1 - The Biggest Secret in the Martial Arts? (New Podcast)

The Biggest Secret in the Martial Arts? It’s officially our 30th podcast! I say “officially” because we’ve done things like double-podcasts and workout podcasts in the past. Regardless, I’m classing this as our 30th podcast … and it’s my website so no one can stop me! Thanks to you all for your support of the podcasts. The amount of downloads is fantastic (and pushing our bandwidth limits!). I’m truly delighted that so many of you are finding these podcasts useful.

This month I want to discuss what many seem to regard as the biggest secret in the martial arts! While there is no doubt that many martial artists are aware of this secret, there are very few who will publicly discuss it. Indeed, most will totally deny this highly influential secret and seem to regard it, and the influence it has, with great distain.

Want to know what the secret is? Well I can pretty much guarantee it has a big impact on how you train. It certainly does with me. The picture that goes with this podcast (assuming you are viewing this on the blog of iainabernethy.com and not on i-tunes or elsewhere) also gives you a clue. It’s myself and Dave Hazard at the recent British Combat Association residential course. Dave’s superb session certainly involved this rarely discussed “secret” aspect of the martial arts in large quantities. Still not sure what this secret is? Then I suggest you listen to the podcast!

I hope you enjoy this podcast and I’ll be back with our 31st podcast in a few weeks!

2 – Extreme Impact Sample Drills (New online video)

Extreme Impact (Iain and Steve)Thanks to everyone for their support of the new Extreme Impact downloads! They have got off to a great start and I’m delighted people are enjoying the direct, to the point, “high energy” presentation and editing. The aim was to get as much as we could into the running time with no filler and no unnecessary explanations so that the visuals match the methods of training. I’m really pleased this is striking a chord with people and Steve and I have plans to produce more units in the summer. This kind of training forms a big part of my own teaching and training and I feel it is totally necessary to ensure my students become rounded martial artists who are capable of generating great impact regardless of distance or environment.

Each download starts with some technical tips before moving into a number of drills and variations to develop all aspects of the technique in question and the required physical fitness and mental attributes to make the technique work when under stress. If you follow the link below and then click on the “play now” link at the bottom of the post, you can watch a low-resolution sample of three random drills taken from Extreme Impact units 2, 3 and 5. If you like what you see, please visit the shopping side of the main website for more details.

Please follow the link to be taken to the page where you can view the video: http://blog.iainabernethy.com/?p=415

Extreme Impact: 5 for the price of 4 offer extended!

Thanks to everyone for their support of the new Extreme Impact downloads! As most will know, we were running a special offer were people could get all 5 units for just £38.80. The offer was due to end on the 14th of Feb, but we got a few emails saying people wanted more time as not everyone had had the free time needed in front of the computer to purchase and then download the units. Steve and I have therefore extended the offer for a little while longer. If you go onto the webpage below and purchase all 5 downloads, the website will then automatically apply a discount so you only pay for 4:

3 - Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot 2010 Weekend Seminar!

Iain Abernethy & Mike LiptrotOn the 1st and 2nd of May Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot will be teaching a not-to-be-missed two day martial arts seminar! This is the fourth annual seminar Iain and Mike have done together. These events have been extremely popular and we expect this year's event to fill up very quickly. Once again, this event will take place in the highly impressive Kendal Judo Club Dojo - a recognised Olympic facility - which is in the heart of the Lake District national park.

This seminar is open to all martial artists - regardless of background, style, and current level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by Iain & Mike - will be issued to all participants.

This not-to-be-missed training opportunity will see Iain and Mike covering the following topics:

·         A detailed breakdown of bunkai for Passai / Bassai-Dai (including the associated two man and live drills). By the end of the weekend, participants will leave with a detailed understanding of the wide-ranging applications of this important form. The weekend format will allow Iain to go into greater depth than is possible in books, DVDs or standard seminars. If you want to learn in detail the close range combative methods of this form – including strikes, gripping, locks, cranks, takedowns, etc - this is the ideal seminar to attend.

·         The core footwork and movement skills needed for effective throwing. Leading grappling coach Mike Liptrot will teach a series of solo and partner drills that will develop the footwork and movement skills needed to set up and execute throws.

·         Iain will be teaching a series of pad-work drills to develop fast flowing transitions and power on the move. Being able to hit fast and hard is a vital requirement of effective martial arts, and yet the subjects of power generation and effective transitions between techniques are rarely addressed in much of modern training. Steve Williams – a regular training partner of Iain’s and the co-presenter of the Extreme Impact series – will be assisting Iain in this section!

