Subject: Three Traditional Things I Do NOT Do and Why

Hi All,

Just a quick note to let you know I have added a new YouTube video today! The video covers three “traditional” things we don’t do and explains why we don’t do them. In my dojo we have long since stopped:

1) Using Japanese titles i.e. “Sensei”, etc.

2) Employing formal Japanese etiquette (beyond a simple bow).

3) Lining up by rank when training kihon, etc.

As is made clear in the video, I’m not saying everyone should follow suit, as it could be that those things remain useful and relevant to other groups. However, we have certainly found ditching those things to be very beneficial. I hope you find the video interesting, irrespective of your own personal choices around these issues.

You can view the video here: https://youtu.be/5EJTtkrvCrI

It’s also on the website too:

As app users will know, this video has been in the app for a couple of months.

App users will also be aware of the “Unsu In-Depth” series (one of many such series) we are currently running. Episode 4 will be added this week! If you are not an app subscriber, please search the App Store or Play Store for “iain abernethy”.

You may also be interested to know that ALL THREE volumes of the KARATE THROWING series are able to view in the app. The first volume is available as a DVD and download, but the only place you can currently view the other volumes is in the app.

NEED HELP JOINING? I appreciate that, like me, you may not be that clued up when it comes to technology. I also appreciate that all apps are different and hence it may not be obvious how to set up an account … so let me do that for you! All you need to do is send an email to app@iainabernethy.com with “New App Account” as the subject. I will then send you an invite with a username and pin that you can use to sign into the app.

NOTE: You will not be charged anything until you personally set up a subscription. The account I set up for you will simply allow you to sign in, explore a little (ONE WEEK AS MY GIFT!), and then set up a subscription should you chose to remain part of the community.

That’s all from me at the moment. I’ll be back with more soon!

All the best,

Iain
