1 – He's Back!: Richard Barnes Interviews Iain Abernethy (New Podcast)

Richard Barnes & Jamie ClubbRichard Barnes is back! Those of you who have been following the podcasts from the very beginning will remember that the first podcast featured an interview with myself conducted by Richard Barnes. Over 80,000 podcast downloads later and Richard is back!

In this light-hearted podcast Richard and I discuss my own personal journey through the martial arts; from my very first class to the current day. We also discuss the purpose of kata, the rise of the “McDojo”, the realities of self-protection, the future for karate, my current training, and a number of important martial topics.

Regular listeners to the www.GeoffThompson.com podcast will also be treated to numerous “in-jokes” and an update on the unnatural urges that afflict Richard’s dog! I had a lot of fun recording this podcast, and despite all the joking around and generally silliness, I think we managed to fit some interesting discussions on the martial arts in there too!

I hope you have as much fun listening to this podcast as we had recording it! Thanks to everyone for the continued and enthusiastic support of the podcasts and I’ll be back soon with more.

2 - Naihanchi / Tekki Bunkai Online Video

Iain and James in CanadaThe Abernethys were recently visited by James Freeman and his family. James was the organiser of my trips to Canada in 2007 and 2008. The picture to the right is of James and me in Canada in 2008, just after some waterfall training / photos (you can see of the waterfall in the background).

When James visited the UK for a family holiday last month we met up to do some training. James has a lot of experience of bunkai and hence we concentrated on more advanced combinations from Naihanchi (specifically the Wado version). This included some combinations taken directly from the kata, but mainly we worked on taking individual methods from the kata and recombining them in different ways (i.e. Stage 3 practise for those familiar with my 4 stage approach).

The day before James was due to travel to another part of the UK his wife filmed a very quick summary of some of the material we covered with my mobile phone. It was intended simply as an aid to memory for James, but the video quality of my mobile is better than we thought. It’s not great, but the footage is certainly viewable. Anyhow, James and I thought you may enjoy watching the clip too. As I say, it was not filmed with public viewing in mind, so it may be a little difficult to follow in places. Regardless, I hope that you enjoy it and can draw some useful information from it.

3 - New DVD Downloads

Over the last couple of month's we made a number of our DVDs available as digital downloads:

Kata-Based-Sparring

Masters' Seminar

Karate's Joint-Locks 1

Karate's Joint-Locks 2

Karate's Joint-Locks 3

Applied Karate 1

Applied Karate 2 (NEW!)

Applied Karate 3 (NEW!)

Karate's Grappling Methods 1 (NEW!)

Karate's Grappling Methods 2 (NEW!)

These downloads have proved very popular and, as you can see from the list above,  we've converted four more of the DVDs to download format (see below for details). The support for the downloads has been very strong and, although it may take a while, we will be making almost all of our DVDs available in download format. The seminar DVDs are being done now, and the Bunkai-Jutsu series will follow. It may take a few months, but we will get there. Thanks to everyone for their enthusiastic support of this format.

The downloads are £10 cheaper than the DVDs and there is obviously no postal costs too (we can’t make them any cheaper because – although downloads save the cost of producing the physical DVD – we still need to recoup the costs of filming and editing the actual programmes). Around £14,000 to go and we will have broken even! ;-)

Download Details:
The downloads are Quicktime files. QuickTime is a very popular video format and the majority of computers (both Macs and PCs) have the required player installed. In the unlikely event that your computer does not already have the required software, QuickTime player can be downloaded for free from www.apple.com.

How It Works: After your payment has been processed you will be directed to a webpage that gives you your unique download link (also sent to you via email). This link will remain active for 48 hours. Simply download the file during that time.

Download Advantages: Cheaper than DVD - No shipping costs - No waiting for the title to be delivered by post.

DVD Advantages: Higher picture quality - Interactive menus and bonus features - You can watch DVDs on TVs in addition to computers.

Details of the four new downloads are copied below:

Applied Karate 2Applied Karate Volume 2: Kicking, Defending, and the Real Use of 'Blocks' (Download)

Important Notes for Downloads: It is strongly recommended that all customers purchasing downloads have a good quality broadband internet connection due to the large file size. Whilst we have done all we can to minimize file size, even with a broadband internet connection, downloads may take a little while and patience is required.

