May 2010 Newsletter:

New Workout Podcast, Transatlantic Seminar, 20% off DVDs this week & Canada here I come!

Hi All,

Crossing the Pond Information!Welcome to May’s newsletter! Due to a very busy schedule I did not manage to get a newsletter out last month, but I hope what we have to offer this month will make up for that!

The first thing I’d like to do in this newsletter is express my thanks to all those who helped organise and who attended the recent seminars in Australia. I was really moved by how far some people had travelled and by the friendly enthusiasm that everyone showed for what I do. I can’t thank you all enough!

I’m very excited to say I’ll be back in Canada in just over a week! This is my 3rd visit and I can’t wait to meet up with old friends and to make a few new ones! As I’m sure you’ll all know, if there is one thing I like it’s swapping ideas with people who are just as enthusiastic as I am about functional martial arts and kata bunkai! I am therefore really looking forward to seeing you all soon (see section 2).

In the not too distant future you will see some very impressive changes to iainabernethy.com We are finalising a major upgrade to the site which will make the site one of the most advanced martial arts websites around! You’ll see a lot of enhanced functionality which will make the site very easy to interrogate and find whatever information you are looking for. We also have a very advanced media player built into the site which will allow us to bring you what will become a specially filmed extensive library of bunkai / martial arts video instruction! We’ll also be updating the forum, podcast function and a load of other stuff besides. The site will also be altered so members (membership will be free and open to all) can more easily make contributions and hence make the site an even better source of information and central hub for all those who approach the traditional martial arts as we do.

I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as all of this is live, and I’d like to thank you all for your support over the years, for attending the seminars and purchasing our products so that we have the following and the finances to bring all of this to you.

The other big announcement in this newsletter is that it is now possible to book tickets for the transatlantic (Seattle, USA and Coventry, UK) “Crossing the Pond” martial arts seminar with myself, Marc “Animal” MacYoung, Kris Wilder, Nicolas Yang and Alan Peasland! I’m thrilled to be part of this history making event and the UK one has already seen bookings from as far away as Spain and Norway! Please checkout section 3 for details and video and podcast previews! This event is going to be HUGE and places are going fast.

This newsletter also has links to a brand new workout video and podcast (see section 1), the forthcoming Extreme-Impact You-Tube Channel, and an exclusive 20% off offer on DVDs this week!

We also have loads of information on some great training opportunities including your chances to train with such high quality martial artists as Ernesto 'Mr Perfect' Hoost, Peter Consterdine & Geoff Thompson, Al Peasland & Mick Tully, and Matty Evans & Tony Somers!

I hope you enjoy the new podcast, the new videos and everything else in this newsletter! I’ll be back with more very soon!

All the best,

Iain

"Did you know that squirrels are the Devil's oven mitts?" - Miss Piggy

(Look, it's hard finding an intelligent and motivational martial quote each month, so this will have to do you! And besides most of us would long for a Shuto as effective as hers! And the above may possibly have a deeper meaning like the "one hand clapping" thing?!? I know it sounds like gibberish, but maybe that's your fault? Maybe you just don't get it? Maybe you're just not deep enough to appreciate the wisdom of this blonde cloth pig on a stick? So quit moaning about my lack of research this month, accept that it's your shallow thinking that's the problem, and ponder the "deep wisdom" of this undeniably effective martial artist! Hiya! - Iain)

1 - New Podcast: CV and Muscular Endurance Workout!

Cardiovascular Martial Arts Workout (Podcast)! This month’s podcast is a cardiovascular martial arts workout! It’s been a while since we have done a workout podcast and I’d been receiving lots of requests for one. All you need for this one is a little space and some light dumbbells. You then play the podcast and work along with it for a 23 minute training session that involves various cardiovascular exercises, muscular endurance exercises, and various types of shadow fighting!

Before doing the workout, you should watch the video that goes with this podcast (found on the blog of iainabernethy.com if you are accessing this podcast via iTunes etc). This video has demonstrations of the key exercises and should make it clear what is required.

IMPORTANT: If you are unsure of how to perform any of the exercises safely, effectively and efficiently then do not attempt this workout without first seeking instruction from a suitably qualified and experienced person. Also be sure to work at a suitable pace and immediately stop if you feel any undue pain or discomfort.

The workout is cardiovascular and muscular endurance in nature and is time-based (i.e. each activity is engaged in for a given time). It is therefore important to work at a pace that allows you to keep moving for the duration of each section. If you find that you need to stop / take breaks because of exhaustion, then you need to reduce the pace at which you are working.

I hope you enjoy the workout and find it a useful addition to your training program. I’ll be back with a normal podcast in a few weeks!

PS The bench press picture above has absolutely nothing to do with this workout!

3 - Crossing the Pond Trans-Atlantic Seminar!

Crossing the Pond Information!I have some very exiting news! Later this year myself, Kris Wilder, Marc “Animal” MacYoung, Alan Peasland and Nicolas Yang will be conducting two not to be missed two day events! The first one will take place in Seattle in the USA (14th and 15th of August) and the second event will take place a week later in Coventry in the UK (21st and 22nd of August).

