New Podcast: Verbal De-escalation

Hello Everyone!

Verbal De-escalationWelcome to March’s newsletter! We’ve had a lot of new subscribers this month so a warm welcome to all the new people and a big thanks to all those who have been spreading the word!

The main bit of news is that we have just added a brand new podcast to the website! This month we look at verbal de-escalation or “talking your way out”. Martial artists often have a bad habit of assuming self-protection is all about physical technique, whereas in reality it is the overlooked non-physical aspects that are more important. So in this podcast we look at the basics of verbal side of self-protection and some of the things we can do to help avoid situations getting physical wherever possible. If you are serious about true self-protection this stuff should be part of your training and practise. Please checkout section 1 for more details.

We also have a link to a great online lecture on the history of karate by Charles Goodin and Pat Nakata. It’s really interesting set of videos which you are sure to enjoy. If you see section 2 you can find the link to the webpage where you can view the lecture online.

Section 3 also tells you about how my daughter and I got our pink belts and how you can too ... and do some good in the process :-)

We also have lots of information on training opportunities that are sure to be of interest. Please take a look at the contents list below and see what is of interest.

Many thanks to everyone for your support of these newsletters! I really appreciate it!

Speak soon!

All the best,

Iain

"A pacifist is not really a pacifist if he unable to make the choice between violence and non-violence. A true pacifist is able to kill or maim in the blink of an eye, but at the moment of impending destruction of the enemy he chooses non-violence. He chooses peace … Only a warrior who has tempered his spirit in conflict and who has confronted himself and his greatest fears can in my opinion make the choice to be a pacifist.” - Yukiyoshu Takamura

1 - Verbal De-escalation (New Podcast)

Verbal De-escalation

In this month’s podcast we will be looking at verbal de-escalation. What I mean by that is what we can do to calm people down, avoid unnecessary physical conflict, and “talk our way out”.

It’s not enough to simply give the topic lip service, as many do, with throw away lines such as “talk your way out if you can”. That’s like saying “punch hard” and expecting students to be able to punch well despite never having being taught punching or having practised it. There is huge skill set associated with talking your way out of situations that should not be ignored.

Training solely in the physical, and totally ignoring the vitally important non-physical aspects of self-defence, gives us the massive problem that all we have is a physical solution! We could therefore find ourselves in situations we should never have been in, unable to avoid situations that could have been avoided, and running the risk of physical harm (and legal problems) when there was a way to avoid the situation becoming physical. If we truly wish to adequately address the needs of self-protection then we need to include a lot more in our study and teaching than physical technique. Verbal de-escalation is one such element and I hope you find this exploration of some of the basics interesting.

This podcast also has some news and a competition related to my accent! Long time listeners will remember we had a similar competition a few years ago where I said a phrase in my normal accent and my local dialect to see if anyone could understand what I said. People still ask me about it years later so I felt it was about time we did another one. It also seemed appropriate for a podcast on talking! So at the end of the podcast you have the chance to win some books and DVDs.

I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with more soon!

2 - Online lecture on the history of karate by Charles Goodin and Pat Nakata

If you follow the link you can watch a great online lecture on the history of karate by Charles Goodin and Pat Nakata! I've added a description to the comments below. It's long and quite in-depth so grab a cup of coffee, put your feet up and enjoy! Thanks to Holger for adding this to the website. It's a great find!

http://iainabernethy.co.uk/content/cgoodin-and-pnakata-history-karate

"Learn about the origins of Karate (Tudi, "Tang or China" Hand) among members of the highest levels of Ryukyuan society. Karate was part of the upbringing of selected sons of noble and samurai families who were trained to become bushi, cul...tured gentlemen. Based largely on Chinese martial arts and values, Karate was usually taught secretly or in private. After the Ryukyu Kingdom was abolished and Okinawa became a prefecture (1879), Karate became a part of the public school curriculum. Taught publicly and to a large number of students for the first time, Karate had to adapt to Japanese values and objectives."

3 - Iain Abernethy gets his pink belt … and so can you!

