1 – New Podcast: Solo Kata for Solo Training
This
month we cover Solo Kata for Solo Training! In these podcasts we
frequently discuss how kata records the combative techniques and concepts upon
which karate is based. Kata provides the combative syllabus around which we
should structure all of our training. Kata should be central to our pad drills,
partner-work, sparring, and all other forms of training. In this podcast we
discuss the solo kata itself and how it can be used as an enjoyable and
effective method of supplementary solo training.
We start by discussing the nature of kata, what a “good kata” is, and what benefits the practise of solo kata can bring when training alone. We then spend the bulk of the podcast looking at the many different ways in which you can make use of kata regardless of style, available space or environment. We also cover some of the ways in which you can add variety to solo kata training in order to make training challenging and enjoyable. The hope is the podcast will motivate and inspire you to further explore the many ways in which kata can be used when a training partner is not available.
In the second part of the podcast we cover listener’s questions. Topics covered include warm-ups, the martial arts and weight loss, worries about the law when we defend ourselves, whether competitive karate is harmful or beneficial, and making use of what I teach in your own practise.
It’s just over an hour of my martial musings and I hope you enjoy it and find it interesting. Enjoy!

2 – Extreme Impact New Online Bag Work Videos
Please
find below two new Extreme Impact bag-work drills! These drills were filmed by
me especially for our Youtube channel. They were uploaded earlier in the week.
Steve and I hope you enjoy them:
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/news/extreme-impact-online-bag-drills-steve-williams
In the first video Steve Williams shows a drill making use of slaps, punches and elbows from a relaxed natural posture. The aim being to develop big impact through the correct use of the hips and to seamlessly adapt to the distance of the enemy.
In the second video Steve shows a drill making use of high and low roundhouse kicks and straight punches. This one is physically more demanding and develops anaerobic endurance, impact, fighting spirit, the ability to judge distance and pick your shot.
I hope the drills are of interest and if you want more drills, with plenty of technical breakdown, then please checkout the Extreme Impact Downloads:

All the best,
Iain
3 – Beyond Bunkai Online Video
Please
find below a link to a trailer for ‘Beyond Bunkai: A Holistic Naihanchi / Tekki
Shodan Close-Range Flow Drill’. The trailer is a selection of random clips from
the DVD / download which should give you the basic flavor of it.
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/beyond-bunkai-trailer
Beyond Bunkai contains a series of combative “elements” relating to every motion within Naihanchi / Tekki Shodan. As the practitioner progresses, more of these elements can be added into practise.
The drill begins from a position where the chance to pre-empt and escape as been lost. Tori then uses the opening motions of the kata to regain the initiative and dominate using other methods from the kata.
Uke is free to attempt to stop Tori’s techniques at any point. However, Tori will use the appropriate method from the kata to flow around that attempt and remain dominant until it is appropriate to escape.
This kind of semi-live drilling not only teaches the practitioner “what” the kata motions do, it also teaches the vitally important “when” to do them. It develops the right actions at the right time. This drill also develops the right combative mind set, has the right combative feel, and allows the practitioner to utilise bunkai for the entire kata in a free flowing way.
This site’s video player has a 50M limit. In order to get the full length clip I had to drop the quality a little. Although the resulting video is “less than crystal clear”, you can still get a flavor of what the actual program includes and covers.
I hope the clip is of interest and I’ve copied a review by Michael Rosenbaum below.
Review of Iain Abernethy’s Beyond Bunkai DVD
By Michael Rosenbaum
The Naihanchi/Tekki series are undoubtedly some of the most widely practiced kata in modern karate. Numerous versions abound, most tracing their lineage to the Shuri or Tomari styles of fighting. Despite their popularity, these kata are often deemed beginners’ forms and their combative value is paid scant attention. Such misconceptions have long plagued the Nahanchi/Tekki kata series but are now dispelled by Iain Abernethy in his latest instructional DVD, Beyond Bunkai: Advanced Non-Scripted Naihanchi/Tekki Shodan Close-Range Flow Drill.
Abernethy, a leading Bunkai authority, firmly establishes the Naihanchi/Tekki series as a highly effective style of fighting by breaking the kata down into easy to learn, informative segments. He then demonstrates each segment’s function in combat; even the kata’s footwork is used for fighting. Both technique and concept are demonstrated in these segments as is the natural awkwardness of close range fighting.
Throughout the DVD Abernethy emphasizes the fact that there are no magic formulas, one touch knock-outs, or easy to apply submission holds for close-range fighting. Hammersmashes, head-butts, biting, elbowing, groin-grabs, stomps and neck-cranks are the mainstay of Abernethy’s arsenal as he stresses the importance of using aggression to conquer one’s enemy instead of aesthetically appealing techniques. Indeed, many of the techniques used would be more appropriate for the pub brawl or back alley fist fight than the dojo, something which may prove disconcerting for staunch traditionalists. For those seeking practical skills though it will be greatly appreciated.
At the beginning of the DVD Abernethy draws a parallel between the alphabet and kata then goes on to explain that just as words are constructed by using letters randomly, so should a katas’ techniques be practiced for fighting. This non-linear approach, which enables the karate-ka to mix and match techniques found within the kata, breaks with many traditional beliefs yet allows the exploration of strategies previously unobtainable. Similarly it is a concept applicable to not just the Naihanchi/Tekki, but all karate kata
The DVD is professionally directed, the backdrop and cinematography make for easy viewing and its cost is within a reasonable limit, even with overseas postage included. Overall, Abernethy’s Beyond Bunkai: Advanced Non-Scripted Naihanchi/Tekki Shodan Close-Range Flow Drill is a worthy addition to any serious karate-ka’s library.
About the reviewer: Michael Rosenbaum has been training in karate since 1976. He is the author of Kata and the Transmission of Knowledge in Traditional Martial Arts.

