Extreme Impact 6 to 10 now live, Two New Podcasts,

Online Bunkai Drill & In-Depth Group Training with Iain Abernethy

Hi All,

Extreme ImpactAs the vast majority of you will know, the new look website has got off to a great start! Thanks to everyone who has joined, all those who have given their feedback, and especially those who have got the new forum off to a flying start!

The aim of the website is to be a central, free to use, resource for a vibrant community of “traditional pragmatists”. It’s therefore great to see so many make use of the website, both as visitors and contributors, and I just want you to know I really appreciate all your help and support. Thank you!

The first bit of news is that the long awaited new Extreme Impact units are now live! We’ve put five previews on the website (see section 3) and the full units are now all available for purchase.

We also have two new podcasts for you this month. One by myself called “Knowledge is NOT Power” (see section 1) and the other is the first part of a conversation with myself, Kris Wilder, Alan Peasland, Marc “Animal” MacYoung, Nicholas Yang and Rory Miller (see section 5).

Please also check out the basic Pinan Shodan / Heian Nidan flow drill online video we recently added to the website (section 2).

One very exciting bit of news for those based in the UK is the launch of Peter Consterdine’s & Geoff Thompson’s “British Combat Karate Association”! You can find all the details in section 4 and information packs can be downloaded from my website. I am both a grading officer and part of the technical committee for the BCKA and I’m sure you’ll agree that the association is certain to be the natural home for many of the subscribers to this newsletter. Check out section 4 for more information on the association and for details some of the other people involved. All very exciting!

The final bit of news is that starting next year I will be running in-depth courses with limited numbers for those who really want to get to grips with the details of my approach to pragmatic karate. The first of these courses will start in January 2011, and this one will cover karate grappling (see section 6). There will only be 20 places available so please contact me if this is possibly of interest as I’ll be finalising names over the next few weeks.

Well that’s all for this introduction! Please check out the contents list below and see what is of interest to you!

Enjoy!

All the best,

Iain

1 - Knowledge is NOT Power! (New Podcast)

Knoweldge in NOT PowerHere is the latest podcast! It’s been a little while since the last one due to all the time being spent on getting the new website up and running. We are back on track now though and I have a few podcasts ready to record and roll out as we go.

This latest podcast is called “Knowledge is NOT Power!” and it discusses various issues surrounding “knowledge” and how “knowing” a technique is a long way away from being able to apply that technique. We also compare “theoretical knowledge” vs. “practical knowledge” and “experiential knowledge” vs. “non-experiential knowledge”. Finally I give my formula for power and the basic training cycle needed to ensure combative function.

This new podcast also includes some news and a new section where I do my best to answer questions from listeners. In this podcast we cover whether the changes to karate initiated in Japan were beneficial or detrimental to karate and what art I’d like to formally study but have not yet done so.

The new website means we don’t have to compress the file so you should also notice an increase in sound quality. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with more soon!

Please follow the link to download the podcast or to listen to it online:

http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/knowledge-not-power-podcast

Note: The voting and counter on the website's media player are not yet active (will be soon). The download link can be found under the player.

2 - Basic Pinan Shodan / Heian Nidan Flow drill (online video)

Seeing as the new website has good media functions, I’d better start making regular use of them! So here is the first of many exclusive video clips that I intend to regularly add to the website. Some videos will be specially filmed for the website and others, like this one, will be footage that was not intended for the site, but nevertheless should be of interest.

In July of this year Nicolas Hofele (uke) and Georg Keim (camera) from Germany came to the UK to spend a week privately training with me. During the week they took a lot of video footage to help them recall all the things we covered and they kindly agreed to my posting some of it on this site.

This clip covers a drill using the opening three moves from Pinan Shodan / Heian Nidan combined with the shuto-ukes that follow later in the kata. Those who have studied the “The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System” DVDs will recognise the drill shown here as a variation and combination of the first and second drills shown on volume one. If you are not familiar with those drills, this video may be a little hard to follow. Hopefully, you’ll get the general idea though and find the video of interest.

I hope you enjoy the video and I’ll be back with more videos and drills soon!

(Six well known martial artists drink beer & chat)

Regular visitors will recall that at the USA side of the X-Po event earlier this year Kris Wilder, Rory Miller, Marc “Animal” MacYoung, Al Peasland, Nicholas Yang & myself had a good chat about all things martial at Kris’s place … and we recorded it!

The first part of this recording has been uploaded to You-Tube and is now available for your listening pleasure. I hope you enjoy it and we’ll be sure to bring you all other episodes as they become available.

9 - New Iain Abernethy "Beyond Bunkai" DVD update

I recently received the final edit of the new “Beyond Bunkai” DVD! I am extremely happy with it and Harbour View Productions and Outpost Editing have done an amazing job!

The DVD provides detailed instruction on a non-scripted semi-live flow drill that utilises all the motions from Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan kata. It’s aimed at karateka who already have a solid appreciation of bunkai and now wish to practise in a more realistic and combative way that involves adapting to the enemy’s attempts to neutralise your attacks and ensuring you can make an effective escape.

The DVD covers all the various elements of the drill and includes numerous demonstrations of the drill done live. We also have a breakdown of the kata itself and a discussion on the history of Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan.

As soon as I receive the master disks, I’ll send the DVDs off for pressing and all going well the DVD will be ready before Christmas. I’ll be sure to keep you up to speed and please watch this space for news!