I’m thrilled to be able to be able to meet up with members and visitors from the USA as well having the opportunity to teach as part of such an amazing line up!

Alan is a good friend who I have trained with and along side on numerous occasions. Kris is an amazing karateka and a really nice guy. He stayed with my family and I the first time he visited the UK and I look forward to spending some more time with him. I’ve been a big fan of Marc’s books for decades and, although we’ve swapped a few emails, we have yet to meet up in person and I am really looking forward to that. Nicolas Yang’s father’s books are also firm favourites of mine and I’m very excited to be able to meet and teach along side Nick.

I have to say this is an amazing mix of the “traditional” and the “reality based” (not that I see a difference between the two terms) and I’m sure serious martial artists in both the UK and USA will be very keen to be part of this history making event!

4 - Extreme Impact You-Tube channel coming soon!

Extreme Impact PageJust a quick update on the Extreme Impact downloads and to let you know about the new You-Tube Channel. A few weeks ago, Steve and I filmed another 5 units! We covered Advanced Fitness and Muscular Endurance Drills; Angled Knockouts: Hooks and Uppercuts; Confusion Drills; Footwork – Dynamic Striking on the move; and Basic Bag Drills – Training Alone! (the bag work drills being a favourite of mine).

It took around 4 hours to film the demonstrations alone and if you want to see how sweaty and purple I can get these downloads are sure to be of interest!

They are currently being edited together and we hope to have them available in the summer. Thanks to everyone who has purchased the first five units as 100% of the money generated has gone into the production of units 6 to 10. Making such programmes is expensive and very time consuming and we could not have done it without your support.

The other bit of news is that Steve and I have been talking about the best way we can give everyone regular training tips and updates. We decided that a You-Tube channel would be the most efficient way to do that. The idea is that once a month (minimum) we’ll record a little clip at the end of our training sessions that will show a drill to develop a particular martial attribute! The channel has been set up and will be fully active some time next month:

I hope you enjoy the channel and the new units!

All the best,

Iain

PS Steve will be writing a training tips section for these newsletter soon too!

8 - Andrew Abernethy Sponsored Cycle Ride

My brother (Andrew Abernethy) is going to cycle the full length of Britain later in the year. Aside from the challenge itself, the main reason he is doing so is to raise £2000 for Action Medical Research; a great children's charity dedicated to improving the health of babies and children in the UK. If any of you have a pound, a dollar or a euro spare, we’d really appreciate you helping Andy to reach his target. If you visit the webpage below you can securely donate and leave a message of support:

http://www.action.org.uk/sponsor/andyabernethy

Thank you very much!

Message from Andrew Abernethy:

Hi,

Thank you in advance for visiting my sponsorship page.

I am raising money for Action Medical Research, a great children's charity dedicated to improving the health of babies and children in the UK.

For almost 60 years the charity has been behind numerous breakthroughs such as the UK polio vaccine, ultrasound scanning in pregnancy, and more recently the fetal heart rate monitor a new state-of-the-art device that could help save thousands of at-risk babies.

Action Medical Research relies entirely on donations to fund a range of research projects that address serious childhood conditions and improve quality of life for children with disabilities.

You will also be supporting the Touching Tiny Lives appeal which is raising funds to help reduce premature birth and improve care of sick and vulnerable babies. Your support will help continue this potentially life-saving work.

Please tick the Gift Aid box if you are a UK tax payer as the UK Government will contribute an additional 25% on the money that I have raised.

Thanks again,

Andy

9 - Charity Martial Arts Festival in Bath (16th May 2010)

Message from Charlie Wildish:

Three Somerset Rotary clubs have come together to organise what will be the largest ever Martial Arts Festival in the city of Bath (and probably in the South West of England).

The Festival starts at 1.00pm on Sunday 16th May, 2010. It will include demonstrations by 12 different martial arts, all of whom have 15 minutes each to display their art. It has been a deliberate policy to make this Rotary Martial Arts Festival as varied as possible. Along with the commonly know martial arts like Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Ju Jitsu, and Aikido; are some not so well known styles like Systema (Russian), Stav (Viking), FAST Defence and others.

The clubs selected to perform are mainly from the Bath/Bristol, though some are coming from as far as Cardiff (Systema) and Reading (Krav Maga). These are all respected clubs with a good track record in their style.

For a full listing of the styles/clubs taking part, see www.RotaryMAF.com

The venue is the new and prestigious Bath University Sports Village, where a number of our Olympic athletes train. This was selected as being the only suitable venue in Bath, with tiered seating so that everybody could see properly. It is hoped that we will be able to get in up to 2000 spectators (University to confirm exact numbers).

Entry will be £10 per person and all money raised will go to support 2 charities; Dorothy House Hospice and Mentoring Plus. Being organised by Rotary, there are no commercial interests in this event, though it is hoped that the martial arts in general will receive a big boost.

Martial artists should be altruistic and your support in making this event a success would be greatly appreciated. It is an opportunity to show what we (the martial arts community) are capable off; both in terms of our physical abilities and our ability to give back to society, set an example and show the values that martial arts teaches us.