4 – Kudo: The Future of Competitive Karate? (Videos + UK Course)
If
you follow the link below you can find some of my thoughts on the Kudo
competitive format and some related videos to show those who don’t know what it
is all about:
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/future-format-competitive-karate-some-thoughts-and-videos
Essentially Kudo is a karate / judo mix, but I feel the type of competitive format they use has much more to offer the traditional karateka than the standard format of competitive karate does. While it can be argued that there is no need for any form of karate competition, if we are to have one I think it should not run contrary to karate itself.
Modern competitive karate has moved a long way from the combative art of karate that spawned it. Indeed, if it were not for the shared name you could make a good case for them being entirely separate and unrelated disciplines. The Kudo competitive format is closer to the traditional art (still different, but a lot closer).
Peter Consterdine 9th dan saw the clips too and had the following to say:
“I’VE SEEN THE LIGHT! For years I’ve put my not inconsiderable brainpower(!!!!) into thinking about what would be the finest ‘Full Contact’ competition – and never came up with it. That is until Iain Abernethy sent me a video link to look at and it was the Kudo World Championships and this was my ‘light bulb’ moment. So much so that I’ve spent a large part of the past week going over as much footage as I can to analyze the elements of Kudo competition and I now ‘get it.’ It is simply fantastic.”
Peter is now in the process of organizing a course on the 15th of May on with UK Kudo representative Lee Hasdell. I’ll be there and I’ll forward information as soon as things are finalised. In the meantime, follow the link, check out all the videos, and read my thoughts and the thoughts of others on this competitive format:

5 – Combat Coach Program with Iain Abernethy and Peter Consterdine
This
week I added all the details of the Combat Coach Program to the website. You can
find more details on the webpage below and download the prospectus from there
too:
http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/news/combat-coach-programme-iain-abernethy-and-peter-consterdine
The program is a mix of study materials, manuals, projects, and face to face instruction (although a distance learning option is available for those outside the UK). The course is ideal for those wanting to expand their knowledge beyond the narrow confines of the martial arts to the wider issues surrounding security and personal protection. The program is split into three levels (award, instructor and diploma) and guidance on which level is most suitable for you can be found in the prospectus; which can be downloaded from the webpage linked above.
This is a program that is you can do at your own pace and is organised around the individual. A list of all 55 units of competence can be found below. 6 – Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot Course 2011 (28th & 29th May)!
On
the weekend of the 28th & 29th of May Iain Abernethy & Mike Liptrot will be
teaching their yearly not-to-be-missed two day martial arts seminar! This is the
fifth annual seminar Iain and Mike have done together.
These events have been extremely popular and we expect this year's event to fill up very quickly. Once again, this event will take place in the highly impressive Kendal Judo Club Dojo - a recognised Olympic facility - which is in the heart of the Lake District national park.
This seminar is open to all martial artists - regardless of background, style, and current level of ability - who wish to develop competence in a wide range of martial skills. The training will be a combination of the physical and the theoretical (including short lectures and presentations). A certificate of attendance - signed and stamped by Iain & Mike - will be issued to all participants.
Please put the date in your dairy as booking and accommodation details will be coming very soon!
7 – Thoughts on Tradition & Innovation in the Martial Arts (Article by Forum Member ‘MikeT’)
Here is great article by forum regular “MikeT”. I hope you enjoy it and please remember that all members of the site can post their articles in the article section of the forum
Thoughts on Tradition & Innovation in the Martial Arts
I sometimes get tired of ‘traditional’ martial artists close-mindedly taking pot shots at any kind of ‘change’ in martial arts simply on the basis that something is ‘different’ or because it threatens established orthodoxies. You see this attitude in a lot of self-proclaimed “traditional” martial arts schools.
Likewise, I get JUST AS tired of self-proclaimed ‘visionaries’ and ’fighters’ bad-mouthing traditional martial arts as “ineffective”, “obsolete”, and what not. Especially with the current prevalency of sporting MMA, you see this attitude a lot in self-proclaimed “fight” or sport-oriented gyms where the emphasis is placed primarily on (rules-based) athletic fighting. ‘Who needs technique? We just get in the ring and bang, man.’
Holding either attitude too tightly will severely limit your training and ability to progress at a study of human interpersonal combatives. Like a lot of things, to be fully understood, the question of "tradition VS. innovation" needs to be reframed from its ‘either/or’ context to a ‘both/and’ context.
The fact is, if nothing ever changed, we would still be living without electricity, smart phones, combustion engines, the internet, Gortex, artificial hearts, shoes, clothing, packaged food, or whatever other human innovation you might be able to think of off the top of your head. These ‘developments’ occurred because someone first correctly identified a need and then had the subsequent 'nerve’ to question what was simply ‘accepted’ by most as ‘the way things are’. This quest to IMPROVE our condition is perhaps one of the most fundamental aspects of our species, and it is frequently hamstrung when the notion of 'tradition' is used to beat down critical thought.
Likewise, I have seen just as many people go the other direction, and claim that simply because something ‘came before’ or wasn’t somehow ‘personally invented’ it is AUTOMATICALLY inferior to anything that might be ‘original’ derived in nature. You see this a lot with ‘artistic’ personality types. To do so is to deny the logic of the idea that ‘nothing comes from nowhere’. We achieve as a species mostly BECAUSE we are able to stand on the shoulders of those who came before us …..

8 – Rhys Abernethy's "Help for Heroes" Thank You Video
My
7 year old son Rhys did his sixteen and a half mile walk for “Help for Heroes”
last Sunday! The essential background details are that after seeing a
documentary on TV, Rhys had set himself the goal of raising £1000 for injured
soldiers before he turned eight. He did a sponsored swim (over 70 lengths of the
pool) and entered the sea on New Year’s day (it was freezing!). He then decided
that he would walk from our home to his maternal grandparents’ home. The two
towns are fourteen miles apart, but from door to door we measured the distance
to be just over sixteen and a half miles; which is a long way for little legs!
Rhys asked me if I could ask my “karate friends” for their help so I put out a request for sponsorship via this website … the response was amazing! You were all so incredibly generous that Rhys not only met his target, he doubled it!
The latest total can be found here: http://www.bmycharity.com/rhysabernethy
I really appreciate the support of all those who donated, and all those who voiced their support. You made a young boy very happy, you helped teach him that working toward a goal can manifest results, and your money has gone to a very worthwhile cause. Thank you!
Rhys thought it would be a good idea to film bits of the walk so he could say thanks and so you could see what he did. Edited highlights are below! It was filmed using my mobile phone but I think it’s came out OK.
The beret Rhys is wearing was a gift from Michael Rosenbabum. It was one of Michael’s berets from his time in the US military and it has rarely been off Rhys’s head since he got it!
I feel I should also warn you that Rhys utters a mild swear word (s##t) during the clip! I was laughing at Rhys laughing and hence it never registered! To be fair, I’ve heard him say worse! However, I thought I should warn those of a sensitive nature that they may want to listen with the sound down ;-)
This is also a highly educational clip for all those who want to know what a “nasty pasty” is (it was news to me!) and how many zombies it would take to kill a vampire! Rhys explains all!
Also notice how having walked over sixteen miles and up a very steep hill to finish, the first thing he does is knock on the door and run away! That tells you everything you need to know about the boy right there!
I hope you enjoy the clip and thanks once again to everyone! We really appreciate it!
Rhys’s Thank You Video can be found here:

9 – The Return of the Martial Secrets Podcast (plus old episode with Iain)
Some
of you may be interested in this blast from the past! This was an interview Kris
Wilder did with me before I started my own podcast. It was done in 2005 and I
think it was the 1st time I talked to Kris “in person” too (now good friends).
Kris tells me the show is to be resurrected and put out weekly very soon!
Kris Interviews Iain on “the old” Martial Secrets: http://www.martial-secrets.com/2011/02/21/martial-secrets-with-guest-iain-abernethy/
And now news of the all new Martial Secrets!
Message form Kris Wilder:
Martial-Secrets, goes weekly and on iTunes
Years ago I did about 18 interviews in a podcast
format. I dropped the project when my server went out of business. Recently
Lawrence Kane and I have joined together, for The new and we think improved
Martial-Secrets.
A website, a link into iTunes, the full meal deal as McDonald’s used to say. So
we have posted the old 18 interviews for about 10 hours of listening. Shortly we
will follow with the new format and new topics which we hope you will enjoy.

10 – Karate Café reply to Iain on his Kobudo Comments
Hi All,
I hope you all find this interesting. In the “Occam’s Hurdled Kata” podcast I answered a listener’s question on Kobudo and it’s relevance to self-defence. The bit in question can be found at 48:00 in this podcast: http://www.iainabernethy.co.uk/content/occams-hurdled-katana-podcast
As a UK based martial artist I commented that Kobudo had no real relevance to self-defence for me and hence it was not part of my practise. My point was that it is illegal to use weapons in the UK and hence the specifics of using Sai, Nunchaku, Tonfa etc were an irrelevance to me and hence Kobudo would never be a permanent part of my practise.
Paul at the Karate Café podcast contacted me via twitter to say he felt I was off base with this and, after a little tweeting, Paul said he would do a “counterpoint podcast” and it can be found here: http://karatecafe.com/podcasts/minisode.12.mp3
I said I would spread the word on the podcast so people could listen to Paul’s reply. Hence this post!
It’s a very good listen and I suggest you all check it out to get the alternative take on things. I think Paul makes a very good case and there is little he says that I would disagree with. Having heard the podcast I think our views are maybe closer than first thought.
I feel that Paul’s point that Kobudo develops skills that are transferable to improvised weaponry is totally valid. My use of the phrase “they are not practical” in reference to Kobudo kata and modern self-protection was therefore inaccurate and I totally get why he chose to call me on it.
What would have been a better expression of my view was “they are not directly practical, but can have indirect benefits with regards to improvised weaponry”. I’m not sure if Paul would agree with that or not, but that is what I took to be his view from his podcast reply.
Even with the indirect benefits, classical Kobudo is not personally for me as I feel it suits me better to work directly with likely “improvised weapons” themselves. There are also specific skills associated with some of the classical weapons that take a lot of time to develop (i.e. flipping Sai, rotating Tonfa, redirecting Nunchanku, etc). I feel that, seeing as I’m never going to make use of those specifics, training time should be prioritised elsewhere ….

