Subject: Traditional Things I DO & Why!

Hi All,

I’ve just added a new video to YouTube! Traditional Things I DO & Why!

This is a follow-up video to the one called, “Traditional Things I Do NOT Do and Why” that was uploaded last week. In response to questions and feedback, this video looks at some misunderstandings that arose and explains why I still do the following traditional things:

1) Use Japanese Terminology
2) Wear a Gi
3) Use the Kyu-Dan Grading System and Belts

You can view it on YouTube or my website:

Everything is assessed on the basis of its utility in contributing towards the goals we have set for ourselves. If it helps, then we do it. If it doesn’t help, then we stop doing it. It does not have to be “all or nothing” approach.

It’s also worth noting that much of what is deemed “traditional” today is in fact relatively new. Things do change over time, and this includes cultural things too.

In addition to functional considerations, an entirely legitimate goal is personal enjoyment and interest. It’s therefore totally okay to include things purely on the basis of interest or enjoyment.

I think this is something that each individual group needs to consider for themselves. What works for me and mine, may well not work for you and yours. This is to be expected and as it should be. I hope you find the video interesting!

I’ve also added quite a few new videos to the app this week:

NEW VIDEO 1: Main Menu > Almost Live > Almost Live 2020 > Videos 1 to 10 > A hybrid of two of Funakoshis throws

NEW VIDEO 2: Main Menu > Almost Live > Almost Live 2020 > Videos 1 to 10 > Meikyo, Matsumora Rohai, Itosu Rohai Shodan!

NEW VIDEO 3: Main Menu > Kata Bunkai > Unsu > Unsu In-Depth > Part 5

WHERE TO FIND THE APP: Search the App Store or Play Store for “iain abernethy”.

NEED HELP JOINING? I appreciate that, like me, you may not be that clued up when it comes to technology. I also appreciate that all apps are different and hence it may not be obvious how to set up an account … so let me do that for you! All you need to do is send an email to app@iainabernethy.com with “New App Account” as the subject. I will then send you an invite with a username and pin that you can use to sign into the app.

NOTE: You will not be charged anything until you personally set up a subscription. The account I set up for you will simply allow you to sign in, explore a little (ONE WEEK AS MY GIFT!), and then set up a subscription should you chose to remain part of the community.

I hope you enjoy the new videos and I’ll be back with more soon!

All the best,

Iain