Last week I added this picture of my daughter and the text below to my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/iainabernethy

I added a new rank to my grading syllabus this weekend. An optional honorary 11th kyu (pink belt) that was added at the request of my daughter (age 6). The (negotiated) requirements for this esteemed grade are: A) Having a dad who is a 6th dan. B) Having a “cool” kick. C) Looking cute in a pink belt (my addition :-). Needless to say she passed no problem at all and wore the belt to the dojo with great pride. Being a dad is so much fun!

Pink Belt (Iain's Daughter)

The picture was the most “liked” thing I’ve ever posted (well she is incredibly cute!) and so I added this further post the next day.

Well my daughters pink belt was very popular! I was awarded my pink belt a few years ago as you can see in this picture of myself and leading UK Judo coach Mike Liptrot. This was part of a charity fund raising campaign organised by Karen Gadd (to my left). It was this belt that my daughter saw and had to have! If you want your own pink belt, and want to help raise some money for cancer research, please follow this link! :-) http://www.justgiving.com/pinkbelt

If you want to be in with a chance of having your own pink belt and do some good, then please follow this link: http://www.justgiving.com/pinkbelt

Thanks in advance for your support!

4 - Willie Lim Seminar in Yorkshire on 25th of March

Message from Peter Consterdine:

1st BCA/BCKA Instructor’s Course 2012

With apologies for the short notice, the first BCA/BCKA Instructor’s course of 2012 will feature one of the world’s foremost martial artists, Willie Lim.

A Master of Tae Kwon Do, Karate and Tai Chi, Willie is the person who has most successfully been able to combine the soft and hard martial arts.

He has trained under great masters such as Taika Oyata of Ryukyu Kempo (old school karate) and is also renowned for his application of tuite (pressure point) to his system ‘Classical Dimensions Martial Arts’

It is an honour to train with Willie and he is one of my favourite people in the arts. He makes learning enjoyable.

He will be covering how the soft arts generate power, a special hand drill that covers the front of the body and Bunkai applications. A rare opportunity to train with one of the greats.

Peter Consterdine

This course will be limited in numbers – first come first served - and costs £60. The seminar is being SUBSIDISED by the BCA / BCKA and will cost BCA / BCKA £35 for members.

6 - Marc MacYoung teaching in Sheffield, UK

The only 2012 Marc ‘Animal’ MacYoung Lecture and Seminar in The UK is now open for bookings at incredibly affordable prices and welcomes all kindred spirits.

The Lecture and seminar by Marc 'Animal' MacYoung is in Sheffield this September, he will not be training anywhere else in the UK this year or for the foreseeable future.

Marc will present his own unique experiences in a special Friday evening lecture at the University of Sheffield; this is for an insight into the life of a man who has faced and survived almost every conceivable form of violence.

Marc MacYoung was raised in situational poverty. He grew up on the gang infested streets of Los Angeles. This gave him extensive first-hand experience with crime, violence and the people who commit them. He freely admits, "When I was younger, I was part of the reason why LA was so dangerous." Turning his life around with the help of his retired FBI step-father, Marc embarked on a career of protecting people from criminals and predators.

He's worked as a bodyguard, bouncer, event security and director of a correctional institute. Although proficient with use of force, he quickly realized that de-escalation saved him from having to do paperwork.

Marc developed the internationally recognized Five Stages of Violent Crime program that is a standard of threat identification and articulating immediate danger. The Five Stages is taught in use of force classes and concealed carry courses throughout the US. He's a member of the International Police Defensive Tactics Association and taught police de-escalation and defensive tactics in four different countries, the USA, Germany, Poland and Sweden. He is also a court recognized expert witness on cases involving violence.

Lecture Evening Friday 21st September
‘Crime Avoidance; in the Words of a Survivor’

Crime is a process, a very predictable and easy to recognize process. A process that if you identify it soon enough you can non-violently derail it and prevent it from even happening. Internationally renowned expert Marc MacYoung shows you the easy to recognize the unmistakable danger signs of developing violence. This is not a 'self-defense' course. Stay safe without having to resort to physical violence.

This will be lecture will be followed by two training seminars on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September. Numbers are restricted to allow more personal interaction. The package includes photos with Marc, just bring your camera and I am sure he will sign any of his books you have.

Seminar day one, Saturday 22nd September
‘Applying Martial Mechanics’.