11 – Marc "Animal" MacYoung in UK in 2011
Hi All,
Here
is your chance to train with Marc MacYoung in September! I’ve been a fan of
Marc’s work for decades and it was great when I got to meet him in person last
year. He’s a great guy, with a superb teaching style, and his material is as
practical as it gets. This is not an opportunity to miss so be sure to contact
Mick and let him know you would support this event. Mick Franklin is the
organiser you can find all the details below. Be sure to contact him ASAP.
All the best,
Iain
(Left to Right: Nick Yang, Marc MacYoung, Rory Miller, Al Peasland, Iain Abernethy, Kris Wilder)
Message from Mick Franklin:
Greetings,
My name is Mick Franklin, I am a 2nd Dan in Kyokushin Karate but today I am
writing to you as a representative of Conflict Communications. I wish to make
you aware of our upcoming course on De-escalation. This 1 day course will
be conducted by internationally acclaimed Marc MacYoung, a man who has lived and
worked on the sharp end of life dealing with violent and aggressive people, but
more importantly was able to attain and master the skills to defuse
potentially violent situations, and then successfully pass those skills on to
martial artists, hospital and police staff all around the world.
This course really is one of a kind. Rather than just being an "aggression
management" course you will learn the source of all conflicts and more
importantly what to do about them. The skills you will learn are not just useful
for preventing violent attacks, but will also greatly benefit the way you
interact with people in all situations, including at work and in your personal
relationships. Your martial arts techniques may be superb but can you recognise
when someone really intends to hurt you? Can you defuse a violent individual? Do
you have the skills to explain to the police and courts what steps you took to
avoid it becoming physical, and explain, in a legal sense, why you did what you
had to do?
Course Dates: September the 3rd for De-escalation, September the 4th for the
Body Mechanics in Martial Arts course
Course Costs: £40 for 1 day only, or £70 for both days
Location: Edinburgh
Duration: 8 hours each day
If you would like some further insight in to Mr MacYoung's training you should
begin with his website, I think you will be impressed:
http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/
I have also included a brochure of the De-escalation Course for you below.
If this is something you would like to press ahead with, or if you just have
some questions, then let me know. I am taking note of interest now.
Kind regards,
Mick Franklin
P.S. Marc MacYoung will be running a course on Body Mechanics in Martial Arts on
the day after the De-escalation Course. This course will show you how to
generate more power from your techniques (regardless of your style) and to apply
a critical eye to why a technique works or doesn't work, as well as making
students aware of important elements that are currently missing from the way
bunkai and kata is taught in most schools. I can not say much about it now -keep
an eye on the magazine Martial Arts Illustrated for the first news on this
exciting material in an indepth interview with Mr MacYoung. I can honestly say,
however, that despite my 10 years of full contact Kyokushin Karate I have
learned a lot from Marc in a very short time about good technique and generating
power.

De-escalation Course
Marc MacYoung is a highly respected expert on conflict and violence. He is the
author of 15 books and 6 videos dealing with different aspects of de-escalation,
conflict resolution, self defense and use of force. He has conducted many
seminars for police, security, hospital staff and martial artists alike around
the world. He has lived and worked on the sharp end of life, including the mean
streets of Los Angeles, and working in security and correctional services.
The sharp end is not an exaggeration. Despite 100's of incidents involving
physical violence, he feels his greatest achievements are the 1,000s of
incidents that were peacefully resolved. He has been very successful at talking
down violent, sometimes psychotic, people. He honed his communication skills
because the options were 'de-escalate or bleed.' He knows first hand conflict
situations are emotional, stressful and scary. His proven ability as a 'Thug
Whisperer' isn’t magic. It is a learnable, teachable skill.
Teaming up with Rory Miller, a retired Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff and CERT leader, they developed Conflict Communications. During the development of the program for law enforcement, they realized insights and conflict strategies developed for de-escalating physically violent people also work with employees, managers, co-workers, spouses and teenagers. The had stumbled across the Rosetta Stone of conflict. Hence, Conflict Communication training is available in six different areas.
Law Enforcement Training
Correctional/Sworn Officers
Human Resources
Legal
Social Services/Schools
High Risk/Conflict Management
Why this course can help you:
*One, your safety. Knowing the 'check list' of pre-attack indicators, you can tell the difference between a loud and emotional -- but harmless -- threat display and when someone is preparing to attack. We also teach the importance of tactical positioning as an important component of de-escalation (without threatening someone you can still show them you are not safe to attack)
*Two, there are two kinds of bad use of force, excessive and unnecessary. Excessive is rare. Unnecessary is a legal nightmare you don't want to find yourself in. This training reduces these kinds of unnecessary incidents.
*Three, it indemnifies and protects you by teaching you to better articulate use of force incidents -- especially the build up to violence.
*Four, We are the only program that addresses how not to get caught in the emotional and primitive 'monkey dance' of conflict. One of our mottos is 'De-escalate yourself first.' If you can't do that, you are heading for an unnecessary use of force incident. You cannot be professional and let 'the monkey drive the bus.'
Before you can de-escalate someone else, you must de-escalate yourself.
We give you the means to do that.
Before you can apply other training you must have emotional control.
We'll show you how
Before you can find the 'best answer' for a situation, you have to know what's happening
We'll teach you the key points to look for in conflict
Before you can explain yourself in court, you have to know what happened
Well teach you how to articulate what you did to calmly resolve the situation and why you had to do what you did.
This program doesn't replace any previous training.
It makes it work better.
But more than all of that, this program is about improving communication and strategies to reduce and better deal with conflict. Other programs teach tactics. This program teaches WHY conflicts happen and how they manifest in different circumstances. We also teach about the irrational, emotional 'monkey brain agenda' issues that -- until they are addressed -- the conflict will NOT be resolved. These unresolved agendas which cause conflict will return. Whether the same fight over and over again or an argument over something completely different.
Basically it isn't that other programs don't work. The information is sound and technically correct. What people are lacking is this foundation to be able to apply those techniques out where they need them. We supply that. We don't replace any training, we just help people apply it out in the field.
This program is also useful in the workplace. Within many organisations there are serious problems between workers and departments. Politics, conflict, people not meeting professional standards, legal issues, troublesome behaviors and sometimes even physical violence ... the list is endless. And this list of problems costs more in time, money and waste than the correct training to deal with them effectively ever will.
That's where we can help. By teaching about the dynamics of conflict, monkey brain agendas and default emotional scripts, those issues that create ongoing conflicts and tensions within a group can be addressed and problems actually solved. When that happens productivity goes up, money is not only saved, but made and the likelihood of being sued goes way down.
Yes, this is a de-escalation program. Yes, it is a conflict management program. Yes, it is a conflict resolution program. It's all of that and more. What it really is is a bridge over the gap between training and application. It is what a person needs to know so they can take their previous training and actually apply it in a stressful, emotional and even dangerous situation.

