March 2010 Newsletter:
How a kata records a style (new podcast) and 3 new articles!
Hi All,
Welcome to the March newsletter! March!? What the hell happened to the first quarter of the year!?! If anyone finds my February could they mail it back to me please :-) Plenty has happened in the last month though!
The first thing to mention is that a new podcast (see section 1) and three new articles have recently been added to the website (see section 2). I hope you enjoy them and find them of value.
Other exciting news is that the times and locations of all the Canada seminars in May have now been finalised (see section 6) and all the seminars for the rest of the year have been added to the seminars section (see section 5). I’ll also be teaching in the USA for the first time later this year (see section 7)! Those in the UK should also check out section 7 as you'll have an amazing training opportunity in August!
As I mentioned earlier in the year, I am cutting back on the number of seminars I do by around a third, so what is listed in section 5 will be more or less it for 2010. As you can see, my dairy fills up very fast these days and it’s important that those wishing to organise seminars contact me well in advance. I do hope no one is disappointed that 2010 is now more or less fully booked. The good news is that there are still a reasonable number of opportunities to work with me this year though and I look forward to seeing you all at the various events!
The download format continues to be popular and you may be interested to know that “The Pinan / Heian Series - The Complete Fighting System Volumes 1 & 2” are now available as downloads too! (See section 4).
Those who have been seminar regulars and who have worked closely with me over the years may be interested to know that there may be the opportunity to do some long term in-depth training with me in the specifics of my of my system (i.e. learn the full syllabus up to and including 1st dan) and grade in Abernethy Jissen Karate-Do. This is a big commitment – as anyone who has ever seen my syllabus can tell you! – that is not for the fainthearted and there will only be two or three places available. I’ll have more details in future newsletters and the latest podcast has a little more info. However, I thought I’d put this out there now so potentially qualified people can have a think about if this is something they would like to consider.
As of tomorrow, I’m off to Australia for the best part of two weeks! I’m really looking forward to meeting up with everyone at the seminars! Should be great fun!
All the orders will be processed as normal, the forum will still be open (I hope to drop in a few times when I'm near a PC), and Helen will be manning the office to continue to run things as smoothly as she does. Probably more smoothly with yours truly out of the way!
The only difference will be that I won't be here to answer all the emails sent to me personally. I love receiving emails and the success of the site means I receive a great deal. It normally takes me around 3 hours a day to reply to them all, and this obviously means quite a few will build up while I'm away. So many in fact, that there will be no chance of me catching up if I were to let them build up. I'd therefore be most grateful if you could hold off sending any personal emails to me until the 1st of April. Helen will be there for all general queries, but I've asked her to send a generic "out of the office" reply to my personal emails. Thank you for your understanding.
Right then ... off “down under”! :-)
All the best,
Iain
PS The weekend course I am doing with Mike Liptrot is around two-thirds full, so please act quickly if you want to ensure a place! (see section 3).

1 - How a Kata Records a Style (New Podcast)
In
this podcast I’d like to explain how an individual kata can record a complete
fighting system! There is a common view that individual kata are for specific
circumstances, and it is only when all the kata are combined that we have a
complete style. I think this is an incorrect and mistaken view; both from a
practical and historical perspective. Surely, one kata can’t record a complete
fighting system though? Well, in my view it can!
You may be asking how a relatively small number of techniques can ever be
considered to be a full system? Well if you are, listen to the podcast and I’ll
do my best to explain my thinking to you! Kata are a lot deeper and much wider
reaching than many people suppose.
As part of this discussion we will also cover the nature of kata, how kata
should be practised in order to realise its full potential, what some of the
past masters had to say about kata and its application, and how and why kata
were created in the first place.
I hope you enjoy this latest offering and I’ll be back with a new workout
podcast and online video next month!

2 - Three new Iain Abernethy Articles added to website
I’ve been a bit remiss when it comes to updating the articles section of the website recently. The good news is that I have now got my act together and have added three new articles since the last newsletter. All of these articles started life as podcasts, so those who want a handy print out or prefer to read than listen will hopefully enjoy them. I promise not to leave it so long between updates in the future!