You must also ensure that your computer has sufficient RAM to play a file of this size prior to purchase. Insufficient RAM will result in the download stalling and freezing during playback. Such playback difficulties are not the fault of the download, but the limitations of the computer in question.

No refunds can be given for downloads once the download link has been sent.

All downloads contain anti-piracy warnings and anti-piracy features. Your purchase of this of a download is taken as a guarantee that you understand unauthorised distribution of your download is a crime for which you can be personally prosecuted.

4 - Iain Abernethy in Australia in March 2010: Act Now!

Australian FlagThe flights have been booked and it is now 100% certain that I’ll be teaching a series of seminars in Australia in March next year! The first seminar will on Saturday the 20th of March. There are then seminars each day until Friday the 26th of March!

A PDF with a detailed breakdown on the locations, times and costs of each seminar will be avialble shortly. However, places on these seminars are limited and the initial feedback suggests the courses will fill up very quickly (people from as far a field as New Zealand are making the trip!). All interested parties are therefore strongly encouraged to contact the organiser as soon as possible. This includes all those people who have contacted Robert or me previously. Please drop Robert an email at robpres@Optusnet.com.au so that you will among the very first people to secure places for yourself and you colleges. Alternatively you can call Robert Auricchio on 0400 416 604 or (03) 9395 2126, or Phil Noble on 0403 165 308 or (03) 9749 3113

I’ve never visited Australia before and I am very excited to be able to make the trip and share my thoughts of the practical use of kata and applied karate with you all! Should be a fun week!

5 - Pinan / Heian Drills DVD Update

Regular subscribers to these newsletters will know that almost 1 year ago we filmed two new DVDs on the two-person drills that I teach for the Pinan / Heian series. I’d like to express my thanks to everyone for their patience. The great news is that those DVDs will be available very soon! We have received the master disks for both the PAL and NTSC versions from the production company and the DVDs will be going into production shortly. All going well these long awaited DVDs will be ready in time for the next newsletter!

I personally believe these DVDs to be best ones we have done to date.  I’m very happy with the information on the DVDs and the way that information has been presented. As I say, these DVDs will be available very soon and I’m looking forward to seeing what you all think of them! The blurbs for the DVDs are copied below:

The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vol. 1
Shodan, Nidan & Sandan

The Pinan /Heian kata series are without a doubt the world’s most widely practised kata series. As popular as these kata are, only a comparatively small number of karate practitioners are aware of the practical fighting techniques these kata were created to record.

This DVD series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of two-person drills that will enable karateka – of all styles and levels of experience – to return practical combat skills to the heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.

Volume 1 shows the two-person drills associated with the first three of the Pinan / Heian series (Shodan, Nidan and Sandan). Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. This includes striking, breaking balance, controlling limbs, takedowns, a variety of locks and cranks, dealing with armed opponents, grappling and throws. This DVD also includes demonstrations of the kata themselves and a discussion of the background and history of the Pinan / Heian series.

The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vol. 2
Yodan & Godan

The Pinan /Heian kata series are without a doubt the world’s most widely practised kata series. As popular as these kata are, only a comparatively small number of karate practitioners are aware of the practical fighting techniques these kata were created to record.

This DVD series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of two-person drills that will enable karateka – of all styles and levels of experience – to return practical combat skills to the heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.

Volume 2 shows the two-person drills associated with the final two Pinan / Heian kata (Yodan and Godan). This DVD also shows a series of extra drills to demonstrate how the lessons taught by the entire kata series can developed, varied and progressed. Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. The drills in this volume form a “mater class” on the principles and concepts introduced by the drills in the first volume. This DVD also includes demonstrations of the kata themselves and a discussion on the four stages of kata training.

6 - Extreme Impact with Steve Williams & Iain Abernethy (Watch this Space!)

Steve Williams"I fall to the floor. I’m breathing so hard that my lungs feel like they are about to burst. I look down at my broken body. I can hear nothing but the sound of my pounding heart. I have a splitting headache as my brain screams for oxygen. My muscles are so exhausted that my body can no longer move. So it doesn’t. Mentally and physically I have nothing left. This is hell. And then it starts; like it always does: “Get up! Get a grip of yourself and get on your feet!” The inner voice. My will. My sprit. It’s the one thing that will never lie down and die. So I get to my feet and I do it all again. This is how I train. This is INTENSITY."

