June 2010 Newsletter:
New Podcast, New Articles, and Iain at UK / USA Not-To-Be-Missed X-Po!
Hi All,
Welcome
to June’s newsletter! This month we have a new podcast on “The Black Belt and
the Grading System”, a new article by myself (based on a previous podcast)
called, “History: is it a thing of the past?", and another new article by Steve
Williams entitled, “It’s not what you do” (See contents list below for details).
We also have more details on the USA / UK “Crossing the Pond X-Po” including a
new online video by Nicholas Yang (who will be teaching Chinese Long Fist and
White Crane at both events). These events are going to be huge and you can find
more details in section 2!
One other key bit of news is that Iain Abernethy.com is about to undergo a major
upgrade! The new and improved website will have greatly increased functionality
and you can find some more information in section 3. Everything that we already
do will continue, but we’ll be able to bring you a whole lot more besides! The
new site should be live in the next couple of weeks and we’ll be sure to let you
know as soon as it is.
Once the website is updated we’ll have everything in place for SATMA (The
Society of Applied Traditional Martial Arts) so keep an eye on upcoming
newsletters for the final push to the society going live!
Later this year I’ll be starting to work with a small group of existing dan
grades with a view to them gaining a dan grade in my personal approach to
karate. This is only open to those who have worked with me closely via the
seminars etc for an extended period. I pretty sure I’ve contacted all those who
would be eligible, but if I have overlooked anyone (apologies!) please contact
me as soon as possible. I have a final list of 10 people and I’m not really
looking for anyone else, but seeing as this will be a one off, I just want to be
100% sure I’ve not overlooked anyone. Let me know if you think I have.
The final thing I’d like to do in this introduction is thank everyone who
supported the recent set of Canadian Seminars! I can’t thank you all enough for
your hospitality, enthusiasm and good company! As with previous visits, I
enjoyed myself greatly and was very impressed with how much material we covered.
Thank you all once again!
Speak soon!
All the best,
Iain

1 - New Podcast: Black Belt and the Grading System
In
this month’s podcast we discuss the always controversial subject of the grading
system and the coveted black belt. On internet forums, message boards, and in
the letters pages in the martial arts magazines we frequently find discussion on
how standards are falling, the black belt does not mean what it once did and
that there is no uniform standard anymore. So in this podcast I’d like to give
my take on the black belt and the plusses and pitfalls associated with the
grading system in general.
I cover the origins of the black belt; how the grading system can encourage the
pursuit of things that have no bearing on combative function; how the grading
system can both encourage and discourage the inappropriate rise of ego; what
could happen if we got rid of the grading system; the lack of standardisation in
grading criteria (which I think is a good thing); what grades are legitimate;
and many more of the issues surrounding the grading system.
This podcast also has a little bit of information on some of the exciting
changes that will be coming to iainabernethy.com in the next few weeks! I hope
that you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with a new one next month!
Note: The picture associated with this podcast is
drawn by Lauren Fast and is of myself strangling Scott Knowles (the “official
uke” of my recent Canadian trip) using a technique from Pinan Yodan. I’ll share
high resolution versions of these with you in coming weeks, because they are
amazing works of art! Thanks to James Freeman for arranging these pictures, to
Lauren for drawing them … and to Scott for being happily strangled for a
fortnight!

2 - "Crossing the Pond!": USA / UK not to be missed training opportunity!
Last
newsletter I told you about an amazing training opportunity in August for those
on either side of the Atlantic! The European event has people travelling from as
far away as Spain and Norway! The USA event also has people travelling from all
over the states! This truly is a not to be missed event.
The first event will take place in Seattle in the USA (14th and 15th of August) and the second event will take place a week later in Coventry in the UK (21st and 22nd of August).
This seminar is open to all adult martial artists
- regardless of background, style and level of ability - who wish to develop
competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination
of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and
presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by the
instructors - will be issued to all participants.
Nicholas Yang - Chinese Long
Fist and White Crane
Al Peasland - Real world self-protection
Iain Abernethy - Close-Range combat / Applications of kata
Marc “Animal” MacYoung - knife, gangs, guns and jail
Kris Wilder - Okinawan structure, power, and mind set
I’m thrilled to be able to meet up with members and visitors from the
USA as well having the opportunity to teach as part of such an amazing line up!
I have to say this is an amazing mix of the “traditional” and the “reality
based” (not that I see a difference between the two terms) and I’m sure serious
martial artists in both the UK and USA will be very keen to be part of this
history making event!