3 - Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot 2010 Weekend Seminar!
On
the 1st and 2nd of May Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot will be teaching a
not-to-be-missed two day martial arts seminar! This is the fourth annual seminar Iain and Mike have done together. These events
have been extremely popular and we expect this year's event to fill up very quickly. Once again, this event will take place in the highly impressive Kendal Judo Club Dojo - a recognised Olympic facility - which is in the heart of the Lake District national park.
This seminar is open to all martial artists - regardless of background, style, and current level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by Iain & Mike - will be issued to all participants.
This not-to-be-missed training opportunity will see Iain and Mike covering the following topics:
· A detailed breakdown of bunkai for Passai / Bassai-Dai (including the associated two man and live drills). By the end of the weekend, participants will leave with a detailed understanding of the wide-ranging applications of this important form. The weekend format will allow Iain to go into greater depth than is possible in books, DVDs or standard seminars. If you want to learn in detail the close range combative methods of this form – including strikes, gripping, locks, cranks, takedowns, etc - this is the ideal seminar to attend.
· The core footwork and movement skills needed for effective throwing. Leading grappling coach Mike Liptrot will teach a series of solo and partner drills that will develop the footwork and movement skills needed to set up and execute throws.
· Iain will be teaching a series of pad-work drills to develop fast flowing transitions and power on the move. Being able to hit fast and hard is a vital requirement of effective martial arts, and yet the subjects of power generation and effective transitions between techniques are rarely addressed in much of modern training. Steve Williams – a regular training partner of Iain’s and the co-presenter of the Extreme Impact series – will be assisting Iain in this section!
· Mike will be covering the fundamentals of effective groundwork that will give those new to groundwork a solid start to their study. Those with more familiarity with groundwork will also have the opportunity to further develop their pinning, locking and choking skills through more advanced sessions with Mike.
· Iain and Mike will also be teaching joint sessions on how striking and grappling can be integrated together. This will include when to exploit the throwing opportunities that striking can present, throws as counters to strikes, strikes as counters to throws, effective striking following throws, etc. Aside from the discussing how these two combative methodologies can be integrated, these joint sessions are also certain to include a great deal of “good natured banter” and Iain and Mike try to convince you of the superiority of their chosen methodologies! Not to mention a plethora of “Fat Lad” jokes at Iain’s expense!
· There will also be short lectures in the centres high-tech lecture facilities, plenty of opportunity to have your martial questions answered, and the opportunity to attend an informal social gathering and meal on the Saturday evening!
People may attend the whole weekend or just one of the days. A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by Iain & Mike - will be issued to all participants cover the time in attendance.

4 - The Pinan / Heian Series Complete Fighting System Downloads
The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System DVDs are now available as downloads! Downloads are £10 cheaper than DVDs and there is obviously no postal costs. Each download costs just £15 and you can find more details on the following webpage:
http://shop.iainabernethy.com/acatalog/downloads.html
VOLUME
ONE: This series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of
two-person drills for the Pinan / Heian series that will enable karateka - of
all styles and levels of experience - to return practical combat skills to the
heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that
ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.
Volume 1 shows the two-person drills associated with the first three of the
Pinan / Heian series (Shodan, Nidan and Sandan). Viewers will see how these
drills perfectly follow the kata sequences, with each drill building on the
next, so that the practitioner becomes versed in a holistic set of combative
methods. This includes striking, breaking balance, controlling limbs, takedowns,
a variety of locks and cranks, grappling and throws. This download also includes
demonstrations of the kata themselves and a discussion of the background and
history of the Pinan / Heian series.
Cost: £15.00 (Save £10.00 + No Shipping Costs)