Steve Williams is without a doubt one of the most impressive martial artists I have ever trained alongside. The grace of his movement and his power need to be respectively seen and felt to be believed. People who have held focus mitts for Steve have suffered broken bones and torn tendons. I’m one of those people. People who have held kicks-shields for Steve have had their ribs broken through the kick-shield. Thankfully I’m not one of those people. Despite Steve’s phenomenal talent, he is relatively unknown outside a small circle of people “in the know”. That’s about to change!

Steve and I have trained together for a number of years under the guidance of Peter Consterdine 8th dan. For the last few months Steve and I have been planning, in great detail, a project that will allow us to share with you the way we train and the drills we use to develop our striking and physical and mental attributes. If you are a martial artist who wants to train in a way that will separate you from the crowd, I think this project will be of great interest to you. Regardless of whether you are a "traditionalist" like myself, or a "modernist" like Steve. Please watch this space for details as things develop!

Extreme Impact: Enough Said!

11 - Free Boxing Book Download from Kirk Lawson

Kirk Lawson has made available the “The Modern Art of Boxing by Daniel Mendoza” for FREE download (details below). I’m a big fan of Kirk’s work and you can download this latest offering via the following link:

http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/the-modern-art-of-boxing/7471600

Daniel Mendoza, considered perhaps the greatest boxer of the Broughtonera, records in this book one of the earliest and most important manuals on English Boxing.

In this manual, probably written late 1789, the immensely popular Mendoza details the "scientific" methods he used to successfully compete in a terrifically physical sport for which no weight classes existed, himself being 5'7" and 160 lbs.

Herein he stipulates specifics on training, diet, and sleep. He then describes fight strategy and, perhaps most importantly, lays out a series of 6 detailed blow-by-blow lessons for instructing students in the science of English Boxing.

He closes out his manual with a description of one of his most famous fights against Richard Humphreys, the first three rounds of which read like the script for a Bruce Lee movie with Humphreys striking out, Mendoza parrying and then returning a single blow which knocks Humphreys off of feet, ending the round.

14 - Awareness by Nick Engelen

Once a month a Sunday morning class is dedicated solely to self defence. Sensei told us that self-defence is 5 percent hard skills in the form of simple techniques which are easy to perform under stress. The other 95 percent are soft skills. A lot of these were taught and explained in lectures and demonstrations.

We did some drills in order to improve our observation skills, counter tunnelling in on an opponent, slowing down our perception of time etc...

Sensei went into great lengths to explain how criminals work, access weapons and pick targets.

One of the students asked: ‘Why do we all have to know this? A warrior should be aware all the time.’

Sensei smiled and said: ‘Yes but aware of what? You can’t be aware of something you don’t know exists.

You can compare awareness to anti-virus software. If your system is attacked by a known virus the software will detect it as it knows how the virus behaves and what it does. When there is a new virus unknown to the antivirus software the virus will not be detected. That’s why it needs to be upgraded all the time.

Likewise if you don’t know what potential trouble looks like you will miss it or dismiss it. To quote one of the self-defence pioneers Marc Mac Young : “Awareness without knowledge is paranoia.” You can be aware of the three guys spread out along and leaning against the wall on the same sidewalk as you’re walking on. If you don’t know it is a set-up you will just see three guys chilling, enjoying the sunshine and nice girls walking past.

Ever noticed that if you just learned something new or maybe bought a new car thinking you are one of the first people to get this model you suddenly see it everywhere. Does it mean it wasn’t there before and everyone bought the model the same day as you did or there is an invasion of people with car? No it’s just that you weren’t aware of it.

To increase your awareness you must increase your knowledge. Study hard.’

Instructor Lineup

We are very pleased to announce that we have two of the U.K’s foremost martial artists for the course, being Dave Hazard and Russell Stutely. Both Peter Consterdine and Geoff Thompson will be instructing assisted by a line-up of the top coaches of the BCA.