·         Mike will be covering the fundamentals of effective groundwork that will give those new to groundwork a solid start to their study. Those with more familiarity with groundwork will also have the opportunity to further develop their pinning, locking and choking skills through more advanced sessions with Mike.

·         Iain and Mike will also be teaching joint sessions on how striking and grappling can be integrated together. This will include when to exploit the throwing opportunities that striking can present, throws as counters to strikes, strikes as counters to throws, effective striking following throws, etc. Aside from the discussing how these two combative methodologies can be integrated, these joint sessions are also certain to include a great deal of “good natured banter” and Iain and Mike try to convince you of the superiority of their chosen methodologies! Not to mention a plethora of “Fat Lad” jokes at Iain’s expense!

·         There will also be short lectures in the centres high-tech lecture facilities, plenty of opportunity to have your martial questions answered, and the opportunity to attend an informal social gathering and meal on the Saturday evening!

People may attend the whole weekend or just one of the days. A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by Iain & Mike - will be issued to all participants cover the time in attendance.

5 - “Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar!

Breaking News: Steve Williams will be assisting and teaching alongside Iain at this seminar! This is therefore great opportunity to learn how to increase your striking power and how to make "Extreme Impact" a part of your training and teaching!

I am pleased to invite you to “Reality Check 2010” – Striking & Grappling seminar day on Sunday 28th February 2010 at Bristol Dojo. 11am-5pm

Combat does not adhere to any given style or martial discipline, whilst techniques may look very different on the surface; they often share the same core principles. Whether you’re standing and striking or grappling on the ground the same principles can be used, the only thing that changes is how they are applied.

“Reality Check” brings two of the most sought after UK seminar instructors together for the first time on one course covering the complete combat subject of Stand-up and Ground fighting principles:-

Iain Abernethy – 5th Dan Karate Jutsu. One of the UK’s leading exponents of applied combat, Iain has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the practical application of traditional martial arts and is well known for his work on the pragmatic use of the techniques and concepts. At Reality Check Iain will be covering striking principles from the standing position. www.iainabernethy.com

Kevin O’Hagan – 7th Dan Combat Jujutsu. Kevin has taught successfully on the UK seminar circuit for many years and is held in high regard for not only his dynamic techniques and high level of fitness, but also for his down to earth realistic teaching. Kevin has written 5 books to date on Martial Arts. He has appeared on radio and TV promoting his art and as a Self Defence Specialist and he has written for fighters magazine regularly for 8 years. His TV credits include "Muscle" a documentary following a team of Bristol Door Security shown on BBC1 and most recently he appeared on a Sky 1 TV show "Britain’s Hardest." Kevin will be teaching principles relating to ground fighting. www.kevinohagan.com

The seminar will take combat principles and show how they can be applied from a standing position with Iain and then how they can be applied on the ground with Kevin including all the throws, locks, chokes and strangles you would expect from these two gentlemen. This is an open seminar and anyone who trains in any martial art is welcome.

Whether you train Karate, Jujutsu, MMA, Thai Boxing, Tae Kwon Do or Judo, this course will help you learn common combat principles to help you develop in your chosen system. No formal training wear is required, wear what’s comfortable for you!

The cost of this full 6 hour seminar is just £30 per person and the remaining places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. To book your place please send payment made out to Bristol Dojo Ltd, to 14 Marjoram Way, Village Quarter. Portishead. BS20 7JF. Details on the venue can be found here www.bristoldojo.com

13 - The Four Stages of Kata (German Translation)!

Here is a German Language version of my article "The Four Stages of Kata Training". Thanks to Axel Siebert and his colleagues for doing this.

Iain

16 - Kata: A Hierarchy of Benefits (Help Wanted)

For a little while now we have been looking at the hierarchy of the benefits of kata on the forum. The first stage was for people to submit what they felt were the key benefits.

Following on from the first part of this process we have posted a poll to enable us to rate the various benefits kata can bring. The poll also asks us to define “kata” and how effectively we feel kata realises these benefits. These additional brief two questions may help put the actual “hierarchy of benefits” in context. The questions asked are therefore as follows:

1 - What is “kata” to you?

2 - Which of the following (maximum of 5) do you feel are the key benefits of kata?

3 - Overall, how effectively do you feel kata realises those benefits?

To get meaningful data, it is important that as many people vote as possible. I would therefore really appreciate it if as many of you as possible could pop along to the forum and share your thoughts:

21 - Like a Japanese Gift Box: New Article by Nick Engelen

We all sat lined up at the edge of the tatami, trying to sit as comfortable as possible on the hard surface. As I watched the spectacle in front of my eyes I tried to regain my breath after my own performance.

