New Podcast: Gichin Funakoshi's "6 Rules" of Karate

Hello everyone!

Funakoshi'ws 6 Rule PodcastWelcome to the latest iainabernethy.com newsletter! The main piece of news is a new podcast on Gichin Funakoshi’s “Six Rules” has just been added to the website! It’s a 45 minute discussion on the rules that Funakoshi said were, “absolutely essential for anyone who desires to understand the nature of karate.” If you see Section One you can find the link to where you can listen to and download the podcast (also available via itunes – just search “Iain Abernethy” under podcasts).

The other key bit of news is that the World Combat Association will be ready to go live very soon! The chances are that if you are reading this you will be a pragmatically biased martial artist and therefore the WCA is almost sure to be of interest. The aim is to solidify a global network of practical martial artists and to provide the freedom, recognition and support most organisations fail to give. Peter Consterdine 9th dan and I are just finalising a few details and then I’ll be sure to forward all the information. Please hold all questions until then. All will be answered soon!

The final thing to say in this introduction is that my email situation now sadly untenable. For many years I’ve worked long hours to ensure everyone who emails me gets a response. However, things have now reached the point where I could spend all day, every day answering emails and still not be able to reply to everyone such is the volume I’m receiving. I also need to focus my efforts on what brings the most benefit to the most people (i.e. the website, the podcasts, the videos, these newsletters, etc) and providing personal “technical support” via email is no longer tenable. I’ll obviously still answer all emails relating to the website, orders, seminars, etc, and I’ll do my best with the technical questions. However, please be aware that if I don’t reply to a technical question it’s not that you are being ignored it’s just that there are only so many hours in the day and yours will be one of a massive amount of emails I will have got that day. I do hope everyone will understand.

Anyhow, that’s enough from this introduction! I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with another newsletter very soon. In the meantime please keep in touch via the website, facebook and twitter.

Speak soon!

All the best,

Iain

1 - Gichin Funakoshi's Six Rules of Karate (NEW PODCAST)

Funakoshi'ws 6 Rule PodcastWelcome to the latest iainabernethy.com podcast! In this podcast I give my thoughts on Gichin Funakoshi’s “Six Rules” (of which there are five!). These rules form part of Funakoshi’s book ‘Karate-Do: My Way of Life’ and about which he states, “The strict observance of these rules is absolutely essential for anyone who desires to understand the nature of karate.” This podcast is obviously not attempting to be a definitive explanation or exploration of these rules, but merely my own take on them.

Funakoshi expands and briefly explains all these rules so the podcast also looks at those explanations. Funakoshi’s explanations of his rules raise many points of discussion and are every bit as important to explore as the rules themselves.

Overall, I think these rules are very useful for today’s karateka (and martial artists generally). However, I do find some parts of Funakoshi’s rules “uncomfortable” particularly with regards to his presentation of karate as a “faith”. In the podcast I explain my concerns about this part of Funakoshi’s thinking and why I disagree. The rules also lead me to touch on the subjects of humility, mental attitude, kata, combative principles, the relationship between ‘jutsu’ and ‘do’ and more. The “six” rules are as follows:

1 – You must be deadly serious in training.
2 – Train with heart and soul without worrying about theory.
3 – Although Funakoshi talks of “six rules”, number 3 is missing from the text.
4 – Avoid self-conceit and dogmatism.
5 – Try to see yourself as you truly are and try to adopt what is worthy of merit in the works of others.
6 – Abide by the rules of ethics in your daily life, whether in public or private.

This podcast was entirely unscripted and comes in at just over 45 minutes long. It is my hope that openly and freely sharing my thoughts in this way will prove useful to listeners as they explore the meanings and ramifications of these rules from themselves.

The podcast also has news on the new international group I’m involved with that hopes to provide a home and solid network for practically minded martial artists like us.

I hope you enjoy the podcast and I’ll be back with more very soon!

4 - Pocket One Punch Knockout iphone ap!

Message from Peter Consterdine:

I just wanted to let everyone know that I was finally coerced into an ‘App’ together, which is titled “Pocket One Punch Knockout” It’s available as a download from Apple iTunes on the iPhone and iPad.

This app is a detailed explanation of the ‘Double-Hip’ system for developing that one-shot, knockout strike, but it also goes into the dynamics of ‘Powerstrike’ combinations, demonstrating how transitions between power punching and kicking is achieved.

This film was made with Ricky Manetta, one of the BCA’s Senior Instructors and a Head Co-ordinator for the UFC.

It’s difficult recommending my own app, but it has tremendous instructional value if you really want to know how to put an opponent down with one hit.

This system works in the street and in full-contact competitions, so there is something for the competitive and practical martial artist.

Peter Consterdine

5 - Rory Miller to visit the UK

Message from Mick Franklin:

Hi Everyone,

I wish to bring Sgt Rory Miller, author of Meditations On Violence and Facing Violence, over to the UK in June. Rory Miller works in the American Prison Service, his website is:http://chirontraining.com/Site/Home.html

Right now I need to see how much interest there is among the martial arts community before I go ahead and set all this up.