VOLUME
TWO: This series reveals, for the very first time, a unique set of
two-person drills for the Pinan / Heian series that will enable karateka - of
all styles and levels of experience - to return practical combat skills to the
heart of kata training. The drills are logical and structured in a way that
ensures the gap between solo kata and live combat is effectively bridged.
Volume 2 shows the two-person drills associated with the final two Pinan / Heian
kata (Yodan and Godan). This DVD also shows a series of extra drills to
demonstrate how the lessons taught by the entire kata series can be developed,
varied and progressed. Viewers will see how these drills perfectly follow the
kata sequences, with each drill building on the next, so that the practitioner
becomes versed in a holistic set of combative methods. The drills in this volume
form a "master class" on the principles and concepts introduced by the drills in
the first volume. This DVD also includes demonstrations of the kata themselves
and a discussion on the four stages of kata training.

Review of "The Pinan / Heian Series: The Complete Fighting System Vols 1 & 2" by
Goran Powell:
All of Iain Abernethy’s DVDs come highly recommended and these two are no
exception. Iain shows a series of pragmatic two-person drills that will be of
special relevance to those practising the Pinan/Heian kata, though useful to
everyone seeking realistic fighting applications from kata.
What Iain does so well is build a logical progression in the drills. They begin
by developing fundamental skills: clearing the guard, taking a position of
advantage and striking — first with the fist, then with the open hand. Later
drills progress to throws and takedowns, locks, cranks and strangles.
The drills never rely on contrived movements on the part of your partner. These
are all highly workable techniques, simple to learn quickly and develop as a
reflex action. Any (or all) of them would make a great addition to the syllabus
of a club wishing to achieve a new level of pragmatism in its training.
With insightful explanations along the way, you get the feeling that Iain really
has understood the intentions of the kata’s creator, Itosu, and brought the
master’s fighting system to life.
Interestingly, with the emphasis on close-quarter work, some of the early drills
have a ‘Chinese’ flavour to them, reminiscent (though not the same as) Wing Chun
style drills — perhaps a hint that when Itosu created the Pinans, karate was not
as far removed from Chinese arts as it has now become.
Mr Abernethy has delivered yet again. These two DVDs come strongly recommended
for all karateka, not just students of the Pinan/Heian series.

13 - Staying on the Path: New Martial Arts E-Book
New e
book 'Staying on the Path' helps Martial Arts Students Stay on the Path to
Success
'Out of a class of 30 new martial art students just one or two make it to black
belt and beyond'. That's around 7% at best. Why do so few make the grade?
According to Deborah Jeffreys author of 'Staying on the Path' many students are
not sure what failure is in martial arts. She believes that "failing a grading,
losing a sparring match or not breaking a board are not really failures at all.
They are just set-backs or hurdles to overcome. Learning to deal with set backs
and hurdles is a vital part of the martial arts process." Jeffreys says that
real failure only comes when students give up trying.
Jeffreys emphasises that having a purpose for training is important in martial
arts. She feels that students should ask themselves why they are training and
what they want to achieve from the process. A sense of purpose can then help to
build determination which in turn helps them through the tougher sections of the
journey.
Geoff Thompson has written the foreword for 'Staying on the Path'.
'I wish this book 'Staying on the Path - Your Guide to Success in Martial Arts'
was around when I first started training.
I would have devoured every page, because it is full of hard earned and wise
information for anyone that is looking to train in martial arts and doesn't
quite know where to start.
I can't tell you what clubs are good and bad in your area, and I can't tell you
what your 'right' path should be but I can point you in the direction of at
least one worthy book that will definitely help you to find out, and this is it.
Very inspiring, very informative and highly recommended.'
Talent Means Nothing
"It's good to know that staying on the path to black belt and beyond in martial
arts has absolutely nothing to do with talent" says Jeffreys "We've seen some
great talents come into our dojo. Amazing white belts who can already do the
splits and seem to learn kicks effortlessly. It seems so easy for them. But
then, when their training starts to get tough... they often 'take a break' And
we never see them in the dojo again. I think for people with talent set-backs
can be tough to take. I guess if you are talented you are not so used to dealing
with hurdles. If you harness the power of perseverance and doggedly pratice you
will get to where you deserve to go."
Striving for Perfection
Some people think they can train enough to make every kick and strike perfect.
Jeffreys says that the answer to dealing with a perfectionist nature is to
accept that progression is OK. To accept that turning up and training and giving
your best is just fine. To accept you are human and you will never be perfect.
And to understand that however hard you try to smooth out the ride, there will
always be bumps in the road.
Learning to be Patient
Many of us are used to getting things fast these days. Fast food. Fast
transport. Fast internet. But many good things in life are worth waiting for.
And passing your next belt test in martial arts is one of those good things.
According to Jeffreys "learning how to be patient is just another hurdle on the
journey. If you have one eye on the end goal you are not in the right place. You
are not here in the present on the path. And you are not fully focused on what
you are doing now."
For a limited time only 'Staying on the Path is Available for just $9.99 (US).