Generating power is easy. Unfortunately, losing it is even easier. This seminar first helps you stop the countless small 'leaks' rob you of power. After preventing power loss, the same mechanics are applied to dramatically increase your power delivery. This is not some 'secret' esoteric art or UMFS (ultimate MacYoung fighting style). The components are already in your system. This seminar will help you understand and apply them more effectively. Using the tools you will acquire in this seminar, you can run diagnostics on everything you do to make it more powerful and effective.

Seminar day two, Sunday 23rd September,
‘Surviving a Knife Attack’.

The tactics of a street knife attack are radically different than what is taught in martial arts schools. Those differences will get you killed or hospitalized when facing a blade outside the safety of the school. This seminar teaches you the priorities, tactics and complications you MUST address to stay alive and minimize your hospital time from facing a blade in the streets. This is not a martial arts class it's an introduction to survival strategies when facing a blade in the hands of someone intent on harming you.

Interested? I hope so, here are the details:

Evening Lecture by Marc ‘Animal MacYoung on Friday 21st September (Time TBC provisionally 7pm to 8pm) is £5

2 day seminar with Marc ‘Animal’ MacYoung on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September (Times to be confirmed but both full days) is £100 if paid before Sunday 15th April on or £120 if booked after that date

One day seminar with Marc ‘Animal’ MacYoung on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd September is £50 if paid before Sunday 15th April on or £60 if booked after that date

I have had lots of interest already and booking forms going out before this information, and this unique will sell out quickly, so if you want I will send you a booking form straight away so you can get it straight back with payment to reserve your place, its first come first served, with priority given to 2 day bookings.

7 - Louis Thompson Power Strike Seminar in September

Message from Lewis Thompson:

Increase Your Power or Your Money Back

As martial artists and people who want to defend themselves from violence one of the biggest assets we can have is raw power. The problem with that is, it can be a long hard road to gaining that power and climbing to a level where your abilities can serve you. Here's the good news...

All of Your Perceptions About Gaining Power Are About to Change

I have spent the last 15 years under my mentor (and father) Geoff Thompson, honing my craft and learning to gain disproportionate amounts of power using revolutionary new techniques. I have tweaked and changed even the most minute details in order to produce phenomenal power through one technique.

I am so confident that my methods will increase your power in one session that if they don't I will give you your money back.

http://www.thompsonsd.com/shop/training.html

A Strike To Rival The Most Experienced Martial Artists

Using a combination of my unique immersion method, the experience of the Geoff Thompson 100,000 technique challenge and revolutionary restriction training I will take you step by step through the process of creating your very own Power Strike that will rival even the most experienced martial artists.

No matter what your ability as a martial artist there is something to be gained from this course. If you want to effectively defend yourself or just increase your striking power this is the course for you.

This is Exactly What I Need...How Do I Attend?

The course will be held at my self defence studio in Coventry on the 8th September 2012 from 10am until 2pm and places will be limited so don't hesitate as the places will go fast.

The usually cost of the course is £85 but, if you book before 31st March 2012 you will only have to pay £65.

As part of the course you will receive a free gift worth 24 pounds plus a certificate of completion.

9 - Rory Miller to visit the UK

Message from Mick Franklin:

Hi Everyone,

I wish to bring Sgt Rory Miller, author of Meditations On Violence and Facing Violence, over to the UK in June. Rory Miller works in the American Prison Service, his website is: http://chirontraining.com/Site/Home.html

Right now I need to see how much interest there is among the martial arts community before I go ahead and set all this up.

The courses Rory Miller will run will include the 'soft' courses of De-escalation, Violence Prevention and Violence Dynamics, as well as contact courses such as Introduction To Violence (includes: the 7 aspects of Violence, force law, efficient movement, fighting to the goal, counter ambush, infighting, environmental fighting and more) as well as Logic of Violence (scenarios designed for disaster management in violence). In addition if there is enough interest we will run a very intensive and physical 3 day course of scenario and weapon training.

The courses will range from approximately £50-£100 for a day course.

If you interested please register your interest with me (mick.franklin@hotmail.com) and I will keep you updated. Or if you have any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to help.
