They have been a year in the making, but the good news is that the new DVDs are now available! Over 2000 bright and shiny DVDs were delivered to us yesterday. After all the work, effort and expense, it is great to finally see the DVDs themselves!
This two DVD series gives a detailed breakdown of the specific two-man drills that I teach for the Pinan / Heian series of kata. The related blurbs and cover pictures can be seen below.
Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. The drills cover striking, breaking balance, controlling limbs, takedowns, a variety of locks and cranks, grappling, throws, chokes, etc.
The DVDs also include demonstrations of the kata themselves (slow and normal speed), a discussion of the background and history of the Pinan / Heian series, and instruction on the vitally important four stages of kata training. In addition to the drills for the entire kata series, volume 2 also includes a series of extra drills to demonstrate how the lessons taught by the entire kata series can be developed, varied and progressed.
I have taught these drills for years in my own dojo and at my seminars, but this is the first time the entire set has been presented on DVD. It is my hope that you will find the drills useful and enjoyable, and that you will make use of these drills in your own training and teaching.

On Sunday the 18th of October 2009 I'll be one of four instructors teaching at the Premier Karate Course. The others are Sensei Wayne Otto O.B.E (Uechi Ryu / 9 times World champion), Terry Pottage 8th Dan (Shito Ryu / Shuko kai) and Tony Christian 8th Dan (Goju Ryu). On the 21st of November, I'll be teaching an open seminar hosted by Halifax Jissen Karate-Do. This seminar will focus on the creation of two-person kata and bunkai drills.