Last
month I taught a joint seminar with Kevin O’Hagan at the highly impressive
Bristol Dojo (www.bristoldojo.com)! It
was great fun and I am very grateful to Simon O’Brien for organizing the event
and to all those who came along and made the day so special. Kevin never fails
to impress me; in regards to both his teaching style and the potency of what he
teaches. I strongly recommend that those who have not trained with Kevin check
out his website and the videos it contains:

19 - Tools and Tool Boxes (new article by Nick Engelen)
One evening I walked from my car to the gym when I saw Sensei taking his bag out of his car. I greeted him and walked over to him. ‘Good to see you’, he said, ‘can you please help me with carrying these toolboxes to the dojo? We will need them later.’ I took two of the three toolboxes and went inside. We put them in the dojo where after we went for the dressing room to get changed.
I was quite curious what the toolboxes were for. I decided not to ask but just wait.
Back in the dojo everyone was curious what the toolboxes where for and some were joking about Sensei teaching us some techniques hidden in chores like in the karate kid movie.
When Sensei came in everyone lined up where after class started with the bowing ritual and a warm up.
After the warm-up sensei had us seated again.
‘Today we are going to focus on self-defence as promised last week.’ He said. ‘In here we have people with various backgrounds, Mick has been a bouncer, Bob did some shop security and bodyguard work and Marc and Stewart have been fighting some competitions.
All are different settings. To the outsider it might look as it’s all related to martial arts but reality is quite different.
‘Ok gather around’ sensei said guiding us to the three toolboxes. While opening the toolboxes sensei went on: ‘I brought these toolboxes as an analogy. The first one I borrowed from a carpenter, as you can see it’s filled with chisels, a hammer, some screwdrivers, an ice pick, a couple of saws, cord, pencil etc... All tools designed for the tasks of a carpenter. The next toolbox here is from my friend who is an electrician. Some tools are similar to the carpenter’s as both the carpenter and the electrician work in the building trade. I see an ice pick, a saw, a hammer, a chisel for chiselling stone, a pencil, various pliers, etc... The last toolbox is a toolbox I nicked from a car mechanic, I will give it back to him tomorrow. When I open it I see a hammer, some pliers, a couple of spanners, an adjustable spanner, etc...’
As you can see all three boxes have tools in common but not many. Different problems require different tools to solve. The electrician can’t use the carpenter’s chisels to cut trough concrete as they are developed for cutting wood. Likewise the car mechanic will not use the electrician pliers to try loosening a bolt.
If these toolboxes resemble martial arts, competition, self-defence, etc... It would mean that some techniques would work in different scenario’s just like the tools but that for the different problems require adapted and or different tools. We can’t make a problem fit the tool, likewise we can’t make the situation fit to our martial art. So very little of our martial arts toolbox will be applicable in a self-defence situation. As explained before only a small percentage of self-defence is physical. That’s why this evening we will do some scenario’s to practise the soft skills and to get into the required mindset nothing goes above a good anaerobic work-out. Let’s start.’