– Two Great New books from Dan Anderson!
I’m currently reading two new books by Dan Anderson. The first is “Super Dan - A Martial Arts Memoir” which is Dan’s personal story. We sometimes forget that the martial arts do not exist without martial artists. It is martial artists who make the martial arts. Dan Anderson has been a hugely influential martial artist and hence the book is a great read about his own journey through karate, martial competition and Arnis. Anyone who as met Dan knows that he is an entertaining and engaging story teller and that talent exists every bit as much in print as it does in person. I’m really enjoying the book (and I even get included in some tales around page 185 ;-).
The second book is “Advanced Martial Arts: The Art of Body Management”. Having watched Dan teach numerous times, his ability to get to the heart of the issue is something that never fails to impress. This book gets to the core of many subjects including the physics of throwing, sweeps and takedowns, joint locking, trapping, locking with the cane, etc. A direct no-nonsense book that should be studied by all martial artists.
Both great reads!
Super Dan - A Martial Arts Memoir
"Super
Dan" is the memoirs of the first national karate champion to break out and
compete with his own eclectic American karate style. Beginning in the small town
of Vancouver, Washington, he tells his tale of starting out in karate all the
way through winning the world karate championships and becoming a Grand Master
in two major martial arts. "As most of you are aware, in 1980, Professor Dan
Anderson wrote the best book written to-date on point-sparring, "American
Freestyle Karate: A Guide to Sparring." Professor Anderson is now nearing
completion of his new book, a personal memoirs. I have had the opportunity to
read the final draft. Quite simply, I can state unequivocally that it is, in my
humble opinion, the best memoir ever written regarding sport karate. Moreover,
it is perhaps the best study of 1970s sport karate ever put to paper." Tom Levak
- USA National Karate Federation 17-time world Champion

Advanced Martial Arts - The Art of Body Management
When I began karate over 40 years ago i had already heard tales of the mystical martial arts masters who could do wondrous feats." Advanced Martial Arts takes you forward from you martial arts skills into the footsteps of the legendary masters. Chapter after chapter you will learn what made these grandmasters so great in their skills!

enjoyed my time in the USA last year and am keen to get back over and spend a
little more time swapping ideas and shooting the breeze with all the fiends I’ve
made via these newsletters and the website.
We’re looking at the feasibility of a three day event to cover the following:
The Historical Development and Background of Kata
The 4 Stage Approach to Kata
The Language of Kata
How to Analyse the Movements of Kata
The Nature of Live Conflict
How to Create Effective Bunkai Drills
Karate Grappling (including throws, locks, chokes, strangles and groundwork).
Bunkai-Based Flow Drills
Kata-Based-Sparring (live bunkai drills and how to make them appropriate for all
levels)
Kata Applications including The Pinan / Heian Series, Tekki / Naihanchi,
Kushanku / Kanku-Dai, Passai / Bassai-Dai
The aim is to ensure that all participants can take the elements of what I teach
which fit with their existing approach so they can add them to their training
and teaching.

