Subject: January 2010 - History: A Thing of the Past? New Podcast
January 2010 Newsletter - History: A thing of the past?
Hi All,
Welcome
to the first newsletter of the new decade! I hope 2010 is good to you and
you have not put on too much “holiday weight”?
Lots to tell you about! The first things is that a new podcast called “History:
A Thing of the Past?” has been added to the website!
Seeing as we are 10 years into the “new” millennium I thought a discussion on
history would be appropriate! The podcast looks at a lot of the issues
surrounding the history of the martial arts and how “history” can be both a
positive and negative thing to modern day practise. See section 1 for more
details.
This newsletter also has some things especially for our Italian, German and
Spanish members. In section 7 you can read a German translation of my article on
Itosu’s 10 precepts (including a full translation of those precepts)! In section
9 you can find details of how you can download an Italian translation of my “An
Introduction to Applied Karate” e-book! And in section 19 you can find details
of a whole host of my articles in Spanish!
We also have details of the “Extreme Impact” downloads and a host of links to
good information and training opportunities. John Skillen’s new book (section 5)
is particularly fantastic and kept me firmly engrossed over the holiday period!
I’m also back on the road shortly and look forward to seeing you all at the
first seminar of the decade on the 17th of January in the midlands! Details of
all the upcoming seminars for the first half of the year can be found in section
11. I’ll be teaching in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Germany in the
next few months and I look forward to seeing you all soon!
Enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with more in a few weeks time!
All the best,
Iain
PS Be sure to check out Geoff Thompson’s Christmas podcast! My mum and I played
a part in the mayhem and hilarity and I think it will give you all a good
giggle:

1 - History: A Thing Of the Past? (New Podcast)
Happy
2010 everyone! Is it just me or have the 10 years since the millennium flown
by!? The passage of time is what inspired this first podcast of the new decade.
In it I discuss the influence “history” can have on today’s martial practise. It
is my view that history can lead to ever increasing efficiency and growth, or
stagnation and death depending upon how we view the martial practises passed on
to us through history.
There are many different ways in which history can impact upon us and in this
podcast I discuss the following: How important is it to be “historically
accurate” with regards to kata bunkai? What is “traditional”? Should we
faithfully preserve what has been passed on to us? How can we integrate modern
developments and remain true to our martial heritage? How should we use
“history” to ensure a positive future? Is the “historic way” or the “modern way”
the best? And a few more issues relating to the positives and pitfalls when
looking at the history of the martial arts.
Thanks once again to all the regular listeners for your support of these
podcasts! The number of listeners is growing all the time and I thank you for
your continued support and for telling others about these programmes. I’ll be
back with more next month! Enjoy!

4 - Extreme Impact with Iain Abernethy & Steve Williams
Coming very soon!
"I
fall to the floor. I’m breathing so hard that my lungs feel like they are about
to burst. I look down at my broken body. I can hear nothing but the sound of my
pounding heart. I have a splitting headache as my brain screams for oxygen. My
muscles are so exhausted that my body can no longer move. So it doesn’t.
Mentally and physically I have nothing left. This is hell. And then it starts;
like it always does: “Get up! Get a grip of yourself and get on your feet!” The
inner voice. My will. My sprit. It’s the one thing that will never lie down and
die. So I get to my feet and I do it all again. This is how I train. This is
INTENSITY."
In recent newsletters I've been telling you all about the project that Steve Williams and I have been working on called "Extreme Impact". There has been a lot of interest in this project and the good news is that the downloads should be available in the next couple of weeks!
Extreme Impact is a training system that reflects the drills that myself and Steve use to develop power, technique, anaerobic fitness, speed and explosiveness. We recently filmed five units which cover drills to develop all aspects of the following techniques:
-
Extreme Impact Unit 1 - Developing a Knockout Jab!
-
Extreme Impact Unit 2 - The Cross: The Ultimate Knockout Shot!
-
Extreme Impact Unit 3 - Roundhouse: The King of Kicks!
-
Extreme Impact Unit 4 - Front and Side Kicks: Straight Down the Line!
-
Extreme Impact Unit 5 - Strength & Plyometric Drills: Not for the Fainthearted!
One Important Note: EVERYTHING you see on these downloads was recorded live and no camera tricks were used! We give you our word that on all of the live demonstrations nothing was speeded up, no sound effects were added, and neither of us are "hamming things up" for the camera. The speed and impact is 100% genuine and martial artists were harmed in the filming of these programmes ;-)
5 - Extra Chilli Sauce - Great new book by John Skillen!
Extra
Chilli Sauce - A dark tale of violence, retribution and success by John Skillen
£11.99
- Pages: 200 - imprint: Pegasus - ISBN: 9781903490402
John Skillen's long awaited, true-life account of a youth torn apart by violent
behaviour is brutally honest. His life as a teenager swathed in bloodshed, and
the consequences from the carnage that he created, and of that lawless rebellion
that followed him wherever he turned, is about to be told. Those who have
eagerly waited to hear this story will soon have their patience rewarded.
Extra Chilli Sauce us a true story of a young man growing up around youth
violence when hooliganism was seen as a fashion extra and a time that brought
nothing but harmful and depressing consequences. It is the story of one man's
fight against his own violent tendencies that saw bloody brawls between a bunch
of hooligans, riots, blood-splattered match fights and tales of prison life.
John Skillen eventually caught a glimpse of the error of his ways, enough was
enough. He decided to leave his past and create a future full of positive
outcomes. On his final release from prison, John shaped that change in his life
- a life that now sees him encouraging those whose path he not only walked, but
a path he helped lay
"I
couldn't stop myself. I continually booted and stamped on his face. Years of
frustration were in every stamp. I had to make sure he didn't get up. His head
fell to one side, arms motionless beside him, his body now still. I stared at
him through narrowed eyes and balled fists, hatred burning through my veins...
John Skillen is an aggressive nineteen year old with a criminal record who
attracts violent confrontation wherever he goes. His life is one brutal fight
after another. How did he break this cycle of violence? How did he overcome his
prison record and obtain employment? How did he use his toughness and ability to
win fights to provide a benefit to society? This is the fascinating story of
this transformation from being a victim driven by violence to a life where he is
in control of his destiny."
Extra Chilli Sauce: A tale of violence, retribution and success is John
Skillen's autobiography, a vivid account of his life from the toughest origins.
Author Information: John Skillen is a multifaceted Martial Artist and reality
borne Self Protection expert. He holds black belts in several disciplines,
including Kung Fu, Kickboxing and Judo. John is a fully qualified amateur boxing
coach and a former national Judo champion. John spent over twenty years working
as a nightclub bouncer and is a trained bodyguard. John is an international Self
Defence instructor.
John weaves his writing around his family life and his own Martial Arts &
Fitness Centre. This is John's first book.