One after the other we were being sent up front to perform the 45-count misogi-no-ken sword work in front of the group.

It was Robert’s turn, he had just received his 1st kyu. Proudly he took his place upfront, did the salute ritual in front of the kamiza and started his performance. His posture was good and the movements looked perfect and full of grace but something seemed missing. After he finished we applauded him while he closed off with a ritual before returning to the line up.

Next came Stuart, a 2nd Dan. When he started it was as if he changed into another person, his posture changed, his face showed intent while his kiai echoed through the training hall and his wooden sword sang as it cut through the air. It was as if he was fighting against 4 invisible adversaries.

When he finished everyone seemed still under the spell of his performance, which broke when Tina started to clap and we all started to applaud Stuart.

Sensei got up and said: that was it for today. ‘Any comments on what those gentlemen have shown?’

‘There was a noticeable difference between Robert’s and Stuart’s performance’ Marc said.

Sensei nodded and said: ‘What was that difference Marc?’

Marc said: ‘I don’t know exactly, Stuart gave more kiai.’

Yes and what else?

Marc shrugged.

‘I have a nice metaphor for this sensei said.’ He walked over to his bag and took out two boxes where after he returned to the centre of the tatami. He put both boxes in front of him. One was a beautifully crafted Japanese gift box. The other was a cardboard box of similar size.

‘Which one would you choose?’ he asked Marc.

Marc said: ‘The Japanese box looks good. I have no idea what’s in it though.’

‘Ok’ sensei said and he opened the box. It turned out to be empty.

Thereafter Sensei took the cardboard box and opened it. In it was an antique Japanese calligraphy.

‘Look Marc choose the Japanese box for its appearance but it’s empty likewise Robert’s performance looked beautiful but lacked something. It lacked intent. Stuart’s performance looked a little scruffy at times but he showed good intent and gave good kiai. Also in normal training many of you show good technique but there is no content to it. The content is the intent. Proper intent is more important than proper technique or like O-sensei put it: ‘When your heart is true the technique will be true.’’

Fear expert Tony Somers will be holding a workshop on How to Maximise your Potential by exploring Fear on April 17th at the Novo hotel in Coventry. There are only 15 places available so to book your place on this not to be missed event go to www.tonysomers.com

Includes a free copy of the inspirational EMBRACE YOUR FEARS DVD (normally £19.99)

Learn how to Free your FULL potential by understanding your FEARS

You probably already have an understanding of how fear can negatively impact on your life, not only at home but also in the work place. Fear can manifest as:

Fear of criticism
Fear of failure
Fear of looking stupid in front of others
Fear of success

Fear can dominate the lives of many people causing them to under perform and suffer stress and anxiety, which if kept inside will eventually lead to stress related illness and poor relationships at work and at home and in life in general.

There is a simple solution though…. Let me explain

Tony Somers is a highly acclaimed fear expert and hosts a workshop aimed at helping you to face your fears and pass through them as if they had never existed. During this dynamic and uniquely exciting workshop you will learn the skills and tools to maximise your potential, to give you greater choices in life and embrace the future with confidence and certainty in all that you do.

During the workshop you will discover how to:

Lead a more balanced and meaningful life
Achieve greater levels of performance
Make success a way of life
Improve your personal health
Increase your motivation, self confidence and your self esteem
And much more

Fear is a topic that is rarely talked about let alone faced and yet it affects every aspect of our lives. This workshop will enable you to talk about and deal effectively with the subject of “FEAR” with confidence, excitement and a willingness to live your life to the full.

“Tony has a passion and knowledge for the subject of self confidence through taking on your fears that is unrivalled. A trainer coach and facilitator who makes you feel totally at ease no matter what the subject and there fore always ensuring that you get the most from his workshops. I would thoroughly recommend Tony as your first point of contact when addressing the subject of self confidence and addressing your fears.” - Mark Higgins, Head of People Development, Chelsea Building Society, November 2008

“Through their sensitive approach, Tony and Glenn created an atmosphere and environment of safety which allowed people to talk openly about their experience of fear. They encouraged a climate of openness, trust and honesty by disclosing how their personal fears had affected them in their lives, and how they now face up to fear. A great realisation for all was how we big up our fears so that they become out of proportion to reality. This then increases our anxiety levels and immobilizes us. Tony and Glenn’s session helped to give some perspective on how we can feel the fear, take steps to break through the fear barrier, and come out the other side having grown and developed as a person.” - Gary Cook, Learning and Development Consultant