You can also call Neil on 07835 802394.
The seminar will covers the main “blocks” used within most karate systems: Head
block, Knife hand block, Groin Block, Inside/Outside block. The main focus is to
show how these techniques can be used an offensive tool in relation to self
defence, rather than karate-ka vs karate-ka, either as a stand alone technique
or linked with other moves found within Pinan/Heian, Bassai Dai and Tekki Shodan
kata. We'll also look and the “stances” the blocks are performed in and how they
are related.
Neil’s Background: “I started karate in 1998 competing in regional and
national competitions under the EKKA. I received my Shodan under Mick Blackwell
in 2004, then my Nidan 2006. I spent a year studying martial arts in Biejing
covering Sanda, Wrestling and a little Thai Boxing. Obtained a Shodan in
kickboxing in 2008 once again under Mick Blackwell, with experience in semi
contact and full contact competitions. Studied Kuk Sool Won for three years,
worked on the doors for six months and most recently passed Iain Abernethy's
Instructor Award. I'm also really nice.”
What Iain says: “Neil is one of a very small number of people to complete
my instructor program. His knowledge of the practical application of kata is
first rate. Neil moves very well and that combined with his clear and friendly
teaching style means he is able to inspire and educate anyone with a sincere
interest in karate as a functional combative system.”

Learn in a small class the unique ‘Double Hip’ and it’s applications in both a
martial arts and street conflict situation.
With this 1 day class limited to just 20 people, there will be a substantial
opportunity to learn this dynamic impact development system, originally
developed by Sensei Shigeru Kimura of Shukokai Karate fame - my great
inspiration in respect of understanding and applying the most effective dynamics
to not only the development of impact, but movement, transitions between
techniques and speed.
The ‘foundation’ techniques were originally developed by Kimura with scientific
assistance from a Japanese university and included within the core Shukokai
Karate system.
Over the years, however, I have refined these core dynamics to be devastatingly
effective, not only in traditional Karate, but in a Full Contact/ MMA
environment and particularly for ‘Preemptive‘ striking in real life violent
encounters and as taught to numerous UK police forces, including Firearms/Close
Protection units. Punching, slaps, elbow, combinations and delivery at speed
will all be covered and more. You can fit these dynamics within your core
martial arts to give real effect.

26 - Ask Me About My Bruises T-Shirts
A
few weeks ago I told you about the “Ask me about my bruises” t-shirts and the
good that getting one would do a Ugandan gent by the name of Felex. I’ve had my
new version of the shirt for a few weeks now and I really love it! It looks
really good on, is very good quality and it helps me make new friends wherever I
go!
If you’ve not got one of these yet, do yourself (and Felex) a favour and follow
the link below:

Message from Eric Parsons
Hello Everyone,
While serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Uganda, I founded a martial arts group which Sarah (my wife) and I eventually incorporated into an anti-HIV/AIDS life skills training program. The top student in that group, Felex Forward, has continued to train in the martial arts and is also currently working as a primary school teacher in the country, under which capacity he is trying to continue the joint life skills/martial arts program. However, last month, Felex was told by the local government that they were going to demolish his house because the town had recently been promoted to a district capital and they wanted to "beautify" the neighbourhood. As such, he is in dire need of assistance.
To help out, we are selling our popular "Ask me about my bruises" shirts as a fundraiser. With the help of a talented artist, we've came up with a very cool design, but you don't need to take my word for it. Check it out for yourself! Shirts are $20 for US orders and $23 for international orders, postage included, and can be paid either via check or through Paypal. If you're interested in purchasing a shirt and helping Felex out, just contact me at askmeaboutmybruises@gmail.com
Thanks in advance!
Eric
27 - The Kissaki Method DVD Update
The Kissaki Method DVD, presented by 6th Dan Don Came, is pretty close to being finished now. Just some final polishes and it'll be available. It's around an hour of detailed instruction on key concepts used in the Kissaki-Kai program with accompanying flow drills to show them in action. These drills can be easily incorporated as is or adapted to any martial system, so they're ideal for instructors to add to lesson plans. They'll help you break down and analyse concepts from your own kata and forms, bringing these movements to life in a realistic way. Check out http://www.karateacademy.org.uk/ for details of Don's classes.
(Note: I'll be adding more details on this DVD to the website very soon. I have action stills and I also hope to have some preview footage. It looks awesome! - Iain)
That’s all folks! If you’ve any comments or suggestions relating to the website or these newsletters, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line: iain@iainabernethy.com