7 - Itosu's 10 Precepts (German Translation)
Here is a German Language version of my article on
Itosu’s 10 Precepts (http://www.iainabernethy.com/articles/Itosu_10_Precepts.asp).
Thanks to Axel Siebert and his colleagues for doing this.
http://www.kata-bunkai.de/html/die_10_grundsatze_von_anku_ito.html
Die 10 Grundsätze von
Anku Itosu
sofort an weiße

8 - The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System DVDs Review
Review
of The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vols 1 & 2 by Goran
Powell:
All of Iain Abernethy’s DVDs come highly recommended and these two are no
exception. Iain shows a series of pragmatic two-person drills that will be of
special relevance to those practising the Pinan/Heian kata, though useful to
everyone seeking realistic fighting applications from kata.
What Iain does so well is build a logical progression in the drills. They begin
by developing fundamental skills: clearing the guard, taking a position of
advantage and striking — first with the fist, then with the open hand. Later
drills progress to throws and takedowns, locks, cranks and strangles.
The drills never rely on contrived movements on the part of your partner. These
are all highly workable techniques, simple to learn quickly and develop as a
reflex action. Any (or all) of them would make a great addition to the syllabus
of a club wishing to achieve a new level of pragmatism in its training.
With insightful explanations along the way, you get the feeling that Iain really
has understood the intentions of the kata’s creator, Itosu, and brought the
master’s fighting system to life.
Interestingly, with the emphasis on close-quarter work, some of the early drills
have a ‘Chinese’ flavour to them, reminiscent (though not the same as) Wing Chun
style drills — perhaps a hint that when Itosu created the Pinans, karate was not
as far removed from Chinese arts as it has now become.
Mr Abernethy has delivered yet again. These two DVDs come strongly recommended
for all karateka, not just students of the Pinan/Heian series.