Dave Hazard
: A 7th Dan in Karate with a worldwide reputation, Dave is acknowledged as one of the great technicians of the Karate world, but with a fierce fighting reputation and a karateka acknowledged by all top Japanese masters as one of the very best UK practitioners.

Dave started his Karate career in 1969 training with Sensei Eneoda, Kase, Shirai, Kawasoe and Masatoshi within the K.U.G.B as well as Nakayama. A graduate of the infamous JKA ‘Instructor’s Class’. Few foreigners survive the rigours of this course which is acknowledged as some of the hardest Karate training in the world, attendance being only by invitation.

Russell Stutely: Acknowledged as Europe’s Number 1 Pressure Point Expert, Russell has revolutionized the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) pressure point techniques with the traditional martial arts.

What Russell has done with his art is to open the door for all martial artists, from whatever discipline, to massively enhance their effectiveness through pressure point applications. Boxing, grappling and, in fact, any punching and kicking systems stand to be improved with these remarkable techniques.

What Russell can give you is the ‘magic bullet’ you’ve always been looking for - it’s like having a genuine ‘Vulcan Death Grip’ These techniques are real ‘force multipliers’.

Peter and GeoffPeter Consterdine & Geoff Thompson: Hopefully, we don’t need too much of an introduction, however both Geoff and I recognize that people expect our usual high level input to the course and they won't be disappointed. This is an opportunity that we both look forward to, for us to get in front of our BCA and non-BCA people on the course and inspire and motivate as well as instruct.

If you read the testimonials on the BCA website you will get a real feel for the friendliness you can expect and the openness displayed by all the instructors. Everyone is made to feel welcome and this is a course where no-one will expect you to be bowing and scraping but where we are simply ‘first amongst equals’. Whether you want to learn to ‘hit like a train’, or be motivated to actually change your life, you will get this from Geoff and myself.

Geoff and I will have presentations on various subjects in the evening Lecture Theatre sessions and are always on hand to answer your questions and help with your techniques.

BCA Coaches: We always ensure that the instructor to student ratio is high and throughout the weekend you will also have some of the U.K.s foremost combat coaches. You should, hopefully be familiar with our instructor cadre.

The support line-up includes; Iain Abernethy • John Skillen • Alan Peasland • Peter Lakin.

In their own right these are some of the most sought after seminar instructors both in the U.K and Internationally. They are some of the BCA’s frontline people and you will have numerous opportunities to pick their brains and plug into their unique skills.

The course will be held Thursday 29th October to Sunday 1st November and will include ALL accommodation, meals and training. Lilleshall is one of the finest sports training venues in the U.K.

20 - Walter Seaton 50 years in Karate

Walter Seaton was born in Middlesbrough in 1936. When he left the army in 1957, he realised that he needed a substitute for the hard physical training he had become accustomed to whilst serving two years National Service with the 1st Battalion of the Green Howards. During his search, he visited a well known boxing gym in Middlesbrough and found that karate and judo instruction were also available. On sight, Walter knew that a Martial Art was the answer, and Karate was that art. 50 years on, and Karate is still Walter’s fitness system.

He started serious training in 1959, practising a little known style of Shotakan called Yoseikan. The instructor was Mr Tetsugi Murakami - 3rd Dan. Unfortunately in 1962/63 the late Mr Murakami stopped visiting the UK and retired shortly afterwards. Walter continued practising with the Middlesbrough karate club. Then in 1964, Mr Tatsuo Suzuki opened a Dojo in London, and organised courses through out the UK. Walter was one of the first to attend a course in London, and decided to change style and train rather than wait for another Yoseikan or Shotokan instructor to settle in the UK. In 1965, Walter (and three others) were promoted to 1st Dan. These were the first Wado Dan Grade examinations in England.

After competing successfully in several events in London and the North of England Championship, Walter was selected to lead the England Wado team against France in 1965. During the next ten years Walter practised almost every day, and received instruction from some of the best known practitioners outside Japan. Apart from Mr Otsuka, these included Mr Tatsuo Suzuki, Masters Shiomitsu, Sakagami, Kobayashi, Kono, Maeda, Takamizawa, Fuji, M. Suzuki and Kitamura.

In his never ending search for technical excellence, Walter visited the Wadoryu Karate-Do Dojo at the Nihon University in Tokyo. Continued at