3 - New and Improved Website coming soon!
The whole
iainabernethy.com website is about to undergo a major update! There is quite a
bit of extra functionality that will be added to the website and I feel sure
regular visitors and users will greatly enjoy what we have in store.
The updated website will offer things the current website cannot (networking
facilities, good quality streamed video, exclusive content, greater interaction
with users etc). The changes are also needed to be able to provide the service I
want for SATMA. Everything we already have (podcasts, newsletters, forum,
articles, etc) will the there (in a new and improved way) and we'll have load
more besides.
The video facilities are something I am particularly looking forward to making
use of by brining you regular instructional video-casts.
One thing I think you'll also all like is that the forum, pod-casts, videos,
articles and the rest of the site will be accessible from a single search
function. This should make the site very easy to interrogate the website no
matter which martial aspect you are researching. The way the new site is
structured means we will be able to bring you new information on a more regular
basis too!
Work on the new improved site is well under way and I know people will be happy
with the improved service and functionality we'll have. All going well it will
be live in a couple of weeks and we’ll drop you all a note at that time!
4 - "It's Not What You Do" by Steve Williams (New Extreme Impact Article)
For as long
as I can remember there has always been discussion, arguments and even conflicts
regarding which of the arts and systems are the most effective. My opinion is
simply this…none of them and all of them!
It’s purely down to the individual. The theory of arts and systems are only
words on paper or thoughts in people’s minds and, to be perfectly honest, I’ve
never known anyone win a fight armed only with theory. The expression of arts
and systems are delivered by people; and that’s the practical side of them.
People have different abilities, genetics and commitment levels; so should this
reflect on the art and system, or should it reflect on the individual? I believe
it’s down to the individual; everything can be effective if it’s done right, and
it’s relevant to the environment that you are in.
I’ve met so many people over the years who have flitted from one style to the
next, then the next, always claiming that there are flaws in what they are
studying. The harsh reality is that more often than not the problem lies a
little closer to home. Sometimes we have to look inwards and analyze ourselves
and then the truth may come as a huge blow to our ego……ouch !!
Once you have come to terms with the fact that your art or system will only ever
be as good as you allow it to be, then you’re ready to look at the way you do
it.
Training is the way in which we develop. The problem is that there are so many
attributes that we need to develop to become better, it’s hard to know how to
train for the best. Developing technique, speed, power, dynamics, transitions,
movement and impact, to name but a few, is difficult to do. This is why the
training has to be hard and that’s where the mental strength comes in. If you
don’t accept anything that I am saying then that’s fine, opinions vary, but
please believe this…the stronger the mind, the stronger the body. Once an
individual has forged a mental resilience that will never give up; then you have
a warrior.
I like to consider myself as a hard trainer, if you do too, then keep checking
out the extreme impact material every month…..it’s not for the faint hearted.
Just remember, it’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it.
Enough said !!
About Steve Williams: Having trained since childhood, Steve has developed into a modern martial artist with a strong focus on dynamics and extreme impact. He is very experienced in the practical application of the martial arts having worked in violent environments for the last 15 years. Those who have trained with Steve pay testament to his extraordinary power, broken ribs through kick shields and torn tendons through focus mitts are further evidence of the extreme impact he delivers. 5 - Extreme Impact You-Tube Channel Update
Just
a quick update about the new Extreme Impact You-Tube Channel! Last newsletter I
told you that Steve Williams and I were going to be bringing you regular
training tips and drills via you-tube! The first few special drills have now
been filmed and are being edited together. As soon as they are live, you can be
sure that we will let you know! The idea is that
once a month (minimum) we’ll record some material that will show a drill to develop a particular martial attribute! The
channel has been set up and the new clips will be added in the not too distant
future!
http://www.youtube.com/user/extremeimpactma
As I also mentioned last newsletter, Steve and I
have now also filmed another 5 Extreme Impact units! We covered Advanced Fitness
and Muscular Endurance Drills; Angled Knockouts: Hooks and Uppercuts; Confusion
Drills; Footwork – Dynamic Striking on the move; and Bag Drills – Training
Alone! (the bag work drills being a favourite of mine).
They are now on their final edits and we hope to have them available in a few
weeks time! Thanks to everyone who has purchased the first five units as 100% of
the money generated has gone into the production of units 6 to 10. Making such
programmes is expensive and very time consuming and we could not have done it
without your support.
We've also had lots of requests relating to the
Extreme Impact T-Shirts worn by Steve and I in the filming. Well the good news
is that we have got a firm to produce the shirt and we'll also let you know
about that in future newsletters.
The final part of Extreme Impact news is an update on the articles that Steve
will be brining you in future months ... well, the first one can be found above!
All the best,
Iain