The courses Rory Miller will run will include the 'soft' courses of De-escalation, Violence Prevention and Violence Dynamics, as well as contact courses such as Introduction To Violence (includes: the 7 aspects of Violence, force law, efficient movement, fighting to the goal, counter ambush, infighting, environmental fighting and more) as well as Logic of Violence (scenarios designed for disaster management in violence). In addition if there is enough interest we will run a very intensive and physical 3 day course of scenario and weapon training.

The courses will range from approximately £50-£100 for a day course.

If you interested please register your interest with me (mick.franklin@hotmail.com) and I will keep you updated. Or if you have any questions please let me know and I'll do my best to help.

Thank you for your time,

Mick

6 - One Thing at a Time by Nick Englen

One thing at a time.

It was in the middle of the winter, outside everything was covered with snow and with the slippery roads driving to the dojo was an adventure on its own. When arriving at the parking lot of the venue I saw only six cars. I wondered if any more people would turn up that night.

Even inside the dojo it was freezing cold. After everyone was prepared and waiting for a couple of minutes to see if there were more people going to come training started. Apart from Sensei we were with six.

After a warm-up and some stretching we lined up at the side of the mat.

‘As we are with a small group we have lots of space we can use so we can do some stuff we can’t when the dojo is full.’ Sensei told us. ‘Today we will have a look at how to deal with multiple opponents.’

‘Rob you will defend, Joe and Tom attack Rob. I want the two of you to really go for Rob with for now just punches. Glove up and put some headgear on.’

After gearing up Rob squared off with Joe and Tom. ‘Go’ Sensei said. Joe threw the first shot which Rob parried and followed up with a counterpunch. This missed its effect as Rob tried to combine it with a swing at Tom which missed completely. Another more committed punch thrown by Rob at Tom missed again and simultaneously threw Rob slightly off balance, opening him up for attacks by Tom and Joe. Rob covered up and moved backward trying to escape the attacks from his opponents while throwing out half-hearted punches at both assailants to attempt to keep them at bay..

‘Ok Time’ sensei shouted indicating the drill ended. ‘Rob take a brake, a fresh attacker and a new victim.’

John stood up and walked to the centre of the mat while Joe volunteered to be defender. A similar scenario as the one with Rob unfolded.

Now it was John’s turn, John was a black belt and one of sensei’s most experienced students. At the moment the start signal was given John leaped towards Tom catching him by surprise with a left jab that caught him right on the chin. A follow up with a barrage of punches blasted Tom several meters backwards. Tom unable to cope with the speed and tempo of the attack lost his footing and went flat on his ass. John turned around towards Marc who was shocked and not sure about how to handle the situation. By the time he had recovered John already had closed the gap throwing a right cross which Marc avoided by moving backwards. When Marc threw a jab cross combination in return, John covered up his head and drove forward, driving his elbows into Marc, pushing him back. This was followed up again by wing chun-like chain punches accompanied by a forward drive blasting Marc off the mat.

‘Time’ Sensei shouted. ‘Well done John….’

John nodded.

‘Ok everybody take a seat’ Sensei said while walking to the centre of the mat, ‘I intended to show this but John discovered it by himself. The only way to fight multiple opponents is to fight one opponent multiple times. The first two bouts showed that it’s hard to divide your attention and energy over two opponents causing us to take half measures and in the end spend even more energy and time.

This also counts for daily life, there is a word multitasking but in fact when we do multiple things at the same time we will spend even more time as we make mistakes and have to correct those. If you try to read three books simultaneously you have to spread your available time over three books. This means that it takes about three times longer to finish every single book. If you try to learn more than one discipline at once it’s just the same.

So do one thing at the time, give it your full 100% attention and then move on to the next. Now go and practise this amongst yourself, here on the mat and in daily life.’

15 - Act for Happiness by Trevor Russell

Message from Trev Russell:

There is a new website which I would urge anyone interested in self development/self improvement to have a look at called www.actforhappiness.co.uk

The article that the website is promoting was written by me following 10 years working on an Accident and Emergency Paramedic Ambulance. The intense experiences I went through during that time had a powerful effect on my mindset and completely changed my attitudes to life in a much more empowering way.

I would like to share how I developed over those 10 years with others in the belief that if you follow the 5 step plan set out in the article you too could dramatically improve your life and raise your levels of contentment.

To have the article sent to you costs just £3.99 payable via the paypal link on the site. (Half that fee goes to a charity for terminally ill children called Dreams Come True)

British Combat Karate AssociationPlease follow the link below for information on Peter Consterdine’s & Geoff Thompson’s British Combat Karate Association. The information pack and application form have also been uploaded to my website and they can be downloaded from the following page:

The BCA (British Combat Association) has undoubtedly had a bigger impact on UK martial arts than any other body and I’m really excited about the positive effects I see the British Combat Karate Association having. I strongly feel the British karate scene needs an organisation like this and I’m sure it will be of interest to many of you.

Please check out the downloads and the information below and if you have any questions Peter will be only to happy to answer them. He can be reached at peter@peterconsterdine.com or by phone on 01924266016 or 07831576509. You can also write to the BCKA at BCKA, 12b Wellgate, Ossett, Wakefield, WF5 8NS.
