Seishan / Hangestu Bunkai Video Clip

Hi All,

Bunkai Seishan HangetsuI'll be back in a couple of weeks with the February newsletter, but in the meantime I thought I'd send you this quick note to let you know a new video has been added to the website. It shows the bunkai to the end of Seishan / Hangestu kata and you you can view it on the blog: http://blog.iainabernethy.com/

The clip is taken from "Bunkai-Jutsu 4: Seishan / Hangetsu". As most of you will know, for the last few months we have been making our titles available as downloadable files in addition to DVDs. The download format has proved popular and the majority of our DVDs have now been converted. “Bunkai-Jutsu 4: Seishan / Hangetsu” and “Bunkai-Jutsu 5: Chinto / Gankaku” were uploaded last week!

During the conversion process we also arranged for a little clip to be edited together for the blog. If you click on the picture or follow the link below you will be able to watch a four minute clip that explains the bunkai for the “crescent kick” and “groin kick defence” found at the end of Seishan / Hangetsu. As you’ll see, it is my view that the end motion represents a leg kick-takedown followed by a strike to your felled enemy; and the action to be taken should the downed enemy try to tackle you to the floor. I hope you enjoy the clip!

I've also copied details of the new downloads below along with some other bits of news in case you missed them.

See you in a couple of weeks!

All the best,

Iain

New DVD Downloads: Bunkai-Jutsu 4 & 5

Over the last few months we have made a number of our DVDs available as digital downloads. Last week we added two of our most popular programmes. The downloads are £10 cheaper than the DVDs and there is obviously no postal costs too (we can’t make them any cheaper because – although downloads save the cost of producing the physical DVD – we still need to recoup the costs of filming and editing the actual programmes).

Download Details:
The downloads are Quicktime files. QuickTime is a very popular video format and the majority of computers (both Macs and PCs) have the required player installed. In the unlikely event that your computer does not already have the required software, QuickTime player can be downloaded for free from www.apple.com

How It Works: After your payment has been processed you will be directed to a webpage that gives you your unique download link (also sent to you via email). This link will remain active for 48 hours. Simply download the file during that time.

Download Advantages: Cheaper than DVD - No shipping costs - No waiting for the title to be delivered by post.

DVD Advantages: Higher picture quality - Interactive menus and bonus features - You can watch DVDs on TVs in addition to computers.

Details of the two new downloads are copied below:

Bunkai-Jutsu: Practical Kata Applications Volume 4 - Seishan / Hangetsu (Download)
Bunkai Jutsu 4
Bunkai-Jutsu is the analysis of the karate katas (forms) and their application in real combat. The fighting applications of the katas is one of the most fascinating and sadly misunderstood aspects of karate practice.

Volume 4 covers the applications of the kata known as Seishan (thirteen) or Hangetsu (half-moon). This kata is one of the oldest still in existence and it is widely practised. Bushi Matsumura - a great karate master who was also the chief bodyguard to three Okinawan kings - is said to be the one who introduced this kata from China to Okinawa. This download examines the wide range of close-range fighting techniques recorded within Seishan / Hangetsu.

Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + No Shipping Costs)

Bunkai-Jutsu: Practical Kata Applications Volume 5 - Chinto / Gankaku (Download)
Bunkai Jutsu 5
Bunkai-Jutsu is the analysis of the karate katas (forms) and their application in real combat. The fighting applications of the katas is one of the most fascinating and sadly misunderstood aspects of karate practice.

Volume 5 covers the applications of Chinto / Gankaku kata. The kata is named after a Chinese martial artist and sailor who became shipwrecked on Okinawa during the 1800s. Chinto eventually taught his fighting methods to Bushi Matsumura: a legendary karate master and the chief bodyguard to three Okinawan kings. It is Matsumura who is credited with creating this kata to record Chinto's fighting methods. This kata is also widely known as Gankaku (crane on a rock) in reference to some of the distinctive postures the kata contains. This download examines the wide-range of close-range strikes, locks, throws, strangles, chokes, cranks and escapes recorded within Chinto / Gankaku.

Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + No Shipping Costs)

Important Notes for Downloads: It is strongly recommended that all customers purchasing downloads have a good quality broadband internet connection due to the large file size. Whilst we have done all we can to minimize file size, even with a broadband internet connection, downloads may take a little while and patience is required.

You must also ensure that your computer has sufficient RAM to play a file of this size prior to purchase. Insufficient RAM will result in the download stalling and freezing during playback. Such playback difficulties are not the fault of the download, but the limitations of the computer in question.

No refunds can be given for downloads once the download link has been sent.

All downloads contain anti-piracy warnings and anti-piracy features. Your purchase of this of a download is taken as a guarantee that you understand unauthorised distribution of your download is a crime for which you can be personally prosecuted.

History: A Thing Of the Past? (New Podcast)

History: A Thing of the Past? From the newsletter send on Jan 1st:

Happy 2010 everyone! Is it just me or have the 10 years since the millennium flown by!? The passage of time is what inspired this first podcast of the new decade. In it I discuss the influence “history” can have on today’s martial practise. It is my view that history can lead to ever increasing efficiency and growth, or stagnation and death depending upon how we view the martial practises passed on to us through history.

There are many different ways in which history can impact upon us and in this podcast I discuss the following: How important is it to be “historically accurate” with regards to kata bunkai? What is “traditional”? Should we faithfully preserve what has been passed on to us? How can we integrate modern developments and remain true to our martial heritage? How should we use “history” to ensure a positive future? Is the “historic way” or the “modern way” the best? And a few more issues relating to the positives and pitfalls when looking at the history of the martial arts.

Thanks once again to all the regular listeners for your support of these podcasts! The number of listeners is growing all the time and I thank you for your continued support and for telling others about these programmes. I’ll be back with more next month! Enjoy!

“Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar!

I am pleased to invite you to “Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar day on Sunday 28th February 2010 at Bristol Dojo. 11am-5pm

Combat does not adhere to any given style or martial discipline, whilst techniques may look very different on the surface; they often share the same core principles. Whether you’re standing and striking or grappling on the ground the same principles can be used, the only thing that changes is how they are applied.

“Reality Check” brings two of the most sought after UK seminar instructors together for the first time on one course covering the complete combat subject of Stand-up and Ground fighting principles:-

Iain Abernethy – 5th Dan Karate Jutsu. One of the UK’s leading exponents of applied combat, Iain has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the practical application of traditional martial arts and is well known for his work on the pragmatic use of the techniques and concepts. At Reality Check Iain will be covering striking principles from the standing position. www.iainabernethy.com

Kevin O’Hagan – 7th Dan Combat Jujutsu. Kevin has taught successfully on the UK seminar circuit for many years and is held in high regard for not only his dynamic techniques and high level of fitness, but also for his down to earth realistic teaching. Kevin has written 5 books to date on Martial Arts. He has appeared on radio and TV promoting his art and as a Self Defence Specialist and he has written for fighters magazine regularly for 8 years. His TV credits include "Muscle" a documentary following a team of Bristol Door Security shown on BBC1 and most recently he appeared on a Sky 1 TV show "Britain’s Hardest." Kevin will be teaching principles relating to ground fighting. www.kevinohagan.com

The seminar will take combat principles and show how they can be applied from a standing position with Iain and then how they can be applied on the ground with Kevin including all the throws, locks, chokes and strangles you would expect from these two gentlemen. This is an open seminar and anyone who trains in any martial art is welcome.

Whether you train Karate, Jujutsu, MMA, Thai Boxing, Tae Kwon Do or Judo, this course will help you learn common combat principles to help you develop in your chosen system. No formal training wear is required, wear what’s comfortable for you!

The cost of this full 6 hour seminar is just £30 per person and the remaining places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book your place please send payment made out to Bristol Dojo Ltd, to 14 Marjoram Way, Village Quarter. Portishead. BS20 7JF. Details on the venue can be found here www.bristoldojo.com

Previous years have been very well attended and great fun! The training will again take place at the hugely impressive Kendal Judo Centre (a 2012 Pre-Olympic Training Venue). It’s a beautiful part of the world and attendees may well want to make use of the fact it is a bank holiday weekend to take a little time to explore the natural beauty of the surrounding area.

Watch this space for more details!
