able to attend all days. The course will be certificated by me (see sample image), is open to just 20 people (1st come, 1st served) and will cover the following topics:

• How to Recognise Grappling in Kata

• Integrating Striking and Grappling

• Grappling when Weapons are involved

• Simple Gripping Skills

• Chokes and Strangles

• Effective Seizing and Gouging

• The Principles of Joint-Locking

• Throws and Takedowns (including the nine throws of Gichin Funakoshi)

• The Role of Grappling in Self-Protection

• Grappling and Multiple Opponents (i.e. how to get out of there and avoid grappling)

• Realistic Ground Fighting (i.e. do damage and get up)

• Traditional Karate Grappling Drills

The course will be open to all grades, will start in January of 2011, and will be certificated. This is a special course to mark the 10th anniversary of the Karate's Grappling Methods book and will be open to a maximum of 20 people.

2 - Masahiko Kimura (Judo Legend and Karateka) Videos

Masahiko Kimura (judo legend and karateka)Earlier this week I added a couple videos of Judo legend Masahiko Kimura to the website:

http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/masahiko-kimura-videos

Kimura is regarded as one of the greatest judoka of all time and he also studied karate under Gichin Funakoshi (Shotokan) and So Nei Chu (Goju) - becoming an assistant instructor of the latter’s dojo - and he also had connections with karate greats Gogen Yamaguchi and Mas Oyama. Kimura’s bout with Hélio Gracie is why the reverse ude-garami is frequently called “The Kimura” in BJJ and MMA.

Mas Oyama once wrote, “As one of my Senpai, there was a judo master named Masahiko Kimura. In judo, simply there has never been a man as strong as this man was. He was such a master in the art of judo to the extent that is frequently said: ‘There has been no Kimura before Kimura. There will be no Kimura after Kimura.’”

I hope you find the clips interesting. You can view them, and comment on them, via the link below:

All the best,

Iain

4 - "Beyond Bunkai" DVD update

Just a quick note to let you know that both the PAL and NTSC Masters of “Beyond Bunkai” are now with me! We hope to get the DVDs into production next week and we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as the DVDs are available.

For those who don’t know, “Beyond Bunkai” provides detailed instruction on a non-scripted semi-live flow drill that utilises all the motions from Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan kata. It’s aimed at karateka who already have a solid appreciation of bunkai and now wish to practise in a more realistic and combative way that involves adapting to the enemy’s attempts to neutralise your attacks and ensuring you can make an effective escape.

Personally, I think it is the best thing we’ve done to date and I look forward to seeing if you agree. More news to follow soon!

All the best,

Iain