10 - The Martial Arts Show: May 2010
Martial
Arts Comes Back to The Midlands!
Following the cancellation in 2009 of what used to be the UK's only annual
martial arts show, a spark of genuine enthusiasm (to see a return to the
Midlands of a Martial Arts Showcase) has rapidly grown into a raging desire to
stage the best ever Martial Arts Show, the UK has ever witnessed!
So much so, that on the 22nd and 23rd of May, 2010 Paul Clifton (The Publisher
of: COMBAT, FIGHTERS, TRADITIONAL KARATE & TAEKWONDO & KOREAN martial arts
magazines), Kwoklyn Wan & Adam Jeffery (The Promoters of The Martial Arts
Festival UK) have joined forces and entered into partnership to stage THE
MARTIAL ARTS SHOW 2010 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham.
Combining the abilities of the trio, will result in the staging of a truly
massive annual martial arts event showcase! One that will undoubtedly be a huge
success as well as a phenomenal event, due in no small way to the motive of
wanting to go back to the days when the overall atmosphere was one of enjoyment
and fun! The event, called The Martial Arts Show will take place over the
weekend of May the 22nd & 23rd 2010 and is expected to attract an audience of
30,000 plus!
Kwoklyn Wan said, “It's a partnership made in heaven. With the combined
experience of Paul, his four magazines, his many years in the very specialist
field of martial arts publishing. Together with his considerable experience of
staging huge events, the world of martial arts is set to have a fantastic boost
in 2010”.
Paul Clifton said, “I cannot begin to explain how exciting THE MARTIAL ARTS SHOW
is going to be. Kwoklyn and Adam managed to present a fantastically successful
showcase in the form of their Martial Arts Festival UK, without any previous
experience! Now, with their combined understanding and massive enthusiasm, we
will all aim to present the BEST MARTIAL ARTS SHOW in the world!
One that is motivated by our joint and personal wish, to stage an event that
will deliver on many fronts. I am particularly excited as I feel that I have
found two people that share the same enthusiasm & passion to spread the word as
to the many benefits that martial arts has to offer, to EVERYONE without the
need to be primarily interested in the commercial aspect of staging such an
event!
To find out more you can visit the martial arts show web site at
www.themartialartsshow.com or
pick up a copy of COMBAT or FIGHTERS magazines from any WHSmith store or any
good newsagents.
It doesn't matter if you have never done martial arts before or if you are a
seasoned practitioner, there will be something there for you!
With 12 interactive areas and ALL of the martial arts World’s leading companies
present to show you their products and services, you will be able to witness
everything from the unbelievable to the truly fascinating – up close and
personal. All from the magical world of martial arts, under one HUGE roof, over
two exciting and very “Full On” days, from 10am to 5pm.

12 - “Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar!
I am pleased to invite you to “Reality Check 2010”
– Striking & Grappling seminar day on Sunday 28th February 2010 at Bristol Dojo.
11am-5pm
Combat does not adhere to any given style or martial discipline, whilst
techniques may look very different on the surface; they often share the same
core principles. Whether you’re standing and striking or grappling on the ground
the same principles can be used, the only thing that changes is how they are
applied.
“Reality Check” brings two of the most sought after UK seminar instructors
together for the first time on one course covering the complete combat subject
of Stand-up and Ground fighting principles:-
Iain Abernethy – 5th Dan Karate Jutsu. One of the UK’s leading exponents of
applied combat, Iain has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the
practical application of traditional martial arts and is well known for his work
on the pragmatic use of the techniques and concepts. At Reality Check Iain will
be covering striking principles from the standing position.
www.iainabernethy.com
Kevin O’Hagan – 7th Dan Combat Jujutsu. Kevin has taught successfully on the UK
seminar circuit for many years and is held in high regard for not only his
dynamic techniques and high level of fitness, but also for his down to earth
realistic teaching. Kevin has written 5 books to date on Martial Arts. He has
appeared on radio and TV promoting his art and as a Self Defence Specialist and
he has written for fighters magazine regularly for 8 years. His TV credits
include "Muscle" a documentary following a team of Bristol Door Security shown
on BBC1 and most recently he appeared on a Sky 1 TV show "Britain’s Hardest."
Kevin will be teaching principles relating to ground fighting.
www.kevinohagan.com
The seminar will take combat principles and show how they can be applied from a
standing position with Iain and then how they can be applied on the ground with
Kevin including all the throws, locks, chokes and strangles you would expect
from these two gentlemen. This is an open seminar and anyone who trains in any
martial art is welcome.
Whether you train Karate, Jujutsu, MMA, Thai Boxing, Tae Kwon Do or Judo, this
course will help you learn common combat principles to help you develop in your
chosen system. No formal training wear is required, wear what’s comfortable for
you!
The cost of this full 6 hour seminar is just £30 per person and the remaining
places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book your place
please send payment made out to Bristol Dojo Ltd, to 14 Marjoram Way, Village
Quarter. Portishead. BS20 7JF. Details on the venue can be found here

Matty
Evans and Tony Somers both 5th Dans with the BCA have launched The Real Combat
System. www.realcombatsystem.co.uk
This system is largely based around the teachings of the legendary Geoff
Thompson. All of the techniques have been pressure tested in the reality arena.
The aim of our teaching is to help you to grow and develop, physically,
psychologically and spiritually. Through this syllabus we aim to take you on a
journey of self-development that will eventually lead you to where ever you want
to go.
It is our aim to teach you the best self-protection techniques that are around
today. We will do this in a safe and friendly environment. You will make life
long friends. You will learn the art of fighting with out fighting. We also
believe that although martial arts is the vehicle the real journey takes place
in the mind and as such we will help you to develop a strong and un breakable