6 - History: Is it a thing of the past? (New Article by Iain Abernethy)
Is an understanding of the history of karate
important? Or is it an irrelevant distraction from the pursuit of combative
efficiency? Perhaps it can be both? As I see it “history” can be a force for
either progress or stagnation and in this article I would like to talk about a
number of issues relating to karate’s history and how that may effect our
approach to the art today.
Those who are familiar with my previous articles will know that I draw a distinction between “pragmatists” and “historians”. An historian would be someone who is interested in how the martial arts were practised in the past. Historical accuracy would be their primary concern. Conversely, a pragmatist is someone who wants to make the martial arts as efficient as possible in today’s world. Combative effectiveness would be their primary concern. Although I find the history of the martial arts to be of great importance, I would nevertheless class myself as a pragmatist as I always place combative efficacy above adherence to the practises of history.
My personal identification as a pragmatist may surprise some due to the heavy emphasis I place on traditional kata. However, kata is part of my practise precisely because it serves my aims as a pragmatist. I don’t practise kata for historical interest or to “remain true to tradition”. I practise kata and bunkai because of my interest in their combative application.
When we begin our martial practise we are taught the system of our teachers. As time passes, we should begin to discriminate and decide what aspects of that teaching we wish to keep as is, reinterpret, and which aspect we will totally drop. This is the “shuhari” process and I talked about that process in greater detail in other articles and podcasts.
As part of my own martial development, there are practises that I have dropped. For example, in my dojo we do no one-step, three-step or five-step sparring. It matters little to me that these were practises passed onto me. It also matters little to me that that such practises could be considered “traditional” (although I would personally dispute that definition) or of historical importance. It is my experience that such practises do not lead to combative efficiency – indeed they get in the way of it by introducing many falsehoods – and hence I have not kept them as part of my practise.
I can assure you that had I found kata and bunkai (kata application) to be of little combative value, I would also have dropped it without hesitation. I also fully support those people who have not found value in kata and have hence dropped it from their practise. However, it has been my personal experience that kata has had a lot to offer and hence it is central to what I do. I’ll reiterate that kata is central to what I do, not because it is “historical” or “traditional”, but because it has proven valuable to me and my students for its combative value ....

7 - The Little Bubishi by Andy O'Brien
THE LITTLE
BUBISHI: A HISTORY OF KARATE FOR CHILDREN
Finally a book about karate for children! Of its millions of devotees throughout
the world, most karate practitioners are young people. This timely book explains
the art very simply, providing a greater understanding of the true meaning and
nature of Karate-Do.
The Little Bubishi tells the amazing tales of karate’s legendary masters in an
entertaining way. The legends of Karate-Do are brought to life in a series of
stories that relate the heroics and steely determination that embody karate
history. The peaceful philosophies behind this popular martial art are often
overlooked, while its graphic fighting forms get all the attention.

simply encourage you to head to the biography page of his website (WWW.CLUBBCHIMERA.COM).
CCMA were commissioned to teach self-protection to the Law Society and
Solicitors Regulation Authority. This was a great success indicating a 100%

10 - Iain Abernethy Seminars 2010!
Below you can find details of my upcoming open seminars! I look forward to seeing you at the next event in your part of the world!
As you can see 2010 is now fully booked and dates for 2011 are already been taken. This year I have dropped the number of dates available for seminars by around one-third. Next year I intend to drop the number of available dates still further because, as much as I enjoy the seminars, there is now simply too much demand for me to meet and I need the time to do other things. I really do hate to disappoint people, so if you do want me to visit you in 2011, you need to be thinking about that sooner rather than later.
Please don't hesitate to contact me (iain@iainabernethy.com) should you have any questions on any of the upcoming events below!