Full details are available at www.RotaryMAF.com. Please forward this to any contacts might be interested.

11 - The Shaolin Temple: A History and Evolution of Chinese Martial Arts, Zen Buddhism and the Shaolin Warrior Monks (New Book by Ashley Croft)

Following five years of research and numerous trips to China and the Shaolin Temple, Ashley Croft has written a history of the Shaolin Temple and its world-renowned soldier monks. This has included speaking with the surviving Shaolin Monks, getting access to the most sacred parts of the temple and getting translations of inscriptions on stone tablets at the temple itself that are hundreds of years old. Ashley has also researched and had translated many Chinese documents not yet available to the wider world. This is a great read with many tales of heroic feats of the monks who have undoubtedly helped to shape the martial arts we practice today. The book can be ordered from all bookshops or online from www.amazon.co.uk:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shaolin-Temple-History-Evolution-Buddhism/dp/0954446631

The Shaolin Temple has a fascinating and intriguing past. It started with a small covered platform built at the base of the Songshan Mountains on the order of Emperor Xiaowen for an Indian monk named Batuo, as a place for him to translate scriptures, and to spread the word of Buddhism. The year was 495.

It is known that the forest and region surrounding the temple was often plagued with bandits. Wild beasts such as tigers and bears are also known to have roamed freely. This is recorded on early stone tablets preserved at the temple. As a consequence some of the monks trained in martial arts to act as a protection force for the temple and its property. Records suggest this occurred almost as soon as the first stone was laid. Batuo’s early disciples are said to have been exponents of martial arts and were the founding fathers of a regiment of warrior monks that are known in Chinese as Seng Bing, meaning literally monk soldiers. The word seng means monk and bing soldier. Over time the warrior monks became an inseparable part of the temples culture and a national tradition that has continued throughout the temples 1500 year history.

Over time the monk soldiers were a combination of home grown martial artists who learnt and developed their fighting skills within the Shaolin Temple, and people who entered the temple already skilled in some form of fighting art. It is not hard to imagine that some of the monk soldiers were probably hired for their fighting skills and were in effect mercenaries similar to what occurred with the Knight Templar’s in medieval Europe in the 1300’s.

At times the martial art skills of the monk soldiers were used outside of the original protective remit. There are records of Shaolin monks’ engagement in battles across China in support of the ruling dynasty and on occasion as part of an orchestrated rebellion to remove the incumbent emperor and with the emperor the dynasty concerned.

The first of such recorded feats was as early as 621 when 13 Shaolin monks assisted Prince Li Shi Min (who became Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty) in a decisive battle against the forces of a rival warlord Wang Shi Cong. A contemporary record of this event is carved into a stone stele at the Shaolin Temple which names the 13 monks involved. To reward the assistance provided Li Shi Min gifted the Shaolin Temple with a watermill and land, and the monks themselves were offered official titles. This and many other martial feats that have been attributed to the Shaolin monks are described in detail within the book. The book also provides a photographic journey through the temple and its main buildings.

There is more to the Shaolin Temple than its martial arts. What is not so well known is it was the birth place of Chinese Chan Buddhism which is more commonly known across the world as Zen. The creator of Chan Buddhism and therefore the first ancestor of the now widely practiced Zen sect was the Indian monk Bodhidharma (Da Mo in Chinese). Bodhidharma arrived at the Shaolin Temple in 527 and legend states that on arrival he found that the monks in general were in a poor state of health and unable to cope with the long periods of meditation required when practicing his style of Buddhism. He reportedly climbed the Shaoshi peak and lived a hermitic life for nine years during which time he meditated and contemplated the dilemma. When he emerged he started to teach a series of exercises to the monks to help with the vigour’s of long periods of meditation. These exercises are thought to be the forerunner of Shaolin Qigong and are known as Shi Ba Louhan Shou (18-hands of arhat).

The Shaolin Temple has over the years occupied substantial tracts of land with satellite buildings being located as far as 3.5 km away from the main temple compound in the foothills of the Shaoshi peak. At one time the temple is reported to have had 1000 buildings and a curtilage covering 9.3 sq km of cultivated land. At its height the temple housed 1000 monks of which there were 500 monk soldiers. Its past has however been turbulent and its fate often at the whim of the incumbent emperor and the popularity of Buddhism at any given point in time. As a consequence the temple has frequently been attacked and on occasion destroyed by fire. The last attack was in 1928 when warlord Shi Yousan led a contingent of his forces against the temple and almost totally destroyed it.

Despite these past attacks the temple has always been rebuilt and survived the test of time. The current temple has again been restored to close to its former glory and restoration work is still ongoing. There are many historical artefacts and relics still in situ that provide an invaluable insight into this amazing place. Anyone who has a serious interest in martial arts and the history and origin of the styles having roots in the Shaolin Temple will find it difficult not to be taken in by the temple’s story. Likewise anyone interested or following Chan / Zen Buddhism will be fascinated to learn of its history and how the Shaolin Temple played a significant role its development and spread across China, Japan, and Asia, and now the rest of the world.
